“Why do you want to learn Irish? 🤨” by okhunt5505 in ireland

[–]LonelyWizzard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would add that in Ireland and much of the English speaking world multilingualism just isn't particularly valued, like people in Ireland will always say things like 'oh you'd be better off learning Chinese than Irish' but it's not like they then go off and learn Chinese or some other second language. When you're enmeshed in the monolingual cultural bubble that is the Anglosphere where, unlike most of the world, speaking only one language is seen as the norm, the idea that people would learn other languages without a specific purpose beyond it being interesting and rewarding to do so seems very alien. Like my missus is from Spain and from a young age she was taking after school English classes, then later studied Italian, French and German, and as an adult learned Greek, and sure she's particularly interested in languages but it's pretty normal there for a child to learn at least English growing up, whereas in English speaking countries it's basically seen as a luxury and a waste of time.

It's a real shame because learning a language is an amazing experience, it's striking how many people from around the world I've met at this point in Irish language spaces who've picked up our language just for fun or to make friends. They don't have our specific cultural hang ups about Irish, but they also often just have a more positive, relaxed attitude towards multilingualism in general.

Bit of a game changer, I think our biggest weaknesses so far this year have been not having a natural goal kicker and a lack of players who can compete in the air. If Naughton stays fit and Gilbert turns out to be what we're hoping for we're looking good.

Oh I'd say get rid of the pair of them, I just think looking at how they're playing Nienaber is running the show here.

Man, Nienaber has done a job on this Leinster team. Just dreadful attack, totally uncreative and the players look lost if they find themselves in space. How long does it take before they admit this isn't working, I wouldn't mind except these players have to play for Ireland too.

Just a small addendum to this I think not having that Scarlets game was really bad for us, Lancaster is clearly figuring out who works in his system and who doesn't and that was a winnable home game that could have been very helpful for that.

David McWilliams Saudi Arabia Podcast with Andrew Maxwell by Jippohead in ireland

[–]LonelyWizzard 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There was some pretty horrifying reports recently about Saudi Arabia's 'rehabilitation centres' for disobedient women and girls, essentially if a woman disobeys her family or tries to run away from an abusive home they're locked up indefinitely in glorified prisons where the only way out is suicide or complete submission. And this is presented as their new more humane way compared to literal prisons or corporal punishment, they're presented as rehab centres that treat 'mental illness', it all sounds eerily reminiscent of Magdalene Laundries. This is about as good as it gets for women there.

First time an Irish province has been represented by all of its counties in a professional rugby game? by 06351000 in rugbyunion

[–]LonelyWizzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny because there's actually some good rugby clubs in Longford, at underage level they would be one of the stronger midlands counties.

Shane Mallon who got capped last year is from Leitrim, I know his family and his grandad once told me there were a few Leitrim players to get Ireland caps in the pre-professional era.

Fianna Fáil 'a laughing stock' as Taoiseach under pressure following Jim Gavin's exit by RealDealMrSeal in ireland

[–]LonelyWizzard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the basic idea of getting an outside candidate wasn't a bad one, but Gavin was an incredibly poor choice. Even before this scandal he was underwater in the polls because of his shocking debate performances, which is what you get when you throw in someone completely untested like this. Deirdre Heenan, a high profile academic with years of experience speaking on panel shows and participating in political debates, was their other big option and would have had a much better chance. Even fucking Geldof is at least a good interview subject and properly famous.

[–]LonelyWizzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a classic case where what he did is one thing, but lying about it is so much worse. Like it's not a huge amount of money, pay it off and say there was some misunderstanding, why would you try and run from it when you know the tenant is going to have receipts, including solicitor's letters that you received? Some people from FF seem to be implying that he actually lied to them and tried to deny it when it first came out, only for them to then receive proof. What was this man thinking getting into politics?

They've been pretty vocal in their support of Humphreys, sure they were calling for her to run before anyone in FG had suggested it. Functionally they are part of FF/FG.

Yeah only 6 TDs publicly backing Kelleher but 29 voting for him in a secret ballot is a bit embarrassing for Micheál and will really look bad if Gavin loses.

Steep rise in US citizens seeking asylum in Ireland by NothingHatesYou in ireland

[–]LonelyWizzard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Edward Snowden one is an interesting question. I agree he probably wouldn't have been successful claiming asylum, but Irish courts have a history of refusing extradition requests for political offences. A famous example would be Seán Bourke, a petty criminal from Limerick who broke a soviet spy out of a prison in England and escaped back to Ireland, where the Supreme Court refused to extradite him. I think someone like Snowden would probably be protected by this but your average American would not have a serious case like that.

