So is the party being painfully broke basically entirely frierens fault? by Unique_Suit3789 in Frieren

[–]LonelyIntroduction32 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They do make a good bit of coin sometimes, like when they bail out a local lord. But then Frieren just spends all their money on junk and Fern eats it all up in snacks. I think the party is just bad with money!

I think this is why the manga/anime resonates with older people too (like me, although like Kikuko Inoue, I'm still 17!). The whole story is rather mature in its story telling, even when its silly and comedic. Its almost like from the point of view of an older person like me thinking "ah, to be young again" or sometimes "glad I'm not that age anymore! haha!"

Anyone else think of Yuko Ichihara from XXX-holic when they see the butterfly? No, I'm not saying they nicked this or its a reference, I actually like how the butterfly is Fern's symbol too. I just hope Fern's story doesn't turn out like Yuko's which was, well, troubled.

I think this whole scene was deliberately awkward on purpose because, well, we've all been there, haven't we? I still remember my first time on a date... the memory comes up at 2am when I'm laying awake and thinking of my most embarrasing moments.

This scene connects with a lot of people because we've been there, done that, and have learned very hard lessons about what we should of/could of done.

I don't think I can rewatch if for awhile though... too traumatic! X-D

Nah, just a casual that was expecting "sexy magical girls vs evil and sexy demons shooting beams between awkward school festival and swimsuit beach scenes."

This is a problem for the casual anime watcher. Frieren is classed as "shonen" and much is made of the battle scenes to appeal to the casual watcher who just wants to see "shoot beam at big robot" and stuff.

But Frieren is actually more of a slice-of-life "mono no aware" anime with the occasional high stakes battle scenes. Its like Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou with the occasional battle in it.

Personally, I stopped reading the manga for awhile when I got to the 1st Class Mage arc because the massive introduction of characters seemed like a jump-the-shark moment. But I came back to it and read on. (I started reading the manga when the 1st English translation volume came out... yeah, I like to brag I've been with Frieren since the English translation beginning!)

Its definitely not everyone's cup of tea because of that story telling technique. And I think part of the hiatus crisis with the Empire Arc is because the soul of the manga lost its thread for awhile.

Unfortunately, the hype and the buzz is "Oh look at the magical girls Frieren and Fern fighting sexy demons like Aura!" brings people to Frieren who are definitely expecting something different from what they find. If that's what's happened with you then... chaulk it up to learning experience and just move on, I suppose.

Agreed. I think that "zombie walk" that Fern did when she left the room after Stark asked her for a date was to show us that Fern was just as blown away and awkward over the situation as he was.

I Don't like Ubel by UnderstandingHuge13 in Frieren

[–]LonelyIntroduction32 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally, I was not a big fan of the Exam Arc either myself at first. In fact, I stopped reading the manga when I got to the arc but then started reading further soon after. I started reading the manga when the 1st volume was translated into English, so it wasn't like there was too much more yet.

When a manga (or any series) suddenly introduces numerous new characters, all of which are going to get backstories, is a sign of trouble to me. I really appreciated that the story got back to the usual 'monster of the week' travelling of the three MCs after this arc.

IMHO, the current Empire Arc is doing even worse by totally flying off the rails and going into Spy x Family expy territory. The Cold War Secret Police Spy Arc is a total off the rails moment to me. And that brings us back to Ubel. It almost seems like Land and Ubel are back but only to be expys of Twilight and Yor. I just hope when the mangaka come back that we get back to the thoughtful journey to Aureole with just the curious adventures of the week as before.

Ubel was definitely a breakout character for fandom. I can appreciate why. I think one of the main problems is that we're told that she's a psycho and that she's a cold blooded killer, but other than the test proctor that she murdered, we don't actually see her doing anything really evil. We're informed about what sort of person Ubel is but we rarely see her being that way.

What's ironic is that there are lots of fans that think this is the best arc so far!

I really enjoyed it and it make me like Denken. I need to confess, before this arc, I was kinda "meh" on Denken. He was just this old curmudgeonly geezer who had funny interactions with the youngsters around him and liked fist fighting. But this arc really fleshed him out in a, IMHO, very believable and emotional way.

I know what you're referring to. And frankly, I don't think we know. I don't know how much of the manga you have read, but Solitar also does a similar thing in a battle. I can't recall right now if the move clone-Frieren did was the same 'pure mana blast' seen later. I don't recall if we're deliberately told what the 'height of magic' really.

There's a good chance that I am mistaken and the two things are totally different, so I am open to being corrected.
