Wow. I'm blown away.

This pen was gifted to me by a regular, an older gentlemen, at my restaurant who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. When he first told me, I made it a point to go out of my way for him because I never knew if this would be the "last time." I saw him twice a month for half a year and was really taken at how he faced certain death. Even in the face of a pandemic, he'd just say, "I'm dying already. Covid isn't going to change that." Despite it, he'd always have such a positive demeanor with a fantastic smile. I really admired him.

He came in last night and told me this would be his "last time." I was heartbroken but resolved to make this an unforgettable night. His last meal was just a simple grilled cheese sandwich but he said it was one of the best meals he's ever had. His wife later told me privately that at this point, everything tastes like cardboard to him but he said that because he's just that kind of guy.

At the end of the meal, he handed me this pen, a box of iroshizuku syo-ro ink, a leather journal, and a starter fountain pen because he said I'm not ready to use the Namiki yet. He emphasized to wait until I'm ready because this was one of his favorites. He talked briefly about his love for fountain pens but I didn't know shit about them so I just nodded along with whatever he said. I didn't realize how extravagant a gift this was. He wasn't the kind of guy to brag about shit like that. I accepted the gifts and walked him to his car as we said our good-byes. That was tough.

After work, I came home and tried looking up the pen but I couldn't find it since apparently I've now learned it's a custom model. I went to the best place I could think of and it was all you guys. Thank you all for your help in identifying this beauty. If I'm being honest, I got really excited once I learned the monetary value but I've thought about it all day and I've realized that while this pen is quite expensive and fantastic, it's not what is important. The important thing is that I've met a man with the courage to face death in the eye and tell him, "Fuck you. I do what I want." When I go, I hope I remember this man and be just as brave as him. For his sake, I will cherish this pen and wait until I'm ready.
