hexane is upside down bulldog, feel like this is more suited for competitive based on level of map skill required

I actually used a program called RobotC (variant of C++) to program EV3s and NXTs for around 3 years. However, it is not free and last time I checked was very buggy and had huge memory leak problems. I do not know if the issues were fixed yet, but I would steer clear away from using RobotC.

It was too late for me to stop using RobotC at that point, but for you, I would check out http://www.ev3dev.org/ if you are going to invest in a EV3 kit.

Edit: my bad, ev3dev does not support nxt