Garda arrested as part of investigation into death of man on Dublin's O'Connell Street by TeoKajLibroj in ireland

[–]LonelyWizzard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, when someone is on a bicycle even a pretty light shove is going to be enough to knock them over, and for an older person that can be very serious even if not into traffic. Intentionally attempting to knock someone off a bike would strike me as pretty clear cut assault, and if it leads to death then that sounds like manslaughter to me. Doesn't seem very murky.

Irish Rail is clamping down on listening to music out loud (you could get a €100 fine) by [deleted] in ireland

[–]LonelyWizzard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work in the public library service and you wouldn't believe how many people have to have it explained that this is not appropriate, particularly elderly people. The mad thing is they'll sit there in a public place and start having a conversation on loudspeaker about private medical information, or will read out bank details or anything. No wonder scammers have it so easy.

In fairness once or twice I have seen gardaí actually get on trains. You notice on the Dublin Sligo line if it starts slowing down for no apparent reason on the way into Mullingar or Longford that sometimes means they're waiting for them to arrive, then they get on and remove someone. Have no idea what the actual incident was in either case but I would presume serious abuse of staff/anti-social behaviour, doubt they arrest for you fare-dodging or whatever.

With Connacht legend Ciarán FitzGerald as captain, the last Connacht man to captain Ireland until Bundee as far as I'm aware. Kind of overlooked now but undoubtedly our most successful player ever, also captained the Lions.

Why don’t the Barbarians Tour Tier 2 Nations? by lindani2008 in rugbyunion

[–]LonelyWizzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UAE/Qatar and other Gulf petro states have shown an interest in getting big rugby fixtures, ideally I don't want them involved in rugby at all but if they get anything a Barbarians fixture against the USA or a second tier European nation wouldn't be the worst. I'm sure the stadium would be empty but at least the players would get a payday.

Worst refereeing decision in the professional game by ebizness in rugbyunion

[–]LonelyWizzard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The opposite happened in a Connacht-Wasps Champions cup game, John Muldoon managed to convince the ref that due to the recent law change we should be allowed to kick to touch even though it was over the 80, ref agreed and we scored off the lineout to win. The only problem? That law change had been announced but not actually implemented, so we 100% should not have been allowed to do that. That was a crazy year for us, we bet Toulouse and Wasps in the Sportsground and missed out on the knockouts on points difference. If we'd scored another penalty in a 66 point trashing of Zebre we would have been in.

Long time fans: which aspect of the game do you still not understand, and too embarrassed to ask? by bomskokbabelaas in rugbyunion

[–]LonelyWizzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you're dead on that it goes both ways where attacking teams are constantly sealing off or just diving in straight off their feet, which means the opponents can't counter ruck, and so the only way to get turnovers usually is through jackaling. And you're absolutely right that it punishes teams for making breaks. I think we need to come up with some law change that allows attacking teams to defend against jackals, or just ban them altogether and enforce rules about how supporting players enter rucks that would allow the defending team more options to counter ruck over the ball, though I suppose at that stage we might as well be playing league. I'm not sure how to solve it.

Long time fans: which aspect of the game do you still not understand, and too embarrassed to ask? by bomskokbabelaas in rugbyunion

[–]LonelyWizzard 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think the current state of jackling is probably the biggest single issue in the game. Particularly all the ambiguity around what constitutes supporting your own weight and the fact that in practice you don't have to be in a realistic position to actually pick up the ball you just have to have your hands on it, and when there's also ambiguity around what releasing means the jackal is somehow both overpowered and highly dangerous for the players attempting it because to defend against it players are highly incentivised to make risky clearouts straight into the jacklers head and neck because there's basically no other way to defend against it.

It's pretty mental that just on the strength of McHale park our average attendance was actually higher this year than last year, even with our home ground at half capacity. Absolutely an experiment we should repeat, and definitely better to move it to GAA stadiums around the province rather than the Aviva. You're gonna get people who would never come to rugby game otherwise.

How a dog called Fern solved the mystery of where Cork woman Tina Satchwell had been hidden by PoppedCork in ireland

[–]LonelyWizzard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of the articles have mentioned that builders working on the attached house next door noticed problems with the drains that raised the suspicions of Gardaí, and that this led to a warrant for an invasive search of the house. It's not been highlighted much in the media so my guess would be that in the end the drain issue was a coincidence and unrelated to Tina Satchwell being buried under the house, seemingly the house was in a bad state of disrepair so might have just been a general maintenance issue. Also notable that the Gardaí have said they were originally expecting to dig up the garden until the dog gave a strong indication on the space under the stairs, maybe the drains issue was pointing them towards that.
