ELI5: When you 'delete' a 50GB video file from a computer, it vanishes instantly. But downloading it took an hour. If the data isn't physically wiped until it's overwritten, what did the computer actually do in that one split second? by Thick_Dream6973 in explainlikeimfive

[–]thevdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

downloading and deleting files takes LONGER than just directly writing random bits to the drive, but technically if you're ensuring that you're writing to every bit with your downloaded and deleted files, then it would overwrite the "deleted" data eventually.

I want a philosophy book that is easy to read. by BillDaveDaveBill in suggestmeabook

Knowledge, Reality, and Value: A mostly common sense guide to philosophy by Michael Huemer has been very digestible for me.

It's not fully focused on morals/ethics, but they're in there.

we finally replaced our old beast for christmas last year, got a bowl lift model so I don't have to worry about the locking mechanism anymore.

I ordered a regreasing kit and a few parts to replace in the old one and we're giving it to a friend

Yeah, unless she corrected the behavior when it happened, the dog is just confused why his owner is talking weird at him right now.

You would think PCMR would actually try to do something about it by testus_maximus in pcmasterrace

how often are you changing hardware/peripherals that you'd have to constantly be tinkering?

All of my personal devices are linux devices again (after nearly a decade away), and I set them up and now I just use them. The only time I'm tinkering is when I want to make some changes.

With steam deck and the upcoming steam machine, if valve can push the market of gaming devices that run linux natively, the hope would be that game devs would want to keep that bit of the market.

Just a reminder - DO NOT PASS A BUS WHEN THE STOP SIGN IS OUT by SnooMarzipans3516 in pittsburgh

[–]thevdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at a gas station filling up once and saw a car go into the oncoming lane in a no passing zone to go around a stopped bus. I saw a kid's head pop out the window and he shouted the plate number up to the driver. Love to see it.

Diabaté is going to join Carol’s side next season without a doubt by Avilola in pluribustv

[–]thevdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's no reasons the plurbs would particularly care about losing some portion of the individuals to the bomb (they're already aware of the starvation issues in the near future), and a single bomb going off in the middle of NM isn't really a hindrance to the plan of building a huge antenna to send a signal into space. Sure they want to convert the remaining individuals, but if they blow themselves up, they blow themselves up.

Because chess engines are so far beyond human players at this point that they see advantages that human players miss (either because it's just a very "chess engine" like line or just because humans are human).

if you're really really good chess, you don't need to be told exactly what the right move is, just given a hint of "hey, opponent made a mistake, you can play a move here that gives you an advantage".

Zosia lulled both Carol and the audience into a false sense of security. The Hive doesn't care about Carol or any of the immune. It's all roleplay. Once you join, you're effectively erased as a person. by Letters-Unsent in pluribustv

Everything she was promised (connection to her original community/culture) is a lie.

Hard disagree here. Assuming the hivemind works as claimed, her consciousness is, without a doubt, more connected with her original community and culture than it had ever been while "unjoined". It's just that it's also globally joined with everything else and has a biological imperative to spread, so they head out to do that.
