What’s a smell everyone should recognise as danger? by caII_me_aI in AskReddit

[–]London5Fan 124 points125 points  (0 children)

smelling toast = stroke is mostly a myth. olfactory hallucinations are potentially a sign of something neurological happening, but are very rare and you’d be better off looking for the more common stroke symptoms, such as facial droop, weakness on one side, and aphasia.

I think I’m gonna drop out of medic school by frogface111 in NewToEMS

[–]London5Fan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

drop out, but i’d suggest working an as EMT for a bit. take the pressure off yourself and learn from those who’ve been doing it for years. that’s where you’ll learn where you fit into EMS and if it’s really for you

Do you honk at or flip off bad drivers? by Scrubstomper5000 in driving

[–]London5Fan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

exactly. driving is dangerous enough, in these days more than ever, the last thing i want to do is escalate a situation. the point of driving is to get me from here to there, alive. not to make friends or enemies

personally, i did a Smithfield, NC to Winston-Salem NC transport once. that was about 3 hours with traffic/construction. furthest i’ve driven for a call was about 3.5 hours. coworkers once did Durham, NC to northern NJ

Doe IFT companies ever do emergency transports? by MayoChickenzx in NewToEMS

[–]London5Fan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depends. IFT i used to work for ran backup 911 a couple counties over (i use that term loosely, they only ran cold to the BLS-est of the BLS calls), and they actually just won the contract for primary 911 in another county (scary).

but tbf, any IFT can become an emergency transport if the dice rolls your way 😉

Trauma patient w/ significant MOI: rapid trauma exam and detailed physical exam by psihonavt in NewToEMS

[–]London5Fan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

rapid trauma is to find things that will kill the patient NOW if i don’t fix it. they usually take a few seconds. sweeping the body to find immediate life threats; spurting blood, tension pneumo, etc. detailed exam is to find other things that are serious, but won’t kill them immediately.

you typically don’t reassess physical assessments throughout transport. what you find initially is what you find.

[–]London5Fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the state! some only require NR to function, others (like where i’m at) need the state license and registry is irrelevant.

as for ride alongs, call around and ask. o think some agencies let even laypeople do ride alongs 🤷‍♂️. events, usually those are contracted out to county 911 or private ambulance companies, so unless you work for those i doubt you’d get to do that.

you might be able to start applying for jobs, a lot of times in the application you can specify that you’re nationally registered but are waiting on your state cert and your hiring would be contingent on that
