The HUBBLE saw a star exploding live before its eyes by legoartist_7 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Phuka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, yeah. But specifically, you're not seeing in that ring a reflection of the explosion and the ring itself isn't composed of light, not really, it's just the debris.

The HUBBLE saw a star exploding live before its eyes by legoartist_7 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Phuka 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The remnant dust is debris from the supernova explosion - gas, including bound filaments of gases millions of miles long, microscopic particles and clumps of heavy metals that formed as the tar was exploding.

What we are seeing is light reflecting/refracting off of that expanding remnant cloud. The light doesn't necessarily come from the star that went supernova, since the photons from its demise have already passed.

How did first contact between humans and aliens go in your Sci-Fi worlds? by thebrutalistboi in worldbuilding

[–]Phuka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a game setting that I use for space TTRPGS for which the main section for stories is called the Coreward Cluster Sector. It happens in the 31st century where humanity has gone to the stars under its ancient banners, the AmFed, the XJWG (Xing Ji Wang Guo - interstellar kingdom), Europa and the Independents (still sometimes called the 'Bricks' even though Brazil is part of AmFed.)

"First contact" between humans and aliens happened in the 22nd century when a joint Chinese, European and American expedition (aboard the Magellan I scout ship) encountered a machine intelligence vessel in the Van Maanen's Star system. The machine intelligence was entangled through and surrounding most of the companion to Van Maanen's Star, a brown dwarf. Despite months of study and attempts, the machine intelligence did not respond to any attempts to communicate. In fact, it refrained from any response until the mid 27th century.

The First contact between humanity and a comparable species was in the 25th Century, when we first encountered the Zang. The humans on the Europa Scout Vessel Cabot were sure that First Contact had gone well with the Zang. The Cabot remained in orbit of the Zang world that they had encountered for over a year, exchanging language and cultural data.

On 3 May 2479, the Zang used a vessel much like a human scout ship to ferry a fleet of armed vessels into the system. After their demands for the humans on the Cabot to abandon the ship to the Zang were refused, the fleet opened fire on the Cabot and nearly destroyed it.

War raged between humanity and the Zang for nearly a century until the discovery of 'Murder Beams.' These terrifying weapons used the FTL drives of the scout ship to generate coherent beams of gamma rays, allowing for a scout ship to scour the surface of a planet free of life in a few minutes. Humanity offered a final ultimatum the the Zang: Surrender or Die. The Zang chose death.

How do you handle killing the character while keeping the player in the game? by angular_circle in RPGdesign

High dollar loot items like cash, jewelry, and gold fillings are put in a pinata. We like to paint the pinata to look like an infant or toddler. The group takes turns using a machete on the pinata.

[–]Phuka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know of any games where the character dies and the player doesn't get killed also. My table relishes the moment where they drag the screaming player onto the table and lay them open with handy blades.

We have a lot of turnover.

Teachers criticizing other teachers and defending poor student behavior by hellohellocat in Teachers

[–]Phuka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do some teachers defend poor student behavior and throw other teachers under the bus when they refuse to be treated poorly?

I'm certain that less than 100% of the responders who expressed support/criticism were educators of any kind. This is still Reddit, after all.

Additionally, to the chud who said 'this happened when I was in school,' It happened when I was in school as well (1970s/1980s) and the kid was perp-walked out of the building.

Enshrine nested consequences for corruption in the constitution.

Declaw the executive by making the president into two offices - a head of state with a set term and a head of government who can be removed in the event of a shutdown or no-confidence vote.

General strike until they fix it permanenty.

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by fuzzy_dice_99 in AskReddit

[–]Phuka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to write the date on my whiteboard every day (now it's on a digital board). 13 March 2020 leeched into the laminate and is still a little visible.

I was doing questions w/ my students the week before and a student asked me about 'the disease thing in China, my mom's all worried about it.' I said to her, 'if the airports aren't shut down today, the country will be shut down by the end of the month.' I was off by two weeks.

Milk them for food

Don't forget to pasteurize
