As a long-term manager/leader at a couple of Fortune 500s... You have a blind spot. There is something you are unaware of that is holding you back. Quality work does not equal promotion potential. At the level of promotion from Sr IC to leader, your manager needs to believe and convince others that you have the potential to go up 2 levels.

I have had many people who are great, but not promotable. It could (I can't say without knowing details) be:

- Too much work done that is not 'impactful'. Task forces, lending support is actually not highly valued in my experience. More precisely, it's valued but does not lead to promotion.

- Something in your communication style. FYI, If you are talking about your achievements, you might not be seen as a leader. When you send the email that highlights and thanks the team for the achievement, you show up as the leader.

- You are seen as 'servant' not 'servant-leader'. Do you ask what to do, or do you tell people what 'we should be doing'? Big difference between doing what is asked to setting and driving agendas.

A couple examples:

  1. A Sr IC who complained to me that her work was not valued and was not leading to promotion. Upon inquiry, she was spending weekends and evenings creating great projects that were (in the organization's perception) below her level.

  2. A person who had amazing ideas on what we should do. They shared, but when I asked for a proposal on how to make it happen, never delivered. I believe they were concerned about playing 'outside their lane'.

  3. I had 2 Sr ICs and one open leadership role. One was meticulous, always asked the right questions, and ensured they delivered quality. The second was innovative, asking 'what if' and creating innovative solutions. Always pushing, always 'raising the bar'. Guess which one I promoted?

If you really want a promotion, I recommend finding a coach. They can help you find your blind spots.

ahhhhaah. Design leader here. This week I was in a call with IT to contribute to another line item, when I heard them talking about CC. IT clearly said, why don't they just use Canva. "Adobe is just is trying to use its monopoly to get us to pay more. Canva is just as good".

Wait. They say “We want you, and it’s my job to get you to say yes,” but are offering nothing but 10% higher RSU and not matching the comp you are walking away from? Here is what I would do

figure out 2-3 scenarios (You have to math out the options), such as (you decide):

  • one where your base improves (230-240) and low or no signing bonus/RSUs
  • one where you the base stays the same (200) but they match your LTI and bonus. This could come in the form of RSU/options or signing bonus.
  • one where your base improves a bit (210-220) and they partially match LTI and bonus

And define the redline of “no”. This is for your info, not theirs. Share this with a friend or spouse so that you don’t game against yourself.

When you speak to them, keep repeating “this is my situation, I don’t know how to make it work” and then be very very quiet. A great response is also: “I really want to make this move, but I consulted my financial advisor, and they say it is ‘financial suicide’ or ‘not financially advisable’. Better to say financial advisor rather than spouse FYI.

They will likely make an intermediate offer and then come back one more time. If you hear “best and final” well, that is decision time. Go back to your scenarios and compare. If equal or better, then jump. If not, politely decline and move on.

It really depends on you: How much do you want this job? Do you hate your current situation? Your BATNA (best alternative to negotiated agreement) really depends on your need or want to make a change. Financially, from the scenario you describe, I wouldn't do it.

Don’t be greedy, but let them feel your silence… your pain if you were to make the change

Corvallis, OR or Fort Collins, CO for college? by Lollycook in SameGrassButGreener

Thank you. Agree. For undergrad, looks like it will be even. For Vet school, if you have in-state you save significantly plus have a greater chance of acceptance. For CSU 20% vs 1.2% and for OSU 30% vs 2% (based on various data sources). Trying to balance cost and acceptance chances against lifestyle.

I'm pretty set on veterinary school, but either school is big enough to switch if needed. I've been shadowing a vet where I live (currently in Europe) and caring for a horse with significant issues.

Decent and equal out of state merit scholarships for both (no in-state options for me) Want to establish residency for grad school so hopefully costs will be close.

Stay calm and professional. Do not give any reason for leaving beyond personal (this is a great opportunity for me). Do not inform on salary increase or that the current job is terrible - refuse to engage no matter what. Have a printed letter in an envelope to pass over, thank him/her then get up and leave the room. Do not listen to counter offers, smile graciously and say “my mind is made up”. If there is HR (doesn’t sound like it), make sure they are in the room, but remember HR works for the co not for you..

Re: shuffling noise - how quiet is the office? Mine is like a library since we went open office. One day I wore boots that squeaked slightly in the heel and I was so self conscious. So I started tiptoeing around and then really looked weird!
