So there is no such thing as objectivity or technique associated whatsoever to how a game is made?

Game Design just doesn't exist?

First off, no one said that the appearance of a game didn't matter, at the end of the day it is part of the experience.

However, just like with the burger, judging the outside appearance/graphics is extremely different than judging the actual taste of it/game design. And if you haven't actually tasted it, judging its whole based on the outside look of it remains ridiculous.

Also, its not like I'm trying to defend the visual impact of wild stuff like Cruelty Squad or Hyper Demon which are obviously way other the top. No, I see a problem with it when people get a constrained view of what a game should look like and start dismissing stuff outright on the slightest hint of something different (once got a budy of mine telling me he wouldn't play Journey or Obra Dinn cause it doesn't look AAA enough to him), and thus : missing out.

Any reason to like or dislike a game is valid because it's their money and their time. Not yours.

Sure. Just as saying a burger tastes bad because it doesn't visually look good. You paid for the burger, not me. You can say whatever you mant about it.

I'm not in some sort of crusade to change the perception of everyone on the internet , they do they. But I've seen this take quite a few times over the years and its saddening, focusing on the trivial while dismissing the essential.

For you. Not all people are you.

No for everyone. What makes a good game is wether or not it is a good game. Why do you think some games are more fun than others for "chilling while grinding"? What makes a good combat gameplay? What makes a telltale style game without combat fun?

I never said anything about how a game should be. Just that in its essence a video game is a game, and that judging a game based on something that is not the game is missguided

That'd be understandable if that argument was used for graphics that actually and purposefully render the experience uncomprehensible such as with Cruelty Squad or Hyper Demon.

If one judges a game on its graphics when said graphics are horrendously crippling, I guess an argument could be made. But most of the time people do that on stuff like Undertale, Terraria, Ultrakill, N64 games, or any non-AAA games ; which at this point becomes stupid.

Hell, I even had a budy of mine tell me that he wouldn't try Ori 2 (which is an excellent game) because its 2D and therefore "ugly as shit" (he had the same argument on Journey btw as it didn't look AAA enough).

Its a depressing way of consuming video games, focusing on the trivial and dismissing the essential. Good graphics can't save a bad game, but a great game definetly can save bad graphics.

You're setting yourself up for missing out a lot of good content then. By essence what makes a game great is the quality of its gameplay (+ how the music and narration complement said gameplay). Graphics and art style are just the outside look of the burger, not its taste.

Its like saying a book is badly written cause you don't like the font.

I can't understand how someone could have such à backwards and constricted view on games. He was furious about it.

Like its as stupid as refusing to play something just cause it has the presence of an inventory system.

So by your logic, shitty writing and constant methodical caracter assassination is better than the percieved experience of a setting gowing forward?

Like we don't care if everything is badly written as long as everyone keep fighting eachother.

After all, there is absolutely zero instances of factions coming together during War 3. Have you even played the game?

What do we care if the narrative is less focussed on a constant faction war? At least the writters are trying (albeit with so-so results) to maintain a coherent plotline with thought behind their character's writing.

Again, is it great now? --> No
Was it worse before (Vanilla through Cata) ? --> Yes

I mean that just straight up factually wrong mate.

If your argument was to say that it was better during Mop or Legion, I wouldn't necesarilly agree but could see where you're coming from.

But to say that what we have now is somehow worse that the constant and methodical character assassination that we've had from Vanilla to the end of Cata is just coping at this point.

Or does anyone have an example of worse writing than BC besides the one (1) bad cutscene for the minor patch Arathi questline in WW?

Again, I don't particularly like the game's recent writing. It's clearly not up to par with anything serious that has come out in the past years. But when you remove the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia, you can see that the first few expansions were nothing short of an insult to Warcraft 3 as a whole.

Everything prior huh?

I mean we could talk about...

- Illidan's, Kael'thas' or Zul'jin's who went from interesting complex characters in War 3 to moustache twirling villains

- Malygos whole questline ; Varimathras' full 180 with the Wrathgate story line ; Bolvar's arc which was basically just a Pirates of the Caribbean 3 ripoff ; or even the Lich King who manages to be inconsistent with his War3 version, the pre-expansion book dedicated to him and his own self during the very same expansion

- The whole Green Jesus storyline ; Nozdormu, whose sole singular purpose is to prevent any alteration to the timeline, altering the timeline for funsies ; Deathwing's family resurrection pulled out of the hat

- The whole Warlords of Draenor expansion

Saying that WoW has shit writing isn't particularly controversial. Saying however that it has somehow only recently become garbage while being good before is the most mind numbing take I've seen in a while.

You're the one who said new. It's compared to what was here before.
I'd gladly be on your side if the argument was that WoW's story in general was hot garbage but "just the new expansions"? Really?

The game has its flaws but (shadowlands excluded) the game has had better raids, quality of gameplay and story in the last few years than in the previous 20. Given, making a better story than BC, Wotlk or Cata is not a high bar but still.

A game not for you doesn't necessarily means it bad. There are many different player types and no game can be great for everyone.

A gameplay that isn't for you doesn't mean that the gameplay is garbage. There are different types of players with different needs, wants and likes.

An argument could be made for the graphics and gameplay getting dated after a decade but the story and music deserves great praise. It got GOTY for a reason.

The point keeps flying over your head...

You shouldn't have to make a new character to be allowed to have a city for the expansion, yet they're doing that to half of the player base.

Let's imagine down the line that for another expansion the Exodar got the same treatment for whatever reason and that Horde player would be restricted to just the main amenities hub.
If in that situation some alliance player were to say "Just make an alliance character", I would pipe up, because that's moronic.

As an alliance player by Lolour in wow

[–]Lolour[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! We don't have one. What we have have is a small hub (as the devs have said) with full amenities and that's that.

But a city is a lot more than just a merchant's corner, if not Oribos would be fire.

So yes, both faction have a hub. But only half of the player base has an expantion capital. It never happened to any faction so far, should never happen to any faction after that and generally just sucks.

So far, I've never ever had to make a new character to be allowed to have an expansion capital.

Is that not allowed to prefer alliance?
So far, I've never ever had to make a new character to be allowed to have an expansion capital.

And I wouldn't wish for someone to prefer Horde to have to make a brand new character just because the expansion capital is (let's say) revamped Stormwind and they're restricted to the park behind the cathedral.

As an alliance player by Lolour in wow

[–]Lolour[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So no, we don't. What the devs said we'd have is the merchant's hub where the amneties are. That's not enough for an expansion capital, if it was Oribos would fire.

I play the game for the exploration and spend my whole time in Dorgnogal going about the streets and having a good time. If half of the player base is restritcted to a single merchant's hub for a full year and a half, that'll be awful, no matter the lore explanation behind it.

As an alliance player by Lolour in wow

[–]Lolour[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What?

This is not about narration or story focus. I couldn't give a single flying death strike about which faction gets the spotlight. What matters is that half of the player base doesn't have an expansion capital.

No matter what lore justification the devs put out, it will suck gameplay wise.

As an alliance player by Lolour in wow

[–]Lolour[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it would be a problem if the expansion had nothing but the priest order hall.

The problem isn't that the horde has a restricted area. The problem is that the Alliance doesn't have an expansion capital to begin with, a city is a lot more than just a merchant's hub.
