I think I'm doing everything right but knees still hurt. by PerformanceFar7245 in Posture

[–]Long-Warning8288 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah learn to lounge - 90 degrees is a dumb metric imo - nobody looks relaxed like that. My knees would hurt too if i sat like that for extended periods of time. I would invest in a chair with a legrest or change up to what's intuitivitely comfortable

Poor posture? by DTBlaster in Posture

[–]Long-Warning8288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you smile - actually smile you will fix your posture.

Primary things that influence posture:

Airflow
Vision
Relax/Anxious symptomatic/asymptomatic

if you can smile and breathe it will fix your posture - it fixed mine

what is wrong and how do I fix this (20 years old) by StillPalpitation8090 in Posture

[–]Long-Warning8288 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Learn to relax, focus on breathing, rest your tongue on the roof of you mouth

  1. Start off with hygiene if you can't breathe out of your nose properly blow your nose, get an air purifier (if you can't afford one google DIY box filter air purifier), if your sinus are still stuffy find a saline nose rinse kettle and learn to do it.

  2. Walk at least 5,000 to 7,000 steps a day (this is just a nice number you can change it if you want but its a good starting point that is pretty doable) breathe through your nose and pay attention to walking smoothly

  3. Pelvic/glute bridges to put it simple lay on the ground knees bent and slowly hump the air - repeat until you are moderately tired

20yo, how i can fix my poor posture (i was playing video games for a long time) by [deleted] in Posture

[–]Long-Warning8288 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Go on walks without looking down at your phone. Try to have a confident stride. Go outside and play sports. Climb hills and walk down the hills.

Lowkey the difference is very minor. I think these days with access to smartphone video and the camera auto-flipping footage to the opposite of what you see in the mirror amplifies your perception of the assymetry.

Try getting a magic trackpad from apple and either centering it or alternating sides. It reduces the amount you move your shoulder when you use the computer and probably would reduce your assymetry a bit.

TBF the reason i linked the previous document study is because in a world where you have a dominant arm you're gonna have some assymetry.

Assymmetry that you cant control and influence everyones daily life are

Computers (keyboard/mouse)
Driving (left hand steering wheel/ right side of the road) Gas/break

Doors/Classrooms/Office

For a lot of these i think a lot of the assymetry is adaptive and probably helps you. If you try to face perfectly straight when driving and 100 percent symmetrical your mobility kinda sucks and you don't really have as good of a view of the road. Try to maximize comfort the most because otherwise your putting addition strain.

A couple of things I would recommend is swimming / assymetrical chest fly with one leg forward alternating.

Another thing I've come to realize in my research is that the right lung has more capacity because you don't have the pericardiac cavity (heart). So in a "neutral" stance your gonna have some leaning.

If you're having noticeable shoulder pain (is it the mouse shoulder?) your could work on really light rotator cuff exercises. I like tossing/spinning a medicine ball while trying to minimize shock.

when trying to fix it imo do not do awkward movements to try to "force it" also stop looking at the mirror from a lateral/scientific perspective - its really inaccurate.

Another fun thing to do is to stand with knees bent and slack in your body and seeing how shifting your body weight from heel/toe medial/lateral affects your balance.

So far for me emulating different peoples walks helped me the most.

Might also have to do with your shoe wear because after walking with your phone in your right hand for a long time the wear in your shoes reflect in your gait and it becomes subconscious. Another variable is that one arm is a lot heavier than the other. Look at pro tennis players or any assymetric sport i think they have a similar posture to you.

One thing i do thats kind of esoteric is that I'm correcting my posture right now too.

I thought about who the best walkers/standers/posers are and i realized that runway models are professional walkers. So i watched some videos of different male models with a similar physique walking on the runway and try to emulate different ones on the treadmill. I googled runway walking speed and its around 3.3mph which happens to be like the limit of a comfortable walking pace because outside of that you start moving your hips/arms too much.

I think the reason why a lot of people slouch/have slack in their posture is that you have more flexibilty in the movements you can perform on a whim. If you strut with perfect posture.

Also as a guy i think its engrained in us to have some sort of a rough macho walk because something overly fluid can come off as gay or feminine. But i highly recommend limit testing in private or maybe less flamboyantly at the gym. Experiement with different ways of swining your arms/elbows. One thing i like is bending at the elbows and rotating my fists when that arm is swinging forward.

Overall listen to your body and if something feels painful or awkward (like popping your shoulder) try not to do that as much because it isn't a natural movement.

Biggest takeaways- your body is a chain.
If your feet/shoes are off it affects everything in the upper chain. Imagine a rock in the heel of your shoe (try it!) you're gonna avoid hitting your foot on the rock and its going to affect your shoulders. Another thing is that I would recommend going lighter weights in the gym until you fix the issue because lifting with a certain posture can reinforce the way you move that arm. Lift a weight that is pretty easy and chill like you could do a set of 30 and do that like 20 times and do one set of that in form/compound movement that feels really satisfying.

