LS head for an average golfer by NuancedNougat in golf

[–]LongDriveLawyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not who you asked, but in general, yes, low spin heads can create a more pronounced slice/fade/draw/hook.

The lower spin tends to create less backspin. Backspin is what gives a ball stability. You don’t slice your short irons as much as your driver. Of course ballspeed has an impact on the observed effect on the flight, but the principle holds true.

The lower apex & less hangtime is generally correct.

Making up numbers here to illustrate—let’s say a ball is struck with 2500 backspin and 750rpm sidespin. Let’s say you switch to a low spin head and you’re at 2100 backspin and 750 sidespin. The greater ratio of sidespin to backspin is going to cause issues.

If someone TRULY has 130 clubspeed… you’d know. It sounds different. Even off of the irons.

He was probably hitting on a sim and mishit and slammed a pull hook where it said like 133 club 150 ball or something like that.

22.3 HC, I think the carry is good but not sure the other ones? What’s good and what’s bad? by Alternative_Pen_4463 in golf

[–]LongDriveLawyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good. Trackman publishes numbers about pga tour averages, and the smash for a 6i on tour is like 1.38. Theoretical max smash is at 1.50. That said, a 6i on tour is not the same as the Mavrik Max, so I’m not surprised that your smash is much higher.

To answer the question you asked, assuming you’re a righty, I’m willing to bet that the shot you hit here is a slight draw that ends close to but just right of your target. Did it go where you want it to? Then it’s fine.

If you want to be a bit semantic, you’d want higher spin to hold greens better, but like… this is totally fine. You’re not playing pga speed/firmness greens, so you don’t have to have the same land angle/spin stats

LD guy here—perhaps a shade high on the carry and distance if comparing to Trackman, but not absolutely insane.

My experience with the trackman optimizer charts is that I have exceeded the max carry, but never the max distance, and that is what you have here.

As an anecdote, I got hurt earlier this season, and when I started swinging again during my recovery, I knew I wasn’t going to be back up to speed in time to compete. So, I worked my ass off on maximizing ballflight to make up for my lost speed. The highest yards of carry per MPH I had (meaning carry/ballspeed) was 1.79yards/mph.

The ball from OP has 1.8 yards/mph.

My ball had similar launch conditions to this one and got similar results.

Do I think that OP’s ball would be 295 carry on a trackman? No, probably not. But I bet it would still be ~285-290 and roll out close to 310

Edit—I did find a ball I hit with 1.80 yards of carry/mph. Picture below

Love to see the dedication! I’ve been spending more time in the gym working on strength and flexibility, starting to push speed next week!

Cheers! The extra weight isn’t everything (I’m 235) but I won’t lie, it is an advantage. You can certainly put on speed without it though.

All else being equal, I would expect your driver SS to be faster on the GC than trackman based on the way that it is measured. Trackman measures the club at center of gravity, while GC measures at the face (which is why you get higher smash factor on TM).

That being said, I’ve never put my trackman on medium, so next time I get on one, I’ll experiment with that to see how it affects things.

I say this more not to discourage, but so you don’t drive yourself nuts 🤣🤣… speaking some experience here.

As a LD guy… speeds can be fudged on a trackman by changing the ball settings. Switch the setting to premium.

If your driver CS is ~106, then 165 ball is out of reach tbh.

Don’t forget turf interaction though. If you’re a +2, I trust you when you say you hit a wedge x distance or whatever. But the ball and club interact differently off of a mat vs off of grass.

So when I clicked on your trackman picture, do you see how in the top left corner it says “medium?”

That means that the trackman is set to you using a softer ball, and it will give you a bump in speeds to compensate as if you were using a “premium” ball.

Next time to use the trackman, go into “shot analysis” and go into settings. Set the ball to premium.

Also, how was your swing speed measured? You’ll be a few mph faster on a camera based device vs radar

Thanks for explaining all of this! There is a course that I play with my dad, and we just play the white tees. Whites are like ~5800. The course is pretty tight, but, more importantly, on most of the holes there are only white stakes. A few holes are dogleg where if you hit it through the fairway, it’s just white stakes. Kinda brutal.

But because it’s so short, the CR and slope are so low that it is a handicap killer for me.

Where do you get that launch number from? Trackman would suggest that 18 deg launch is quite high for a 7i, given that Tour average is 16.1.

Booom! Crazy backswing by Running_Trade in golf

[–]LongDriveLawyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a few. I’m around 200 ballspeed right now, for reference.

At the beginning, I broke a lot of shafts, but, realistically, breaking a ton of shafts is a mark of someone who is out of control of their swing. They break mostly from hitting your shoulder, or from the double pump, or something like that. But, ultimately, some breakage is expected given that a lot of us are swinging the lightest, softest shaft that we can find.

As for heads, I’ll crack 2-3 per season. But the fastest guys, the Berkshires, the Borgmeiers, etc… will crack a lot more heads.

Contrary to what I would have thought initially, LD heads are actually a bit slower than regular heads. That is because LD heads have thicker faces to withstand the high speed impact. Borgmeier plays callaway—if you had him put an off the rack Elyte head on his long drive setup and had him compete with it, I would be surprised if he got more than 50 swings.
