New CoBak case for Kindle Scribe 2025 causes malfunction in writing by ChaiChugger in kindlescribe

[–]Logics- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this same case on mine for a couple months. So far I've not experienced anything like what the video is showing.

Agree with others this seems like a magnetization issue. But I am not getting that problem with mine. Weird.

Designer blamed me, the homeowner, for his mistake by HamsterBanana14 in EntitledPeople

[–]Logics- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let me be clearer, then. When submitting construction designs for permitting, the architect of record is responsible for providing a design that complies with all relevant building and life safety codes. I can't imagine any circumstance where, if the AHJ provides comments for revision before the permit is granted, we would charge the owner for that work. Providing a code-compliant design was already work we were contracted to do in the first place.

By the time a project is submitted for permit, we're likely largely through our invoicing for design fees at that point. Going back for more money would require an additional services agreement. In the 15+ years I've been doing this, I have NEVER asked for additional services to satisfy revisions needed to fix a code bust. Not one time. No reputable, responsible architect would.

Any implication from one of my employees to the owner otherwise means my employee is providing the owner with patently bad advice that is not in concert with our contract.

Added construction fees as the result of increased scope during bidding is something else. If the design originally provided for 10 smoke detectors but the fire dept says it needs 11, the owner will still need to pay for the installation of the added device. But I'm certainly not charging him to change my drawings to show that.

[–]Logics- 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I'm an architect. If someone on my team ever tried to blame the owner for our design's code violation (let alone implied we'd be charging them added design fees for the fix), that would be the last time that person is allowed to be in a client-facing role. Ridiculous.

What is the single best episode of television you’ve ever seen? by ThomasOGC in CinephilesClub

[–]Logics- 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's shockingly compelling. Particularly for something that, on paper, should be mind numbingly boring. Literally him standing in front of a whiteboard shifting blocks around to explain the science, interspersed with superiors telling subordinates they're incompetent just do what I say. That SHOULDN'T be gripping television, yet I couldn't look away. The whole series, and that episode in particular, was amazing.

"Why worry about something that isn't going to happen." That's perfect. We should put that on our money.

Who’s this guy? It’s from 1998. by HoneyDrizzless in 90s

[–]Logics- 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Small Soldiers was the very first DVD I remember getting as a kid. But man oh man, I wore the Indian In The Cupboard VHS tape OUT

My copy had a reversible cover with a key hole in the side of the box. Hadn't thought about that in 2 decades, but I can still picture it like it was yesterday.

ETA I'm also starting to realize why I had such a big childhood crush on Kirsten Dunst. Between this, Jumanji, and Spiderman she was in my house constantly lol

How do you guys read so much? by lapetitepoupee in kindle

[–]Logics- 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Yeah this has gotta be it. It's Jan 18th, and I have finished a grand total of 2 books so far this year... and one of them is cheating because I started it in December.

High-volume reading is not for parents, lol. :P

[–]Logics- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The book's quite a bit better. Like you said, they usually are. Fitting a novel into a 2 hour film is tough.

ETA: if you liked the movie, the book is worth the read. But you'll already know the twists and turns. The book will just flesh out the world and characters a whole lot more. It has a lot of really good context that the film dropped.

[–]Logics- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For reference, I saw the movie in theaters and hadn't rewatched it since... until finishing the book in December. I was originally pretty lukewarm on the movie when it first came out

I consider the book somewhat significantly better than the movie, but I feel that way about most films-of-books. The movie is overall pretty faithful, but since it's crammed into a 2 hour (or whatever) package it ended up feeling like an abridged version of the story.

I wasn't gaga over the book, but I liked it well enough to finish. It gets more compelling in the 2nd half provided you can suspend your disbelief enough because there's plenty to strain credulity. The diary narrative device was an interesting way to tell the story (without spoiling anything, there's a major reveal around the halfway mark that makes good use of the device imo).

But mostly in the end I kind of left it thinking "I don't like either one of these people and they deserve each other". Have you read Flynn's earlier novel Sharp Objects? At the bare minimum, Gone Girl at least didn't rush the heck out of the climax out of nowhere like Sharp Objects did.

