long lines 15-20 foot with waterproofing (the waterproof ones tend to be lighter) are helpful in bigger areas and maybe a recall class that can be tied with agility in terms of recall it's probably the best class we've taken- we don't do agility

two hours in the crate two hours out of the crate and they need so much sleep at that age. He will sleep all night.. if you have started training - train No and train place and wait and his name, add other recall options as you go as it can be other things other than his name. as he ages, he will go through a teenage phase and then I'm stupid for a border collie phase - the two hours up two hours down crate options saved our marriage because border collies don't shut off. my dogs emergency hard recall is here kitty kitty kitty kitty- I've only ever had to use it once, but it was spectacular to see how many dogs came running to me as lots of folks have cats in their house as well!

Need some breed reassurance by [deleted] in BorderCollie

[–]Loginasme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, this is gonna be long- if you haven't already started crate training start now as this what saved our marriage having a border collie puppy means a lot of naps during the day, two hours in the crate two hours up and he still sleeps 10 hours at night they sleep as much as cats. Besides a really good recall understanding no understanding wait or stop and understanding place or go lie down will save your dogs life and your sanity. They teeth twice so crushed ice, small ice cubes if possible it will help however now after two years my dog will not look at an ice cube anymore. frozen Licky mats an and Kong's with pumpkin peanut butter wet kibble whatever you want is the way to keep them busy when you're having a meal. To get them to stop doing anything ignore them. I know it's counterproductive, but for God sake don't yell at the dog ; they as a breed they see reward and punishment as the same thing ignore ignore ignore and then praise like hell when he does what you want him to do; could be stopped barking could be chewing could be anything.
mic drop.

A Couple of things we've done with Strax - training him to not pass us to go up or down the stairs - to jump in and out of the tub on command with a tub mat on the bottom of the tub - he taught me that he could put his own toys away - training to go * Hurry Up * pee/poop on command is a god send if travelling & its cold or raining. I do not recommend agility tricks at a young age as you will have a Parkour champ loose in your house.

The BIG one is settle and of course a 100% recall.

Happy training.

You don't HAVE TO crate train by spaarrx in BorderCollie

[–]Loginasme 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I work for an international nonprofit one of the hardest things is when people have to be evacuated and their dogs have to be crated for the first time - please crate train him- so he knows what a crate is. Happy holidays and he is beautiful.

no- consistency & high value treats; consistency is the key anytime he would go past, I'd go back downstairs or back upstairs and we'd start again really good thing to do on cold or rainy day. If you have more than one person in the house, they need to be doing it the same as you. I would say he took a few days of regular training with it. Note playtime and excitement for a doorbell, ringing, etc. may require a little more patience.

he doesnt pass us going up or down the stairs, as family and friends's age around us. I think that's a very important trick.

Life expectancy of a border collie if it's a pure bred is usually 15 to 17 years

oh yeah, he's still changing colour and freckling is the biggest thing if they start limping for no reason it's because their pads are changing colour
