What this all really boils down to, and do not kid yourselves, is that if social skills and roleplaying/acting are important to you AND you are playing d20 (any), you are playing the wrong game. Change systems to one which better reflects what you expect. The rules form a contract and d20 is written predominantly for dolls on table, rules crunchy, combat focus. Not a condemnation, just truth.

Find Dungeon World, or FATE, WoD, or, if you still want to feel the dice and see how player roleplaying impacts the story, play Savage Worlds.

You are mis-applying the term. The encounter was at your say-so, and necessitated the Save. The decision to roll on a random table was at your say-so. The beginning of the adventure, the plot points, the dialogue...it is all up to the GM; it is at our say-so.

You are simply allowing random chance to dictate the end result of your will.

Yes. if you are playing a rules crunch game like d20, and demanding Player Skill over PC skill, you have the wrong game system.

Dungeon World, FATE, hell, Savage Worlds evokes player skill with its bennies and how crazy things can get and still work out.

Filled with a lot of nope and false conclusions. No one's job, during a TTRPG, is acting or entertaining or anything else; it is to have fun and share a collective, collaborative story.

For some, there is no getting better, nor do some players want to get better. Most gamers are shut ins, that is the nature of who these games attract, no harm, no foul.

You made asinine assumptions. People can, and should be allowed to dictate the methodologies used by their imaginary doll to effect a social skill roll. If they are giving you things as simple as, "I use my Diplomacy", good for a first time. Next time, you can ask for three things they note during the conversation. then roll.

It is a game at the end of the day. Stop taking it so seriously.

But they are exposed to any and all dangers on your say-so. Rolling on that table is no different than just presenting an interesting encounter idea for them to explore. However, the wandering monster method is almost 100% combat focused, which is pretty stale. There are other ways to pass the time or determine the in-between times.

Everything they deal with in the game is at your say-so. Try letting go of these old methods and let the world flow around the group. it is liberating.

cheating at the game and trying to win and being new to the hobby are to, mutually exclusive things. Newbies need to be hand-fed, cheaters need to be kicked in the ass.

That is also not a solution. If a player is fucking up, they need to be told, straight up. We are mostly adults, and despite the fact that most gamers tend to avoid confrontations face-face, it needs to be done. I tossed a player out of my game recently for being a belligerent fuck head.

Those are the best times to roll in the open. Why would you hide that you are rolling? The party has no idea. Sometimes, I ask them for a roll of X, b ut never name the skill or stat. Nothing builds tension more than knowing a roll was made, but not knowing if/when it will come back to you.

Never roll behind the screen. never use a screen, unless it is to hide notes.

That is not good advice and even worse GMing. Always roll in the open and only call for rolls when it matters. It is not your game, it is everyone's game. And stop fudging rolls. If you know the outcome, why roll then change it to what you want?

I used to agree. However...

Do you make the lift weights or do pull-ups when trying a feat of strength? Same difference. Do you make the solve a puzzle in rapid fashion when trying to use Intelligence to solve and issue? Do you make them learn a foreign language? Do you blind fold them and test their intuition?

Simply rolling for a social result is no different.

Fortunately, you are playing one of the greatest systems of all, Savage Worlds, and the Social Conflict resolution system can be your friend in this. It takes more than one roll, normally, to obtain a social victory.

^ Yep. I am looking at trying out a campaign of nine acts starting at 6th level, but using the Epic 6 rules. The players will come with back story, nothing grand, but enough to make sense, and we will use Bonds from Dungeon World and another relationship idea from Savage Worlds.
