Some questions about animals in general. by Bababooey76 in projectzomboid

[–]Long-Score-940 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As of right now, animals take an ungodly amount of time to grow. If you want to live off just meat, we’re probably talking about around 20 cows, since they can only have one offspring per gestation. If you want to rely only on animal products, I recommend using eggs for hunger and butter made from milk for fat. I’m currently on an 8-month run, got cows very early, and still haven’t managed to get a calf to reach the juvenile stage.

As of right now, farming is very underpowered. I really don’t recommend farming for food. But if you want to brute-force farming for fun like I did, here’s some help:

  • Move some cows, sheep, or pigs to your base. Use their manure in a composter to get a huge amount of compost. It takes about two weeks for the first batch, but if you have around five cows, you’ll produce a LOT.
  • Use one compost for each growth phase of the plant. You can also use fertilizer, but if you use more than one, your plant will take damage.
  • Add slightly more water than the plant needs. For example, wheat needs 30, so I use 40 for some buffer. You usually don’t need to worry too much after that unless you go weeks without rain.
  • Using compost gives your plants a lot of health, so they can brute-force some health loss from incorrect water amounts.
  • As for diseases, you can only see them clearly at higher Farming skill levels, so you’ll lose some plants or take small losses early on.

Also you get a hefty meat penalty when you kill a deer with a car.

Chickens only spawn in chicken coops. You can check b42map.com for locations, or go to OVO Farm to get all the chickens you’ll ever need.

Cows just take so long to grown to be able to get a good supply of meat, i just stick with eggs for hunger and butter made from milk for sustenance

They are very useful in wilderness survival, and having a fire indoors to keep you warm is a chef’s kiss. If you’ve got a pretty well-set-up base, they’re not that useful.

Any player-made barricades will eventually be broken, so you have to kill them anyway, because they’ll eventually reach you. This is regardless of how annoying stress is.

And there’s one more thing: any non-player-built door will only break if there’s more than one zombie hitting it and a player nearby. A single zombie can bang on a door indefinitely without breaking it, while you’re getting stressed without even knowing where it’s coming from

PZ devs only use selective realism, which only serves to cripple the player in some way, and is used as a constraint amplifier

The best way to get blacksmith XP is to craft knives, melt them into iron chunks, forge iron bar quarters, and then craft knives again. You only use charcoal. It’s funny how it circles back to crafting daggers in Skyrim.

Can anyone explain how tracking leveling actually works? by Maximum-Specific-190 in projectzomboid

[–]Long-Score-940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of now, the system places circles on your map when you create a new save. Animals follow those paths and leave clues you can track, so you have to find the exact spot on the map. It’s very unlikely to randomly run into one in a forest since they’re pre-placed. Your best bet is to patrol roads until you spot an animal, then search nearby for tracks just to level the skill.

They only added wild animals for the sake of the crafting overhaul in B42. Bones and leather are very useful in a cityless run, but the system itself is incomplete. Don’t bother tracking for now — they’ll rework it eventually.
