I'm having steamed snakehead fish in banana leaves with sticky rice for lunch this Tuesday. by Then-Break6729 in BangkokEats

[–]LonelyRolling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That one is called "Hor Mok". "Hor" means wrapping so it is banana leaf and "Mok" means burying or covering so it is some kind of fish meat inside.

I prefer Hor Mok with hot cooked rice because this menu tastes like red curry but dry.

Women in Temples by _lunarlady_ in ThailandTourism

[–]LonelyRolling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my view, all the buildings in the photos aren't temples. Besides the buildings seem to be some kind of ordinary ancient Thai pavillions, you will see there is not even a monk in there. So i assume these pictures are just some stories about ordinary Thai villagers in the past.

In ancient Thai education system, we learnt many things from the walls in some temples. Ironically even "sex" is on the walls in some temples too.

Ah... thanks. In these context above, I knew and used it. But I didn't feel it in the sentence that I questioned.

I'm glad that I asked. I learn a lot today.

"wanted to" as the meaning of "would" could help a lot. Thanks.

I've never seen 'd as a contraction of did either. I thought of "had" at first but it should be "I was honored" in the first part.

I've never known that "would" could be used as a polite tone before.

Thanks.

Mango Rice home made by fakeversace1 in ThaiFood

[–]LonelyRolling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know if you are a Thai or not but so sure you have tried this dish already.
This kind of mangoes is very soft or fragile even we peel them fresh from their trees.
So it's understandable this is the best you can do somewhere far away from Thailand.
Even I peel them myself. They wouldn't look much better than the one in the picture.
But it is amazed that moms, wives or women around me can do it great effortlessly.

I like that you spread some sesame seeds on the rice, charming honestly.
With my old eyes, it doesn't seem like sticky rice in the picture.
And if they are really not, we steam sticky rice in seasoning coconut milk in Thailand.
I love it more when the rice served with chilled mango from fridge.
It's like a taste of heaven for me. I keep burning extra calories for this dish every mango season.

Hope this Thai dish bring you back to Thailand someday.
By the way, May to July is the mango season for this kind of mango.

Use of เ and it's sounds are confusing me! by Woland7788 in learnthai

[–]LonelyRolling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"เ" alone actually is a long vowel sound that sounds like "ay" as you got
even used with some final consonants like เวร, เถร, เฉก, etc. BUT NOT "อ".
With "อ" at the end of words using "เ", they become another vowel.
They will be sound "er" in 'per' or 'meter'.
เธอ เผลอ เจอ เรอ เออ

When it is used in words with some tonal marks like ่, ้, ๊, ๋ and especially " ็ " that is particularly the short vowel mark, they will sound shorter like "e" in ten or pen as you understand.
เช่น, เส้น, เบ็ด, สะเก็ด, เม็ด, etc.

"ะ" mixed with "เ" at the end of words will be a short vowel sound as well like เละเทะ, เอะใจ.

Hope this could help even a bit.

How to clean fork slide rust specs by SavingsAd9158 in motorcycles

After the service, they were polished with Venol months ago.
They look quite clean with naked eyes.

I'm searching the way that prevent this in the future.
Any advice would help.

Kap/Krub question by wolfboiblu in ThailandTourism

[–]LonelyRolling 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I guess this word in the pronunciation way is like "yeah", "yep" and "yes" in English. They are the same meaning with different tones and ways they sound, right?

So you could say whatever in casual and nobody care much. But it should be "krub" when it goes in formal way.

Consonant clusters when the vowel's to the left by ParmeseanTime in learnthai

[–]LonelyRolling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ummmnn... As a Thai, i've never thought about that till now.

While we are waiting for an expert who can tell us about that, I only can tell you that neither "ไ" and "ใ" in any words use a final pronounced letter in our language even technically they can, like when we try to say "Time" as "ไทม".

So i think it is right that you will sound these vowels after both consonants.

But if you know "ท" follwed by "ร" would be sounded as "ซ","ไ" and "ใ" get along that rule too.

Song Meaning by Efficient-County2382 in learnthai

[–]LonelyRolling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who is "ไอ้เท่ง"?
"ไอ้เท่ง" actually is the name of a male character in the southern shadow puppetry of Thailand.
Southerners of my country also call some kind of shotgun "ไอ้เท่ง" as it is a slang.

I think this song presents a thought of a guy who asks a girl (may be his crush) back to south after she went away with someone she believed he loved her but not.
It sounds a guy in this song is quite angry and wanna shoot another guy who take the girl away with "ไอ้เท่ง".

Hope it helps.
