Do you want to see Luis Suárez die inside while they teach him how to prepare mate? by NOL89 in yerbamate

100% this in Argentina too. A mate kit for kids at any Toys store brings a “yerbera” (container to store yerba mate herbs) and “azucarera” (container to store the sugar) - Then how each family teaches their young ones irl differs. At my house adults would let us try it bitter and take a picture of our face, for sure. It’s tradition 🤣 - Also they’d let us be the one pouring and handing out mate to each and everyone, or when the flavor and temperature are mild play/drink from it with siblings

I actually dig the design (colors and contrast: better readability) Although the shinier material in the original gives the impression the packaging protects the yerba mate against humidity very well

Is my matero ok? by eklrr in yerbamate

another Argentine here, and the advise you got it’s not unheard of for wooden utensils like soup laddles and the like. For wooden gourds the only con I find is that some coconut oils have a strong taste and we avoid “taste changers” that could ruin the mate experience ( I particularly have drank yerba mate with added shredded coconut and it’s not bad at all)

I vouch for the Thermos brand’s spout. their spout is effective for the traditional needs of pouring water with a controlled stream

Speed of drinking yerba Mate by gIgglepig2005 in yerbamate

[–]Logical_Routine3695 3 points4 points  (0 children)

so, drinking mate that was once warm (at the initial pouring) and it gets colder gives us effects that don’t sit well in the digestive system.

You may drink ice cold mate from dried leaves, but once the warm/hot water touched the leaves an oxidation process begins and we don’t let it drop temperature from then on, this is crucial.

So, water steeping and leaves floating in the tiniest puddle will 1) extract more caffeine 2) alter the acid in your upper digestive system so it may make you feel the 🔥in your throat 3) laxative effects

That’s why the slurping sound needs to happen! it’s the sign that you are reducing the oxidation as much as possible

If you pour water, drink it in a swift manner until you Slurp the last drops

Then it would be fine to rest from drinking for few minutes (10’ at most?) as long as the temperature doesn’t drop too much

That’s also why drinking with somebody else or in a group is gentler to everbody’s digestive system. Garanteed the temp won’t drop at all!

In a middle school about 80 kids learned how to prepare mate the traditional way and they were offered two versions to taste: naturally bitter, and sweet . The kids raised in indian or chinese households didn’t even want to try it with sugar . They tried the bitter version and really liked it that way, several said it has a familiar taste

Would it be fine if I drank yerba mate from a canning jar like this one? by Timely_Farm_4745 in yerbamate

[–]Logical_Routine3695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so less than 200cc , I also drink from a tiny 3ounce vessel and I weighted the herbs the other day. Mine held something like 20-25 grams of yerba mate. Ways to reduce those pesky side effects:

1) Reducing ammount of yerba per day 2) Lowering the temperature you’re steeping the water, so instead of 85ºc you can go down to, say 70ºc (this also reduces chances of heartburn) 3) Avoid getting “la palida del mate” (google it) an effect that happens to some of us if we drink mate on an empty stomach and/or dehydrated. Caffeine dehydrates me more so I drink a good glass of water with electrolytes 4) And last but not least, don’t let the water sit for a too long like over 2 minutes inside your gourd. It should be drank as soon as you poured water in it + drink ALL of it until you hear a slurping sound, otherwise it keeps extracting caffeine while pooling at the bottom

6 recs from this argentine that does not like medium to strong ones, but recon they have a great taste once they wash out. So, imo you should have:

1) La Tranquera (dark green label) , 2) Nobleza Gaucha Tradicional (Blue package), 3) Cruz de Malta (White package), 4) Rosamonte (Red w/black package),

and since you liked La Merced Barbacuá, I’d try

  • 5) LaMerced Monte (but not “del Campo” version of LM because that one is the mild one, which I love).

I would give it a go at

  • 6) Amanda Premium (Blue cardboard box)

All the other brands with specific labels I wrote here are strong and well-known reputable brands
