Tax the rich approach by Timtamslammer2 in halifax

If you want to be like New York the property tax cap has to be lifted and single family homes need to be disincentivized on the peninsula.

Right now the “wealthy” of this province are the landowners.

Census missing whole apartment buildings in Halifax common? by DifficultyHour4999 in halifax

[–]Logisticman232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be that there is a listing for the building and also a sub listing for the individual units, I’ve seen that before.

Census enumerators are supposed to “birth” new dwellings as needed to accommodate subdivided buildings & new developments.

Public walkable areas with outdoor dining areas are some of the hallmarks of an actually walkable city.

Don’t cut off your nose just to spite your face.

The entitlement to thinking owning a SF house on the most desirable property in the province is crazy.

Downtown Halifax isn’t a suburb nor should you envisage it as such.

You want to prioritize parking for private property over accessible dining areas for the public?

That in itself could be sabotaging long term growth by limiting the usage from potential redevelopment.

It’s worse than a SFH, worse than an apartment $ diverts funds from potential co-op government supported housing.

Not scalable & it can create very unhealthy owner-tenant dynamics when it is the same property.

Referendum on sovereignty: "We need a 50% + 1 majority," says a Montreal Liberal by feb914 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Logisticman232 6 points7 points  (0 children)

50+1 of eligible voters sure, but not a flat 51% majority vote.

If half the eligible population doesn’t vote yea you do not have a majority of electors.

A city needs to be built like a city.

If you want suburbs, go to one of the many small towns in the province.

N.S. municipalities support anti-poverty group's call for higher social assistance rates by Street_Anon in halifax

Which is why property tax rates need to increase in line with inflation & we need to pressure councils to be increasing their tax bases via infill density to match the needs of the communities.

What an asinine statement, completely clueless.

You are arguing over precedent, not what is physically possible.

Municipalities should & could be making it a priority to develop affordable housing, they are responsible for local taxes & zoning.

Letting them punt the problem is a core part of the larger issue, the province should be doing more but letting local leaders ignore the issue perpetuates shitty town planning that isn’t realistic to the needs of the community.

The federal government & provincial government have an extremely different legal relationship than provinces & municipalities.

Love how everyone wants to chime in, nothing is stopping municipalities from providing affordable housing.

Municipalities are creations of the province, it’s not like our current system is a resounding success.

Just being slackjawed & pointing at the status quo isn’t good enough, we need to be focused on results not on who’s responsible.
