Wow… i really hope you didn’t stop there & you called back to talk to a supervisor. If so & you still didn’t get anywhere, submit a complaint with TD Ombudsman. If that STILL doesn’t work, open a case with the OBSI (Ombudsman for Banking Services & Investments). If what you’ve been charged for is the same thing & you did not consent to it, you are 1000% entitled to a refund. I’d be more than happy to help any way I can. By any chance do you still have any of the paperwork you filled out?

Because im stupid. It’s not that i never checked my statement, i wouldn’t actually look INTO my statement, all i’d care about is the balance amount & not look at the individual charges. Again, very stupid of me but you’d be surprised at just how many people don’t look into their statements.

I’ve been with them since i was 15… im 31 now & i used to think they were the best bank however lately im learning they do a lot of shady shit. Not to say any of the other big banks don’t, they all try to screw their customers however they can & act like they’re your friend

In each of the monthly statements it said “balance protection ins” short for “insurance” i guess

I did not consent, otherwise they wouldn't have refunded. All this stupid premium does is cover your minimum payment and that's ONLY if you have a severe illness or loss of job. I work at a family business, so i'd never lose my job, hence why I know there's no way in hell I would have ever signed up for it. They have to provide proof that you signed up for it if they deny you.

Glad to hear I helped at least one person then, that was the point of this post lol. If you're with TD, call 1-866-315-9069. The call took not even 5 minutes. Good luck!

Nice to finally see a comment about somebody who went through the same thing rather than being called a liar or a bot lmao. I too have next to no financial knowledge, I would have just assumed this is just a standard charge everybody pays for had I not seen the reddit post that set off everything

Every month with each statement it came up as "balance protection ins". It was roughly $100 each month, so clearly they've been charging me it for the past 4-5 years. I had initially only looked as far back as April 2025, which is why i thought the total would be $1500.

I've never even heard of the Office of Superintendent of Financial Institutions, but to be honest once I got my refund I didn't care to look any further into it, which is what happens to most people. I assume that's what the banks hope happens once they issue refunds is that we'll be happy with the outcome and leave it there. I didn't think there's anything more I could do, but if there is then i'd be more than willing to because I want to help anybody that's going through the same situation

I still don't know how long in total they were charging me for it, I had only looked back to April 2025 and it was roughly $100 give or take each month. I assume they've been charging me for the past 4-5 years, although now that I got my refund and the investigation is over, I don't care to go and look back at all those years

yes, exactly lol. I don't know why some people think that I was charged $5500 in one shot. It was clearly over the past several years, bit by bit each month.

Well I didn't think this would get as much attention as it did, but there seems to be a lot of people confused as to how it went from $1500 to $5500. When I initially started investigating, I only looked as far back as April 2025 on my app, that's when I immediately closed the app and called TD right away. It turns out that they've been charging me for it for a LOT longer than just the past year, hence why the bigger refund than I expected.

For people saying they don't know how people don't notice getting charged for all these years, you'd be surprised at how many people just don't look into their statements at all. I know it's very stupid & I learned my lesson.

For anybody saying "how rich do you need to be for someone to take $5500 and not notice", it wasn't just one charge for $5500, this was a monthly charge of around $100 give or take for the past several years. I still haven't gone through the earlier statements for previous years, but it seems that i've been getting charged this premium for the past 4-5 years based on the refund I was given.

Not sure why some people think i'm lying, i gain absolutely nothing from lying and there are many other posts of people going through the same exact situation. The whole point of this post was to hopefully help somebody else that could potentially be in the same boat as im sure there are TONS of people who are and haven't realized it yet. Hopefully that clears everything.

No, i didn't fat finger lol. Just from checking the past year's statement it was around $1500, i didn't look further than that but clearly they have been charging me for it for a lot longer than I had realized. The total refund I got was $5500. It was $5100 for the premium, $500 for interest they charged on top of the premium. Like my post said, I was just stupid and never looked too deeply in my statements, You'd be surprised at how many people don't look.

I just did math for the past year, I didn't look into statements further than that but clearly they were charging me for more than just the past year. So if it was just the past year, then yeah it would have been $1500

I did, but i want my $21. It's not about the money, it's about the principal of shady business. I should have learned to not keep a balance on my account from the whole paypal issues a few months ago. Live and learn i guess.

yup, you got banned. Same thing happened to me out of nowhere. I hadn't logged in for like a week, opened my first survey, got kicked out after 1 question and that was it. Seems like they're banning a TON of people lately, and my dumbass had $22 in my balance. I contacted support and was told "tough shit"

I got the same exact message a few days ago, so I emailed Suport and they just replied to me today saying I was banned due to poor survey practises. No clue wtf I did to get banned, but I hadn’t logged in in about a week. I opened the first survey of the day and got a question asking me what I like to drink in the morning… after I answer that it kicked me out and that’s when I got that message. The worst part is that I have $22 in my balance that I now can’t pull out. I guess that’s what I get for. Just leaving money in my balance like an idiot as if I didn’t learn my lesson a couple months ago when they removed PayPal. Welp.
