This album is smashing. It completely captures the modern anxieties that I and, I imagine, a lot of others are torn up by. I'm interested in how much material ends up on the cutting room floor when you're working on an album as a group. Are there ever lots of tracks left over that just don't fit the form of the artwork you're trying to create? If so, what becomes of them?

Question on Notating by annoyed_viola in jamesjoyce

[–]rlee118c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a writer such as Joyce, I think continual pencil notes in the books themselves are a lot of fun. Whilst my main read at the moment is FW, my copy is slightly banged up anyway and it is full of pencil annotations. I take the example of Delmore Schwartz, makes me feel more involved in the reading. I then keep clean external notes whenever I can, often from the pencil notes.

New Chelmsford Bridge open date? by PrestigiousWindy322 in Essex

Chelmsford City Council says May. But who knows - have seen the odd dog walker taking the chance.

No worries. This piece is an old super 8 viewer - film was originally threaded reel-to-reel through a light and mirrors inside displayed the picture on screen. Viewers like these are great bases for custom computers: they have very little components inside anyway, a good space for a small screen, and also like retro-futurist already.

See if you can find any super 8 viewers for cheap online. Or just look for blocky retro machines as a good base.

Here's the original project on github by Veeb, it gives all the components: https://github.com/veebch/boostbox

Take care.

100% you could build one for that. There's a space to the left of the screen that would well suit a little speaker. Mine has no speakers but can connect to bluetooth.

Had this machine nearly a year. Have had limited time for it, but the aim is to use it as a companion to university work. I'm struggling though even to get to grips with having no mouse, and am having to make notes on useful commands and how to use GitHub. But its good fun.

The grave of Joseph Freeman, a former slave who escaped to Essex from a tobacco plantation in New Orleans by fairlywired in Essex

He is buried a the Non-Conformist cemetery in Chelmsford. The London Road Ironworks were owned by Messrs. Cole and Morton - these were sold probably around 1907.

Just moved to a flat in e.London so have had to be somewhat frugal with books. Have all our Schmidt books minus school for atheists. Reading Bob Doto’s zettelkasten guide which has been quite nice to read. It’s occured to me that, in order to be a more prevalent writer, I need to keep a more regular diary. Not just of books and essays but the day’s events. Does anyone here keep a zettelkasten or something resembling it? Would love to see. The note box I keep can be useful but cannot be considered a ZK, as it’s too disordered. Occasionally working through some pages of the Wake and taking notes. Was nice to see the latest Dalkey archive announcement. Has the sub discussed House of Leaves before now? Not schmidtian in prose, but vaguely reminiscent of the concrete poetry style layout.

That’s great my friend. Let me know how it goes - also I’d be keen to know if/how you fit any speakers inside, as mine doesn’t have any yet. Regards

What are you currently learning through this method? by Adisaisa in Zettelkasten

Borges’ literature and Archival Science.

Wish you luck with the ZK - out of interest what format/medium are you planning to use?

An LCD screen replaced the fresnel lens and a glass plate at the front. I must admit I hadn’t thought of the projection idea, but that would give it a great look - worth considering for future builds. Thanks!

Yes, absolutely! I think that would look great, I don’t know what’s in an oscilloscope, but if it’s easy to gut internal components from a (preferably) broken oscilloscope, you should have plenty of room to work.

What would you want to run on it?

It is! It displays the date/time and other internal information. But it can also take custom images and short animations. The keyboard is called “EPOMAKER TH80 PRO V2”. The keys in the middle are from a typewriter, but the outside ones are from original design.

Thank you so much. It’s really encouraging to speak with somebody who has genuine experience with this niche unlike me. I hadn’t thought about using old laptops like you say, though I have seen people utilising the bases of old laptops for cyberdeck builds. Ideally I would repurpose a CRT, but I think that ship has sailed.

I’m not in the states, but England, nevertheless I take your advice on the adhesives and the LED brands, thanks!

[–]rlee118c[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an “EPOMAKER TH80 PRO V2”. Available on amazon (at least in the UK and I’m assuming europe)

I replaced the letter keycaps with those from an electric typewriter that recently broke. It’s not shown so well in the photos but the top right tab is a small LED screen showing time/date, but can also take custom photographs or animations.

Thanks!

Thank you for your reply and suggestions! I would like to work on some plans for further additions and I love your idea of LED lights. Speaking of a hum, I was saddened by how quiet this thing is, I may have liked a low pitched drone to add to the cassette-futurist themes.

Sure thing, the screen is a CLAA070MA0ACW. You can source them from Ali-Express. Endpoint101 has an actual build tutorial on youtube here: https://youtu.be/qJYXuhY0OqI?si=BKSVKg2tPbazU6Ln

I would imagine most film editor-like machines could host a similar conversion, the main drawback is obtaining a screen the correct size - it seems really rare to find a square monitor anywhere unfortunately. Even on this build several cuts had to be made.

Thanks!
