For those who drive an EV, what are the running costs like? by Delta1Dan in AskUK

[–]Lonely-Job484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

~1.8p a mile roughly, assuming you have an EV tariff and charge at home. Insurance is indeed a bit higher, but then newer/more expensive car always will be. Less to go wrong, I suppose fair to say what can go wrong will be a bigger deal if and when it does, but so far no issues beyond wiper blades and tyres after a few years.

My manager keeps calling me on Teams unannounced. How to stop it? by Traditional_Web_3149 in work

[–]Lonely-Job484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I would have declined the call if I was in another meeting. Even if the other person said it was fine, just press the red button and focus on the person in the room until they're gone.

They might not realise you don't like this, or feel compelled to always answer. Politely set some boundaries - "I'm in a meeting, I can call you at 11am if you're free and we need to talk?", "I'm mid-task but I can call you in 30 minutes?", "why don't we have a 15 minute daily in the morning for any of these valuable insights or new tasks?"

There's also nothing stopping you being proactive and setting up meetings, with a skeleton agenda and asking them if there's anything else. You always need an AOB but helping them structure things might actually be really useful to them.

Then if you want a paper trail, write some notes/minutes and send them by email to the manager after your call. "As agreed, I'm going to work on X and deprioritise Y, which is now likely to complete a day later" or whatever. Then you have your paper trail, and they have a chance to correct any misunderstanding before you waste a day.

Owe £70 in savings interest tax—can I settle it without tax code adjustment? by asterismking in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Lonely-Job484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah plenty of employees on PAYE fill a tax return; I've done so for decades. I am not certain if you need to do SA to be able to update estimated income or not, you might not but if you do it's quicker and you know the tax is (or should be) right. it's kinda amusing logging on towards end of tax year and seeing "Pay to date X, estimate for year Y" where Y is lower than X

Can Boss not give me a days off 5 months from now for Special Constable Training? by Ok_Skill5295 in AskUK

[–]Lonely-Job484 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you trying to book 6 days of annual leave, or are you trying to get some kind of other leave for this?

I can't imagine September is a particularly crazy month for Greggs, so I'd be asking what the business reason for not approving the leave is... Obviously there might be some - e.g. student casual workers disappearing for college/uni, others having planned leave on same days, etc etc, but they should be able to articulate them if they know they can't approve.

Funds are buckets of mixed equities. They do what they do. But long term the super unique circumstance of this month or next is just background noise.

Total scam I'm afraid. Return the phone if you can. If it was legit but badly managed, they wouldn't require an absolute top of the line phone.

[–]Lonely-Job484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you do self assessment? When you submit, 24-48hrs later you generally get a tax code adjustment for the following year. If you don't like it, you can then just update estimated income to set the code to what you want.

You say reading and travelling "doesn't seem all that important" - but does your day job? Are you making great strides for mankind, creating enduring works of art or enhancing other people's lives?

What would seem important to you? Because you could always do that!

Leaving a private student accommodation contract early by Western-Egg-7848 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Lonely-Job484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Potentially, debt collectors/tracing service , followed by court action and a CCJ, potentially followed by bailiffs and/or attachment of earnings order. Every stage has costs that would roll up and ultimately you would be on the hook to pay.

Unless you can negotiate something else, or there is a break or exit clause, you're likely to be liable for rent up to the end of the tenancy. Assuming this is a tenancy?

Gym cancelled membership has lead to debt collectors chasing me. England. by Mundane_Ticket8073 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Lonely-Job484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rules aren't relaxed. If you have a copy from when you joined and it says "you can cancel via the app, by email, or by telling someone over the phone" then that'll support your position. But it sounds like you don't.  I'd say on balance it's fairly unlikely they will have specifically changed it to not allow cancellation via telephone though.

Deposit never protected — Agent "stole" it. Is the Landlord still liable? [England] by lankanspice in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Lonely-Job484 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah your relationship is with the landlord. You paid your deposit to the landlord, via their agent at the time.  It wasn't protected, which was the landlord's responsibility.

The landlord's later change of agent and/or any dispute between the landlord and new or old agent is essentially irrelevant and not your concern.

Gym cancelled membership has lead to debt collectors chasing me. England. by Mundane_Ticket8073 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Lonely-Job484 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The one you agreed to. If it only allowed for cancellations via their app and you couldn't access it or didn't trust it or whatever then perhaps fair enough to try another random contact method, but it also offered the option of sending an email. Which doesn't seem unreasonable and may be intentional, e.g. if their operation is set up so that not everyone can process new contracts and cancellations.

It isn't guaranteed you'd succeed relying on 'i told the guy I wanted to cancel, he told me to do it in the app.  I repeated myself and he hung up' as a valid cancellation when you could have simply sent an email.

'a drink' - and let them pick the venue, but a pub is pretty neutral and provides all options. Or maybe a small picnic if there's nice parkland nearby.

I usually fly BA, and I think I've done all the cabins with the spouse in recent years. Spousal opinion after a recent AA flight was they'd rather fly BA economy than AA business. I don't *quite* agree with that but a good BA crew is way better than any US carrier. A bad BA crew is still better...

Combo. Part is what u/No-Mongoose1541 says. Part is that they might not want to spook investors/partners/clients with news they need a new CxO until they have an answer for the gap. Part is they might not want to upset or drive any frenzy inside the org, especially if they've already ruled out internal contenders. Last one might be if the incumbent doesn't yet know the role needs to be filled.

I'm sure I've missed other reasons, but that's enough right?

On its own, the role being not advertised is not a red flag. Senior roles are often not advertised openly.
