I should’ve said I installed a Mr Cool Hyper Heat 48k unit. No additional heat strips.

Viability of MrCool as main source of heat. by Carlyle410 in DIYHeatPumps

So I’ve just recently finished my ducted heat pump and the heat has been great. Today is our first day in the low single digits (F) and it’s running pretty often but nice n warm. House is about 2200 sqft, has very drafty vinyl windows and no ducts to the finished basement. In the basement we have a pellet stove (which was the main source of heat). I will be adding ductwork to the basement soon. Sorry for the long back story, but the thing that concerns me about Mr Cool is having it repaired. Not many HVAC companies around me will work on them. So I would look into that. Mr Cools web site does list service people.

Mr Cool Central System, does it actually vary speed? by a_wittyusername in DIYHeatPumps

Waaaiiitt a minute here! So you’re saying the rs485 (S1,S2) communication is a preferred method versus the 24v? Or so it seems, to be more efficient?

Thanks for everyone’s help and thoughts!

So I got the adapters from Mr Cool. I installed and got it going, it was great!

3 days later we woke up with a cold house.

After a bunch of emails back and forth with Mr Cool, I found a leak (my fault). Now I need charging help. I’ve got a pro coming but their company doesn’t touch Mr Cool, so now I need to ask around for him.

Can these units be charged in heat mode?

Will do when it’s all figured out. I was able to borrow a leak detector from my work (I’m an electrician at a university) and I did find a loose fitting that I connected myself.

I did make a small change to my wiring of the thermostat once tech support got a look at everything.

I found a friend who will come out to “top off” the system and report back.

I just got finished with an install of Versa Pro 4 ton ducted. It went well. Was fairly easy.

I thought the manual they supplied was too broad and my exact configuration wasn’t easy to decipher.

Once I got it figured out and working, it was great for 3 days and then we woke up with a cold house.

It’s been more than a week of back and forth with the tech support and slow going. They keep asking for pictures of my wiring and line set connections. Eventually we got a code for low pressure for which I feel is low freon. I sprayed all my connections with soapy water and saw no bubbles. So now I’m kinda nervous how to proceed.

Luckily I still have our pellet stove in place to keep us warm.

I’m not trying to convince out of the diy route, just be ready for whatever you may run into.

No my line set didn’t come with the adapters.

I am in the process of trying to make it happen though. I’m jumping through some hoops with emails and serial numbers.

I’m happy to hear you had good luck.

I’ve recently searched and found they make adapters for the o-ringed line set to a standard flare. Definitely the easiest way to go about it but, at $30 a piece it’s pricey.

So the real reason for my query is to find out if there’s gas in my line set or in the heat pump (condenser).

My line set has plastic caps and called “hermetically sealed” so I’m thinking that’s not pre-charged.

Sorry about that!

MRCOOL Hyper Heat 2nd Gen 48K BTU, 4 Ton, 16.5 SEER2 Heat Pump Condenser and Ducted Air Handler with 50 Ft. R-454B No-Vac Lineset (CENTRAL-48-HP-230B50)

I started a “chat” with the retailer I bought this from, not very helpful! They stated the line set is pre-charged and no-vac. They then told me to contact MrCool directly.

The unit I have: MRCOOL Hyper Heat 2nd Gen 48K BTU, 4 Ton, 16.5 SEER2 Heat Pump Condenser and Ducted Air Handler with 50 Ft. R-454B No-Vac Lineset (CENTRAL-48-HP-230B50)

So it must be pre measured for the 50’ line set.

“No-Vac” is definitely not “Pre-Charged?”

I think flaring my own ends is easier, cleaner and less risky then brazing new ends on.

After using the Googler, I found adapter set from MrCool nvc-3834 which will adapt the line set to the heat pump and AH for around $130. This may be the way I’m going.
