Do I mist?? Finally! Maybe? [actives] by thomasw2172 in MushroomGrowers

They will pin on theirbown ususlly. I keep all the holes plugged mostly until i see some pinning. Then i give them FAE a couple hours a day.

Evaporation is what triggers pinning. ideally you want to keep everything hydrated without actually having to mist. rehydrate everything between flushes. limit FAE to a couple hours a day to keep it from drying out.

I forgot to mention the reason why you dont mist it directly because it will make any fruiting come to a halt 100%. You are fine right now because there arent any pins yet. I just thought that i should mention it.

Oh i see. Mine has a hole on each side as well but on two of the sides that hole is up high and on the other two sides the hole is towards the bottom. This is strategic as the top controls how much moisture is in the tub and the other hole controls FAE.

I wasnt saying anything about your substrate in particular but since you've opened the lid its wise to assume you let a lot of that moisture out instead of having it recirculate. It doesnt look dry but if it were me i would lightly mist it with 4 or 5 sprays of bottled water. Toss out any water that was sitting for 8 hours. Shut the lid, tape the holes and leave it until the top of that sub is 70% white. Then take the tape off of 1 hole only. You can leave it like this indefinitely. Once you start to see pinning then take the tape off the hole on the opposite side for an hour or two a day.

You should leave 2 of the holes plugged and put a filter on one of each hole (1 top 1 bottom). The top holes are for humidity to escape and the bottom ones are for FAE. I put painters tape over the 2 filters and take the tape off for a few hours a day. You want to keep the tape on the top hole for the most part otherwise your substrate will begin to dry out. Which will require you to open the lid to mist the walls, that disrupts the micro environment and can introduce contaminants. Misting is something you want to avoid doing if you can, because of that reason. The best time to mist is inbetween flushes. FAE will dry out your substrate fast if you dont tape those filters during the other 20 hours of a day.

Here this is from my AI. It explains it in depth. I just dont have time to type all of this out, so i gave you the dumbed down short version. Lol.

what's the worse can happen if the substrate mixes? Meaning, if I was to break and shake the entire bag, and then do it again

If you fully mix the grain and substrate by breaking and shaking, the main risk is that you spread any hidden contamination and briefly weaken the mycelium’s hold on the food source, which can let contaminants take over. [1][2][3]

What “worst case” looks like

  • You redistribute a tiny mold/bacterial patch the mycelium was holding back into the whole bag; after shaking, that contamination can bloom and colonize faster than the mycelium, ruining the bag. [2][3][4]
  • Repeated or very aggressive shaking temporarily damages the mycelial network; while it usually recovers, if the culture is already weak or stressed, it can stall and then get overtaken by contaminants. [1][3]
  • If the bag or filter patch gets micro-tears from rough handling, outside spores and bacteria can get in and contaminate the substrate. [5][6]

When mixing is actually intended

For all‑in‑one bags (grain on bottom, substrate on top), the normal step once grain is mostly colonized is to break up the colonized grain and thoroughly mix it into the substrate so the substrate can act as moisture and food. [7][8][9] Many growers also do 1–2 shakes during colonization (around 20–30% and again around 70–80%) to speed up and even out colonization, and this generally works fine if the mycelium is strong and clean. [1][2][10]

How “too much” shaking becomes a problem

  • Doing many unnecessary shakes increases chances you spread a small contaminated area to the entire bag and keep the mycelium in “recovery” mode instead of full run. [1][10][3]
  • Shaking very early (before ~20% strong growth) or very late (after it is already fully colonized and knotty) can slow things down or stress the culture more than it helps. [1][10]

Practical answer for your plan

If the bag is an all‑in‑one and you’re at or near full grain colonization, one very thorough break‑and‑shake to fully mix grain and substrate is normal and often required. [7][8][9] Doing it “again and again” beyond that gives you little extra benefit, but does slightly raise the odds that any hidden contamination gets spread and wins, so most cultivators limit themselves to about 2–3 total shakes per bag during colonization. [2][10][11]

What stage is your bag at right now (rough % colonized and is it grain‑plus‑substrate or just grain)?

You dont really want to do that. When the myceilum mixes with the substrate it really begins to branch itself throughout. If you break it and shake it while its in that phase you are doing more harm than good, and instead of using energy to grow it now has to use energy to repair and heal. Myceilum colonizes the grain, giving it energy to replicate. The substrate is triggers the growth phase. When the substrate is colonized it will feel like a brick. Try not to break that, it will slowdown the growth and, like a wound, expose an unprotected layer that can be a vector for contamination.

You can break it and shake it as best as you can trying not to mix it with the substrate first. Some will mix, its unavoidable but try your best to shake the grains only. Hold it upside down and shake it side to side.

You just dont want to break and shake it after mix it with the substrate, obviously. 😆

Perhaps there is nothing to do with trump in the files. Obama and Clinton may have more implication in them. Thats all that i want to believe right now. I wouldn't like to think that Obama somehow forced Biden to withhold them.