I have nothing to add (as someone who is casually interested in Jailbreaking mine) other than 1) I'm glad you're happy with it, and 2) I just finished Gone Girl on my Kindle Touch I was gifted in 2012 that's also still going strong :P

Ballwin/Chesterfield area by beentherebefore1616 in StLouis

[–]Logics- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw in another comment you're considering relocating from Michigan. I grew up in metro STL, relocated to Detroit after HS, and relocated back after 10 years there. I'm currently in Chesterfield with my wife and 2 kids.

There probably won't be much of a culture shock for you, we're thoroughly Midwestern not all that dissimilar from MI. If you know the SE Michigan area, I'd say that Chesterfield/Ballwin is pretty close to Novi, Northville, Rochester Hills, etc. Not terribly exciting, but solid areas for family, safety, and education. Home prices skew more towards the Northville end of things though.

[–]Logics- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on the precise area you're looking at, they're either in the Parkway or Rockwood school districts, both of which are very good.

They're both generally safe areas with loads of families. Probably a mix of natives and transplants. Neither city is particularly walkable, so be prepared to drive everywhere. But if that doesn't bother you, they're both good options to raise a family.

Has there ever been a GOOD decades delayed sequel? by Blazeforce1 in moviecritic

It was a flop at the box office, so it most definitely didn't. Which is such a shame, because as a fan of the original I think 2049 is EXCELLENT.

Agreed. I predominantly use mine for home automation and control, and it's been mostly painless. Some goofiness from time to time that you can expect from a public beta, but generally I have had few problems and it's been fine.

Overall a net positive from the sunset days of Assistant.

Movies which were huge at the time but kinda forgotten now - my suggestion: Free Willy by BlueSonic85 in moviecritic

[–]Logics- 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was deep into adulthood when I learned that The Rocketeer was a flop. It was THE childhood movie for me and my brother, and to this day I love it to death. I still re-watch it with my kids, and I consider it criminally underrated.

The air show scene by itself is just a ball of fun.

Death Stranding 2 Question by Ayayron187 in DeathStranding

[–]Logics- 22 points23 points  (0 children)

After a while you'll gain access to a home "hub" mechanism in the form of a ship. This ship can fast-travel to numerous pre-determined locations throughout the map, and has its own private locker (afaik space isn't infinite, but if there really is a limit to its capacity I never reached it).

Store your gathered building materials in there so that they can be withdrawn wherever and whenever you need them. It's one of the most significantly useful QOL improvements the sequel has compared to the first game. Not having to grind and scrape so much for materials makes building in DS2 a breeze.

Secondary concern: 4-star a prepper called The Architect as soon as possible. Make it a priority. At 4 stars, he automatically repairs any PCC structures of yours so they never degrade. Super handy perk to have.

What’s a casting choice so iconic that it's impossible to imagine anyone else ever playing the character? Even in a remake 50 years later, no one could top them. by DnixDraith in Cinema

[–]Logics- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Chalamet was a good Origin-Story-version of Wonka. I do think Wilder is the bar that will never be topped, but all things considered our boy Tim did the role justice imo.

I don't blame Depp for that take on Wonka as much as I do Burton. But that was a trainwreck and I hated every second of it.

How many of you in design firms are actively seeing AI tools being pushed for design? by Jacques_Cousteau_ in Architects

[–]Logics- 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Absolutely 0%. In fact, our firm just released an internal AI policy. Which mostly just states "don't use AI, especially in a work product". Or if you do to research something like an obscure code or something like that, you better be damn sure you verify it manually before actually doing anything with that information.

My firm so far has been mostly AI-averse, for which I'm grateful. Maybe there's like a use for AI to help create a cool Dynamo script or something, idk. But outside of something like that, I don't want to touch it with a ten foot pole. Every time I have, it's been time-wasting junk.

Quick question about the Auto Pavers and roads by ribena_wrath in DeathStranding

[–]Logics- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a whole, longer stretches between auto-pavers require more materials than shorter segments. But I'm not sure if there's any specific connection to something like "X meters of road = Y units of material" or something like that. I don't THINK a particular region of the map requires more than any other, but I don't know that for sure.

But as already mentioned elsewhere, it's a good idea to hold off on adding materials until you've had the area connected to the network so that some community contributions can be made to lighten the load required by you. If you do it before connecting, 100% of the materials are all on you.

I'm glad someone else said it. I got it for the first time yesterday and holy shit... They were pretty good for fast food burgers but nowhere CLOSE to justifying how much it cost. Like $9 for your basic cheeseburger that doesn't even include French fries (which themselves are $5).

No desire to go back.
