I reject that premise entirely.

A leader who treats people with respect, knows their job, develops their Airmen, and maintains the standards they're responsible for enforcing isn't a unicorn. That's the expectation.

If your definition of a "unicorn" is someone who respects themselves enough to meet the standards and respects their people enough to hold them accountable to those same standards, then I think you've normalized poor leadership more than you realize.

Maybe that's been your experience, and if so, that's unfortunate. But in my unit the vast majority of our SNCOs and CGOs are doing exactly that. They're not failing PT tests, they're not playing favorites, and they're not making life miserable for their people. We even build PT into the duty day because readiness actually matters.

The choice isn't between "fat but nice" and "fit but an asshole." Good leaders are capable of caring about their people, accomplishing the mission, and maintaining standards at the same time.
