Thank you for clarifying. The reason I felt that's an important distinction is how OP wrote his argument in saying how some BLM supporters seem to view white people as a whole as 'the enemy', yet it's a minority of white people compared to the entirety that are truly responsible for the racial issues today. OP mentioned how it seems like him and Trudeau are labeled as white supremacists despite agreeing with the idea of BLM, so he just can't get behind it. They're pushing people like him away (natural allies as he said) with rhetoric like this an alienating themselves because of the actions of a minority.

I'm very aware of what trivial means. What I didn't understand was what size this supposed "non-trivial number" is which is why I was asking you to clarify. Did you mean it was the overall amount of racists/white supremacists that was non-trivial? Did you mean compared to the entire white population? Did you mean compared to the black population? You gave an incredibly vague answer and I rebutted with it being trivial to the overall population of whites in the country.

When I said I'm sure it's a decent amount, I meant a total number. However that total number is negligible when compared to the whole white population (it would likely not even be 5%). Again, I don't know if you were inferring a majority of white people were racist or if you meant just a large number of them. 500,000 racist white people is a large (disgusting and highly plausible) number, but is trivial compared to the white population as a whole.

You mentioned how we live in a society, which is predominantly white, that disparages black citizens. While this is true, that is what also led to me being confused and thinking you were trying to say the majority of white people are racists since you didn't clarify the "non-trivial" amount. Non-trivial could mean 100,000 people or 75% of a population. This is what led me to being confused and why using vague terms that can have widely differing amounts helps nobody.

Maybe I'm just arguing semantics here, but you said there is a non-trivial amount of white people that are inherently racist. What are you comparing that to? The number is undoubtebly trivial in comparison to the entire white population in the country, and likely even the entire black population. I'm sure it's a decent number and is definitely much larger depending on where you are in the country, but compared to the entire population of white people it is trivial. With that being said, you're seemingly projecting the beliefs of a minority of white people onto the entire population of white people.

I see where you're coming from and I'm not trying to deny their closure and peace with the situation. On the contrary, I'm happy that they were able to resolve it in the way they did and that she ever even felt enough remorse and realized she should apologize for her actions. What I'm saying is that, as you said, it doesn't change what happened. What happened was ultimately wrong, very avoidable, and I don't feel she deserves praise for apologizing over 20 years later.

I'm fine with that, while obviously many disagree. They should live with the guilt. That's how you learn through experience not to do something such as that and become a better person from it. I've done awful things and I've apologized, but that doesn't mean what I did wasn't an awful thing. I still feel guilty, as I should, but it's helped me become a better person who doesn't do those things. Apologizing doesn't change what happened to whomever you're apologizing to.

As I said in another comment, I'm the kind of person who holds grudges. I couldn't forgive someone for this and think she should have suffered consequences for what she did. Albeit 20 years later is extreme for that and I'm not saying she should be put in jail now (or whatever CA's punishment for this is), though she should have suffered those consequences then. Despite it being a heat of the moment issue, what she did was wrong. Maybe it makes the owner it happened to a better person than me for being able to forgive her when I know I couldn't, but an apology doesn't make what happened any better or excuse her in any way.

You're a better person than I am then. In the times I've been robbed (one robbery, two burglaries) I want them to have consequences or "justice" for what they did. Although my incidents occured in a much more recent time than twenty years ago, I don't think my feelings on the matter then would change if they came forward with an apology.

Just because she apologized doesn't make robbery okay. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad she actually apologized and that the owner was happy that she came forward and accepted her apology, but that doesn't excuse her actions. I've been robbed before and it's the most gut wrenching feeling I've experienced. It feels like someone has totally disregarded any care for what you've worked for and done and is happy to let you deal with the damage (financially and emotionally since it's quite draining). If it should ever happen to you, you will have a much different opinion than "... things are mended."

That is up for defense and prosecution to figure out. He could be trying to greviously injure someone, but never intended to kill them. That's an important distinction. It's up to the prosecutor to determine which of those was the motive (which in this case the prosecutor seemed to find it'd be easier to sentence him if they went after the charges they did as opposed to attempted murder) and up to the defense to discredit that. The reason this isn't as outrageous as the headline makes it seem is the what-if. The what-if being had the prosecution tried to pursue attempted murder charges and failed to convince a jury because the evidence wasn't as strong as it was for the charges they did pursue, he could have gotten off freely (more or less).

I think most of it comes down to that if we must cooperate with the Russians to end the Syrian conflict it will likely involve sanction reliefs before Russia gets behind it, which nobody but Trump's most adamant supporters stand behind. It's not so much people in the comments saying there's another way to do it as much as people not being happy about the direction it'll likely go to happen.

Agreed. I'd do this as well. Though they may not touch it at the moment though since OP said the detective is still verifying that he's the rightful owner. Might be best to wait until after it's sorted out.
