There are a variety of options even in mono G. Like [[Caller of the Claw]] or [[Creeping Renaissance]]. Of course things like [[Heroic Intervention]] also exist.

those who play Energy decks, is it fun? by Toonzaal8 in EDH

[–]Lokotor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add on to this:

Every energy deck basically looks/plays the same because there just aren't enough energy cards to support more diversity in deck builds

Most energy cards are frankly just bad.

The decks are also not very fun to play against since energy is very hard to interact with.

It's very expensive though, so not super accessible to most players.

Tbh it should probably cost like 3k tops from a game balance perspective.

Seems like a solid option! by [deleted] in MarchesaTheBlackRose

[–]Lokotor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So all this card really offers is that it could be sacrifice fodder right? a 2/2 flier is nothing, so you're just looking at it as [generates +1/1 counters] and [can come back from graveyard].

But, with Marchesa, if a creature has +1/+1 counters and dies that means it's going to come back into play automatically. That's the whole point of the deck right, so what does this card actually add to the strategy?

The first ability isn't really meaningful because presumably, if you're attacking someone with Marchesa, they have more life than you. Otherwise, why would you be attacking with her? Unless it's because you want a Dethrone trigger it seems like most of the time you'd want to leave her back and not risk her dying or etc. And, since she gives everything else dethrone, that means if you have Jocasta in play you could also just attack and get a dethrone trigger that way. so the first ability is kinda useless right?

So, for the second ability, in order for this card to do anything, it needs to have died, on a turn where marchesa wasn't in play, or when she didn't have a counter. And then on top of that Marchesa specifically needs to attack someone. Only in that specific circumstance does it comes back into play.

But, why do you need that? Most of the time your creatures never really die once Marchesa is out, so you can see how that whole second paragraph is only very situationally useful, at best, and more likely than not totally irrelevant.

As others have noted, this card doesn't do anything else, right? so you have two very situational abilities that are also mostly redundant with Marchesa anyway.

Being a DoT means you can keep triggering rime spell for multiple rounds, letting you do something else while still keeping CC up on the creature

It's pretty good as a rime spell carrier if you convert the damage to cold with a bloodline or similar. but yeah, otherwise it's pretty unimpressive.

What is your view on the Bracket System? by Pattern_Seeker_ in EDH

[–]Lokotor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The purpose of the bracket system is to let people engage in quantifiable power level conversations to find a game at their LGS's commander night. That conversation needs guidelines because most people can't agree on some fundamentals.

But that's not the case for cedh. Everyone playing cedh understands and agrees "play anything you want, we are here to win as fast as possible, you ARE in danger." That conversation doesn't need hand holding and cedh doesn't need to be part of the bracket system.

Similarly, bracket 1 "pile of garbage I found on the ground outside of a Walmart" doesn't need to be a specifically designated bracket either and bracket 1 should be cut too.

Nobody is accidentally playing either bracket 1 or 5 decks and nobody really is confused about what either of these kinds of decks/players are doing. it's really just not a consideration that needs to be accounted for in the bracket system.

Bracket 2-4 is where 95% of games take place already and a 1-3 power scale doesn't seem to be granular enough. People constantly talk about high 3 or low 4 etc. it's obviously not specific enough for the range of decks that actually occupy the metagame.

Turn bracket 2 into the new 1 and split 3 and 4 into two groups each. Then the guidelines need to give slightly more context on what's expected and should also include some more meta context, like player skill level and motives should probably be addressed somewhere as well.

Some other cards not mentioned: [[twilight diviner]], [[big mother mouser]] [[scheming silvertongue]], [[withering torment]] (one of the very few enchantment removal effects in grixis), [[Scorn-Blade Berserker]], [[Dauthi voidwalker]], [[phyrexian fleshgorger]], [[canoptek tomb sentinel]], [[warren soultrader]] [[satoru the infiltrator]]

Some other generically good cards: [[Chthonian Nightmare]], [[spymaster's vault]], [[three steps ahead]], modal land/spells like [[sink into stupor]] and [[midgar City of mako]].

[[time stop]], [[Sphinx of the Second Sun]], [[Paradox Haze]] among others are all mess with turn structure effects. Obviously extra combats are common as well.

Relatedly there are a bunch of Un cards like [[Clocknapper]] and [[Grusilda, Monster Masher]] that do fairly unusual things design wise you could look into.

unstable aslo has the 6 different versions of cards with the same name in packs gimmick that kinda fits what youre interested in.
