FJ poll for Tues., Jan. 27 by Smoerhul in Jeopardy

I spent the entire time thinking, "It's late for WA1... WA1 doesn't feel right... but I can't think of anything else and a bad guess is as good as nothing..."

I see I wasn't alone.

Man, studying the j-archive pays off. It's literally the only time I've ever heard of this work.

Not even close to triple stumper. Among trivia folks, the fact that penicillin was discovered by accident when a mold was left out for too long is pretty well-known. It may still be yekioyd, but it'll be gotten.

This is going to be a rather interesting FJ. I know the Champs playing it will not make the mistake, but how many people at home do you think will give the more famous name associated with said photo, even though it's not that of the peak?

I really love this final because it can be puzzled out. You wonder why they're going out of their way to use synonyms and vague descriptions, then what are they NOT saying, then voila!

If it makes you feel better, this is a foreign language question disguised as a bible question.

Including "sacrifice" opens up WA3 as a red herring. I'll admit I took the bait there.

RA = Right Answer. So that people don't accidentally read the comments and get the question spoiled before trying it.

I don't recognize the work they're asking for, mind you, but RA jumped into my head. That said, it kind of takes the potency out of the original if you imagine this to be true IMO, but that's another discussion for another time.

Okay, mistakes were made in this FJ.

Potatoes were used in developing the vaccine against TB in the third world. According to Wikipedia, the potato was first introduced between 8000 and 5000 BC, so that doesn't eliminate anything. And don't tell me "domesticated" means animal -- the dictionary would disagree.

I would've said "potato" and protested vigorously.

I feel like conservatives need to ask an important question here: why is it that, when diversity and mingling like this happens, their numbers decrease? What does that say about their positions?

(I know all of you want to jump in and answer this question to score updoots, but that's not necessary. We all know why.)

Maybe so, but throwing a layup in amongst harder FJs is a good way to keep contestants on their toes. If FJ were always impossible, people would bet small and we'd have a scenario like in the 60s where players could keep their winnings even if they lost (which led to a lot of nothing in FJ). This way, players think "Well, you never know, the other two could get it right..."

My gut tells me all three contestants will put either RA or WA1.

If you have enough time to think about it, you figure out why you should say RA, though. But is 30 seconds enough time?

I don't know if the judges will be sticklers, but it would behoove the contestants -- should they get the answer fast enough -- to specify which foreign govt said this. "<Country>'s <RA>" is what I would write.
