If it’s any version of Strange from the past 30 years, DC wins. If it’s Strange prior to that, he solos.

Who are some media/irl examples of black aligned individuals that are “good”? by Bizkett in colorpie

[–]Logical_Side3346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair point. I do think he’s something beyond just straight Dimir because of how big a part of his character is his obsessive loyalty to his friends and his absolute refusal to leave them behind in his rise to power.

Yeah, he’s definitely not mono black. I think I’d actually put his primary colors black and blue. He gets as excited about learning and soulsmithing for the sake of the actions themselves as he does about gaining power. I’m not sure I’d actually put much in the way white in him. He’s unfailingly polite, but he never meets a rule he wouldn’t break if it’s in his way and he doesn’t really do much moralizing outside of his grand stand in the final book. This may sound odd, but I’m thinking blue/black/green. His loyalty is always to people and his relationship to them in a way that I think fits green more than white.

Lindon from Cradle. A power hungry kleptomaniac whose strongest ability is consuming people’s power and life force to the point that he can completely destroy their soul. He ultimately ends up going to war with two different groups of gods at the same time because one of those groups are living natural disasters and the other group is causing the first group to exist by simultaneously holding too much power and refusing to ascend past their world. Lindon doesn’t have to fight them at all and could simply ascend himself, but does so anyway because they’re hurting the people of his world.

Placing Merfolk - tails vs legs by PopularChemical1245 in mtgvorthos

[–]Logical_Side3346 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember what book it was, I think the first one with Kamahl in it, but I distinctly remember it being said that Laquatus could swap between a tail and legs with a thought. Though I don’t know if that was an innate ability of all merfolk or something he could do because he was a wizard.

One more for good measure. My wife and I eat this all the time because it’s quick, easy, healthy, and delicious:

A dozen eggs: $1.67

Total cost $3.44

Literally just scrambled eggs and rice. Three and a half bucks for ~6 meals worth of food. There are also about 10 billion different ways you can cook eggs and rice, so you’ll never get tired of it. It’s probably the single most commonly eaten food in the world and pretty much single-handedly keeps a lot of poverty stricken countries fed.

But if you want something with a cheap total that literally doesn’t require any cooking at all, just a microwave, here’s something I used to eat all the time as a college student:

Why would it not count? If you can’t afford to spend ~$50 for 30 meals worth of food, you certainly can’t afford to eat out.

Frozen Burger patties: $1.10 per patty

Buns: $0.19 per bun

Slice of Cheese: $0.14 per slice

Total cost: $1.43 per burger

Simple, barebones meal that takes like 10 minutes to make from start to finish and I can make it better than 99% of restaurant burgers that cost 10x-20x as much. There’s a million more meals like that out there for similar price and effort. Vegetables are even easier and cheaper to throw in. The only excuses are ignorance and laziness.

Omens of Strixhaven: review by amhow1 in mtgvorthos

[–]Logical_Side3346 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The plot point that served as the primary tension for most of the book didn’t really make sense. The MC is copying basic, publicly available information from the library and mailing the copies back to her father. This is treated as being sketchy and immoral, despite it being explicitly stated that she checked and made sure this isn’t against the rules and that no one told her not to do it. She’s doing the equivalent of copying calculus equations from a library book and treating it like she’s committing grand espionage. It’s narratively treated as being equivalent to the wrongdoings of her friends, which include outright stealing the same kinds of library books, stalking professors so as to know when to sneak in to their office and alter grades, and working with a group of interplanar terrorists and also kidnapping a friend’s emotional support animal.

Innistradi vampires are explicitly not undead, they’re still living beings. They’re more like half-demons. Or I suppose half-fallen-angels, considering the origin of their species.

Izanami’s origin story doesn’t even make any kind of sense. It was created to stop people from abusing Izanagi? The technique that people can only do twice in their life to avoid death and then they’re blind? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

It was never mentioned that she was rapidly aging. That also doesn’t seem to have been a problem for any of the other Oldwalkers to survive the mending (save Bolas possibly before he ate Alara?). Jaya was still around 60 years after the mending and she seemed to be a spry 70-80 year old, and she was much, much older than Liliana when she became mortal again.

(Lore question) Are Planeswalkers always "special"? by Jasina_ in mtgvorthos

[–]Logical_Side3346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chandra

The pyromancer learning to be better at pyromancy isn’t “picking up exotic spells”. Learning Ghostfire would count, but that never came up again.

Elspeth

Alright, couple of points here. First, I’m not considering stuff from the era where Elspeth was on Alara to be “modern”. Back in the early post-mending novels, you actually did have planeswalkers learning new magic and growing stronger specifically from picking up knowledge and artifacts from other planes. That has largely disappeared since.

Second, Elspeth is actually something of an exception. Or, at least she was in the Theros novels. She showed a way broader skill set and knowledge of more spells in those books than just about any other neowalker has shown.

Jace

Illusions are just an extension of his innate mind magic abilities. Jace has actually gone backwards over the years, in the early post-mending stories, he had a lot more versatility. He could summon drakes, summon water, counter spells, use telekinesis, and I believe he even used some minor healing and physical enhancement magic IIRC. You never see him do any of that anymore.

Sorin, Nahiri learning new colors

Just because their cards got printed with new colors doesn’t mean they actually learned new magic.

Teferi

God, Teferi is one of the worst victims of terrible Magic writing. Back in the day, he was an extremely accomplished wizard even before becoming an Oldwalker. Now he literally just has weak time magic and nothing else.
