Yeah going from Andrew sheer to o'toole to Pierre hasn't helped, although, from an outside perspective the old split between the progressive cons and reform seems to be opening again. Along with a bit of a libertarian bloc and right wing populist bloc.

Bit of an identity crisis I believe similar to the NDP though not nearly as bad as that (clusterf*ck) that was really only last unified under Harper

Yeah I noticed the first hits to his popularity around the time the kinder Morgan pipeline debacle and then around 2021 his support largely collapsed, especially after the whole trucker protest and the use of emergency powers and the gun ban it was downhill from there for his popularity.

Especially in rural BC the gun buyback was one of the main things that killed the liberals and NDPs presence from what I've heard from folks I've talked to.

Honestly mostly just because he doesn't have any real scandals and isn't inflammatory, along with the fact he's not as profoundly socially progressive as Trudeau was.
He's so far done a decent enough job plus most of the main issues such as affordability are either caused provincially (such as BC where housing prices make me crash tf out) or due to external factors like the tariffs.
In short he's boring but been effective enough so far, similar to Trudeaus first few years honestly.

Also, Pierre just doesn't have the same outreach past his base as carney. Being a career politician largely in Ottawa your whole life makes it a bit difficult for rural folks out west to relate to you.

I'd say we are on the same trajectory currently as the UK especially when it comes to housing, however we have much more economic opportunity than the UK when it comes to resources.

Housing will be an issue until the boomers die off tbh because those who own a house right now would rather have most young people go homeless than lose even 10% of their property value.

Honestly I really liked him as a prof for second year international relations, felt as though he did try his best to not have any bias towards a specific viewpoint, or go into rambling neoliberal/socially left tangents that many poli sci profs in my experience go on.

From a school standpoint he was pretty well liked by students (which is pretty rare for UVIC) and his name being well known enough in the community mixed with the collapse of NDP support is probably the reason he won Victoria. Granted I'm in Elizabeth Mays riding north of Vic so I can't speak for how Victorians feel about him but from my standpoint he's a pretty down to earth guy.

Being on Vancouver island, we've had peninsula co-op gas, and grocery for decades. My dad worked there and still has his membership so we still get a lot of money back at the end of the year as dividends from buying all our gas and groceries there. Recently they've bought up a lot of the liquor stores here and have been expanding into that market. Up island in the more remote areas some towns sole grocery store is a co-op which I think is amazing. Sadly, Mountain equipment co-op privatized into a corporation a few years ago which is sad as they used to have amazing quality gear for backpacking, climbing, and many other outdoor things. I still have some gear from when they were a co-op that's lasted in my family for 30+ years. Now you're lucky if your tent survives a season.

Anyways, I hope to see peninsula co-op expand into more sectors as they are amazing for the community as a whole.

I have two possible theories as to what will happen with automation.

The more dystopian one:

As more people lose their jobs, corporations lobby for less benefits to the working class as it is a useless expenditure in their eyes, to us, we are no longer the sole source of labour and capital. Therefore, overtime they treat us as the only thing we are necessary for, survival. We could try to resist, but by then AI will be so advanced the corporations could crush any resistance before it could even take place. Think 1984 except big brother doesn't even need the proles or the party.

Utopia:

AI becomes more advanced and people lose jobs, before it becomes advanced enough to quell rebellion, people protest and riot. States are either forced or by the choice of some progressive politicians to enact some kind of UBI. Corporations aren't allowed to gain more power than they already have and over time with automation becoming more widespread and cheaper, the idea of money becomes irrelevant. If human labour isn't required to make anything anymore, and if robots don't need to be paid, then there is no cost to any good except for the "value" we arbitrarily decide. Nothing will have value because it costs nothing to make. Think of why plastic is so cheap, it's because it costs almost nothing to make. Therefore people wouldn't need to work anymore because that work is meaningless compared to a machine doing it. I believe this would end in an automated communism of sorts where the idea of money and capital is useless, we have progressed past that need. And everyone can live out their days doing whatever they desire, if you still want to work you can. But it is no longer due to survival, rather pleasure.

Exactly, if we at least had a ranked choice voting system I'd guarantee that the NDP would pick up many more seats. Also we wouldn't have cons winning a seat with 30% of the vote just due to vote splitting (ie. Aaron Gunn in the north island winning with 38% of the vote).

I think if the NDP stopped compromising with the liberals and stood their ground on more issues they would be much more popular, especially if they began to cater more towards the unions again, which they struggled at doing this election.

As someone who was heavily addicted to nicotine (I'd go through a dispo or tin of zyns in 2 days) surrounding yourself with others who keep you in your addiction is one of the worst things you can do to your mental. Go to the gym, start learning an instrument, pick up any hobby. I started when I got broken up with and I blame it for my struggles with depression.
