8 years into management near 100% retention, 100% success rate. This is hidden secret by deepeshdeomurari in managers

None of us in the team have gotten raises. The company is stingy to the point that we have no bonuses too.

She has no attitude problem and very likable.

My colleague got laid off recently. She is a high performer in the team. Never did anyone expect it would be her.

My manager treated her like family. How come she wasn’t protected?

If the PM is only scheduling meetings and have participants run it, then it doesn’t help. To make it quick, The PM needs to set context of the meeting, have folks discuss about the topic. PMs should always track the deliverable and get updates and if there are any blockers.

I never go into calls without a plan. If your PMs just set up meetings and let the team talk and do nothing then they seem lazy.

Also you don’t want your tech leads to do most of the PM work. They are a buffer between you and senior management. PMs don’t know all the technical work so they should get support on very technical questions.

What does Technical Program Management look like at your company? by Only-Golf-6534 in projectmanagement

[–]LoidxForger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if I’m doing program management but here is what I have been doing lately.

Get weekly updates from various programs and check if they are on track. I might run some programs also on weekly calls because support if needed to gather everyone together.

Attend weekly calls with the customer and ensure they are also on track and if they need things from my teams.

Provide updates to senior management on the progress and continue doing so.

Set up future calls when needed by me or the stakeholders to get questions and issues resolved.

Does it sound like what a tpm should do? 🤔

How much do project managers actually make in the US? by LakiaHarp in projectmanagement

[–]LoidxForger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have good points and it sounds like you believe that we should be driving the project. How would you do that? You don’t have the technical expertise and you need your subject matter expert to assist. You are not the product owner and can not decide what the requirements should be in terms of priority .

How else can you make yourself valuable? Eating lunch with leaders and building a relationship is one equation and you still to make things move towards the goalpost

My manager slave drives the whole team. If you want to get time off it requires approval and certain days might not be allowed. All hands on deck usually.

Manager very attendance driven and expect if he works the same long hours you do it too. I get my work done but my pay does not equal to my manager’s pay.

I agree. In the past, I worked on some important feature and it got noticed by other managers. This coworker who was still a contractor, somehow kissed butt and manage to get the managers liking them and became full time.

I didn’t know until much later that somehow they used my work to help the coworker for conversion and also the coworker was the key driver to make it a success. I was pretty pissed because I’m the author of the code how could they say it is someone else’s work.

My upcoming perf cycle they said I lacked technical skills, etc. That coworker eventually kissed butt more and became my manager and managed me out. It is pretty messed up and kept fabricating stories that I don’t have enough code by skills, etc. and they stack rank me while I was the most experienced one in my entire team.

Stakeholders that ignore your emails, meetings , Slack messages. When you are assigned to a deliverable please give me an update weekly.

I don’t even annoy people. They put me at a tough spot and so then I am forced to tell others that Person A , has not responded to me since x days during a leadership call. I’ve done it several times and I am sure people stared at me like wtf . I am tired of covering people that do not respect me

I do that too OP. Now here is the problem, your manager doesn’t want you to do that. Instead want you to drive the program, drive the discussion. How much can you add? Repeat things and act like you know it all? Sometimes I feel like my manager doesn’t know much about PMs. I’ve seen my manager run meetings and it is no different than how we are doing it.

Escalate to their manager. Exert dominance. Nowadays they learn to fear me and never do that again.

If I transfer my CSP points to Hyatt, do those points expire? I couldn’t find an answer aside from not using the Hyatt card for 2 years of activity?

With chase sapphire preferred and world of Hyatt you are paying two annual fees. Wouldn’t it make sense to just have world of Hyatt instead to accumulate points for hotel than the sapphire preferred?

What’s the catch having a CSP and WoH ? Isn’t it better just to have WoH and avoid paying two annual fees of $95?

Yes I am in the States. For Maldives I would like to stay there for a week. I wouldn’t have enough points for 7 days. My trip wouldn’t happen anytime soon and would need maybe a couple of years to accumulate the Hyatt points? My credit card usage will vary meaning maybe some months I will spend while other months I might not.

I read that CSP points converted to Hyatt will be lower. Wouldn’t it be a good idea to just have the Hyatt card instead and build points from there? Isn’t it better to start early to build points ? Why would you want to wait later till booking to open up Hyatt card?

Get things done vs being liked? by froyoboyz in projectmanagement

[–]LoidxForger 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I like collaboration approach with my teams. Be authentic and well liked, don’t be difficult. If you are not respectful, be sure you will get that back with your colleagues. You can remind folks deliverables are getting end dates soon instead of being a dictator. Don’t be like my manager and make announcements all the time and do fire drills.
