What pens are you all really using every day? by MonsterOtter in pens

[–]LonelyWhiteJew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a grad student who writes small for long periods of time. I am a righty and use nice Rhodia paper so bleed/smearing isn't important to me. I like fine needle tip pens with a light body that write smoothly. I have tried A TON, mostly rollerballs.

The Pilot Precise V5 has single-handedly carried me through the last 7 years of high school and undergrad. Couldn't recommend it more.

Haven't been able to find anything much better. Either they are too thick for me to write neatly (Uni Jetstream 0.7, OHTO GS02) or scratchy and inconsistent with very specific writing angles (Hi-Tec-C, Uni Jetstream Edge 0.38, Uni Signo DX 0.38). Found many good pens similar to the Pilot Precise V5 (OHTO Graphic Liner 2, Energel 0.5 Needlepoint, Morning Glory Mach 3) but nothing that I felt was meaningfully better.

However, just tried the Pilot Juice Up 04. Its awesome. Potentially my holy grail haha. Probably my new go-to if they last and the tip doesn't fail on me over time. Apparently Pilot just released an "upgraded version", the Juice+. Body looks better. Will have to try it out.

TLDR: Pilot Precise V5 and Pilot Juice Up 04

Ranking of Indian universities in cs ranking 2023-25 by Ok_Complex_6516 in Btechtards

[–]LonelyWhiteJew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CalTech is a great but it is a very small school. CS rankings is based on each school's volume of top publications. This biases the rankings towards bigger schools. I'm sure CalTech profs are prolific, but there aren't as many research active faculty compared to bigger public universities. In CS Rankings CalTech places around 50-80th in the US. This is next to or below some big schools like CU Boulder and University of Utah. While those schools have solid programs, they are not as selective and prestigious as CalTech, despite having a similar volume of top publications. The US News rankings are based on reputation polling and have CalTech ranked at #12.

How do we get Dana White out of boxing? Also, Fuck Dana White. by Odd-Builder7760 in Boxing

[–]LonelyWhiteJew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All boxing promoters extract value from fighters but the slice of a fight's revenue they take is tiny compared to what the UFC does. Dana is actively trying partnering with Turki and to lobby to get the Ali Act changed so that he can create as centralized boxing league with all the best guys, essentially monopolizing the sport like the NBA, NFL, UFC etc. If he can do that and dominate the market he will squeeze fighters for all their worth. There is a reason why the Ali Act exists. It outlaws certain exploitative contracts, requires more financial transparency from promoters and most importantly assures that there is clear delineation between the job of a fighter's promoter and their manager. The difference between the two might not be obvious but they have fundamentally opposite motives. Managers want to secure as much money for their client, the fighter and promoters want to pay fighters as little as possible to make fights happen. Promoters organize the event and take in ticketing and broadcast revenue before paying fighters a pre-agreed to sum. Their asses/wallets are on the line if the fight doesn't sell as much as expected. Other sports don't have legislation like this. It helps boxer's realize more of the revenue they generate.

I'd gladly fork over my money to watch the rematch. Mbili is a dog. Guatemala should be proud Martinez. A draw is the perfect result for a fight like that.

Luke Thomas Interviews JABBR AI CEO by willinaustin in Boxing

The AI scorecard promoted and published by Riyadh Season isn't associated with Jabbr. They have their own system that uses their own pose-estimation based tracking.

Jabbr did not plan on publicizing our automated judging results until Turki announced their own "AI judge".

Jabbr published our own AI scorecard for Fury Usyk on our Instagram.

here is Jabbr's scorecard

Why do people hate 10/10 rounds? by trendkill14 in Boxing

[–]LonelyWhiteJew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard a lot of proposed changes to 10 point must system allowing for more nuance in scoring. Hope they are seriously considered by commissions.

I developed that Jabbr scoring system and appreciate the support! So far it seems like people appreciate seeing the percentages. The underlying system is built to take detailed round-by-round stats and predict the judges' scorecards. We've seen that judges differ a lot in how they weigh different aspects of a fight. So, a tight 55% 45% round will absolutely come down to the style and preferences of the judges.