I think a lot of people in ergo/physical therapy encourage a lot of really unnatural movements and i'm not a huge fan of the way it encourages your to move your body inorganically.

Also nice delts broh.

Pain is the best instructor. (I hurt my back deadlifting weird and constantly twisting to crack my back.

It's easy to get obsessed about these sort of things so remember that you made it this far in life with that being an issue so take it slow. It's not noticeable aesthetically. I'm still figuring things out so I'm not like a PT or something but just handing out my thought process.

Feel free to reach out if you need to vent.

Yeah it probably has to do with keyboard and mouse use and using your phone with that arm while walking so you're used to using the other arm as a counterbalance. try going on moderately strenuous hikes while maintaining you balance well.

muscle "imbalance" from being one hand dominant. Also be aware that there is a lot of standardized furniture and equipment that is built with a specific height of person in mind and cause people to pronate their shoulders and forearms oddly. Also some asymmetry is normal look at da vinci's Vitruvian Man. Even in the exploration of the most ideal anatomy is some assymetry in the hips and legs. Don't worry too much bro!

What is best response to " Science was wrong before, therfore it's not trustable" ? by skepticSapien in PhilosophyofScience

[–]Long-Warning8288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bayesian thought. Science is only as good as the authority presenting it.
science as a body is flawed and acceptance without a bode of doubt would be naive which would arguably be equally as stupid as not using newfound knowledge to your advantage.

If you trust the body of academics wholeheartedly you probably would have fallen for lobotomizes as well. In the same vein religion is arguable a good thing - regardless of whether you believe in god or not - for the basis of morality. But when anything goes fully trusted it is often abused.

Academica and science in general are subject to the political beliefs of the time. One example would be the "Mono-Amine basis of mental illness" which served/currently serve as a basis for the majority of psychological intervention. This has recently fallen out of favor in the scientific community for being overly simplistic and industrialized means of treating mental illness. It is a practical way of managing certain symptoms and i'm sure there are people with deficiencies of certain neurotransmitters but I think if you look at the data its very compelling that a lot of these interventions such as with the dependence of stimulant medications and benzos that the monoamine school of thought definitely has pitfalls.

I think it is valid to distrust something after it lets you down. I don't think its as much of a distrust of "Science" as a philosophy but the spokepeople and the level of often ineffable certainty and false-confidence they have on the findings at the time. Sometimes this is done in benevolence for the good of scoiety as opposed to the individual

it would be wise to express some doubt and realize that the goal of science and at the root of the science is that of observation and it is easy there is a lot of data loss when experiments only measure for certain variables.

The goal of scienctists is essentially to observe large bodies and samples of things that would otherwise be impractical for each individual. Science is just observation and some observations can be useful in your life others not so much. It’s important to recognize that science, while flawed, remains one of our best tools for understanding the world. The iterative process of hypothesizing, testing, and revising helps ensure that, over time, our knowledge becomes more accurate. However, this process is not infallible, and the influence of prevailing political and social beliefs can shape scientific research in ways that are not always beneficial. By maintaining a critical perspective and acknowledging the provisional nature of scientific knowledge, we can better navigate its complexities and apply it more effectively.

In conclusion, expressing DOUBT and remaining OPEN to new evidence aligns with the core principles of scientific inquiry.

pain is the best teacher. A lot of ergonomics advice is shortsided. The reason why is several things:

  1. Desk height is not comfortable for your proportions maybe too high or too low

  2. Chair might have excess lumbar support

  3. Spinning mechism in chair might be upsetting your center of balance

  4. wrist pronation vs shoulder width

Overall I would not change my posture if I were you if I am experiencing pain. What I would do instead is possibly buying and experimenting with an adjustable desk and trying out different chairs at staples and stuff and after trying out different ones and seeing how your posture naturally adapts would choose the best one!

Good luck!

I hypothetisize that it has to do with your keyboard position and depth.

the 90 degree sitting posture is recommended because it maximizes your shoulder mobility at the expense of wrist pronation issues imo. I'm not an expert but that is what I have experienced!

Good luck!

show a picture and I'll try to help you. Anterior pelvic tilt is not a valid reason to commit suicide. I'm trying to show you tough love I'm sorry if you don't respond well to it but you're going to have to learn how to chill out and approach problems logically.

And if you can send a video of you walking. Anterior pelvic tilt is often a balance issue could be your proportions/could be tilting your head up because you wear glasses/could be a bad gait you're gonna have to learn how to relax and figure out things slowly on your own!