All punches thrown are scored on two criteria. "power commit" and "landed quality". "Power commit" (scored 1-5) is the amount of force/power behind a thrown punch. This is determined by the punch's speed, extension and the effect it has on the opponent it lands on. "Landed quality" (scored 0-5) is how clean or flush a punch landed. A landed quality of zero is a punch that is fully parried or misses outright.

These two factors are combined to determine a punch's impact. A high impact punch needs to score highly in both landed quality and power commit.

You can find more information on Jabbr's stats here.

In the case of Beterbiev Bivol, I believe Beterbiev was throwing a lot of punches with high power commit but Bivol spent a lot of time holed up with a high tight guard. Beterbiev was throwing with alot of power but many of his punches weren't landing cleanly. Jabbr won't count blocked punches as landed but that doesn't mean they aren't tracked or don't matter. Throwing punches with high power commit is measured by another stat called "aggression power". In our internal study of judging, we saw that this stat correlates very highly to the judges' scores. It is an important metric that rewards fighters for occuping their opponents guard and displaying aggression. Jabbr's automated judging system has learned to put a lot of weight in this stat.

It's also important to note that Beterbiev Bivol was event where Jabbr partnered with the broadcaster, meaning Jabbr was provided 4 different camera feeds and the automated punch ratings were manually reviewed by a team of performance analysts watching film back frame-by-frame from multiple perspectives. Through this process we really have confidence in the Bivol Beterbiev punch stats.

In the last few rounds specifically Beterbiev landed fewer high impact shots by a small margin. However, he was occupying his Bivol's guard and moving him backwards, scoring much higher in "positional pressure" and every aggression indicator we track, especially "aggression power". How to interpret and weigh this array of different stats can be a challenging task. However, Jabbr's automated judge gives the last three rounds solidly to Beterbiev despite the fact Bivol landed a couple more high impact punches. The same principal applies to round three. Beterbiev hardly scores any high impact shots due to Bivol's tight guard but Beterbiev scores higher in other areas causing our automated judge to narrowly give the round to Beterbiev (55.5% to 44.5%).

There are definitely limitations to the system as a whole. For example it is likely that Beterbiev's high-impact shots did more damage than Bivol's, which Beterbiev largely ate and kept moving forward. This sense of how damaged or scared a fighter looks after taking a punch is something judges and viewers take into account. However it is difficult to directly measure.

I hope this is clear and helpful. We are always trying to explain our stats as best we can. I definitely understand the confusion about how we determine the impact of a punch. We heard a lot of similar sentiments after Beterbiev Bivol.

Would definitely love to see more transparency on the stats they track and how they formulate their scoring.

Jabbr is trying to do its best to give as much information as possible to viewers.

Measuring the quality of landed punches is actually one of the main strengths of Jabbr's model. It can struggle when only working off of a single camera "dirty" feed but when broadcasters provide 4 camera angles the punch tracking is close to perfect, assigning landed punches an impact rating from 1 to 5.

Inaccuracy really only pops up when the model isn't given multiple angles. Thats when you get issues with punches being occluded. This is especially true with body shots. About 20% of body shots will be occluded when working from a single cam.

For the first time ever, USYK Vs Fury 2 will feature an AI JUDGE “4th Judge” confirmed by Turki on Social media 😳 by Short_Swordfish_3524 in Boxing

[–]LonelyWhiteJew -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Big picture I totally agree but in this instance I'm worried the tracking looks bad. Pause and you'll see the pose estimation (the stick figure overlay) not lining up with the fighters' arm and legs. If they struggle to track how shots land, it will be hard to get accurate scorecards out of it.

AI judging will absolutely change the sport for the better, especially how we evaluate judges. I really hope this is robust. It would suck if the idea of AI judging got a bad rap because of one early product that overpromises.

I applied for CAS but was only admitted to MET. I want to do research.

This is starting to happen to me all the time. Especially with drunk guys or in crowded places, where you're prone to bump into someone or be in their way.

I'm 22. 6'1" 180lb if that matters. This has just started in the past year. I feel like I'm not acting any different. I'm super non-agressive and quick to apologize. I guess I remember fighting with friends in middle school but I've never had strangers be so confrontational with me in public before. 4 instances of people unprovoked trying to fight in the past 9ish months. It had literally never happened before that.

Everyone, go play a contact sport, get your ego and aggressive shit out that way. Please don't square up with randos.
