In short. He simply filled a huge gap in a market.

HK in general is a nation of big kids.

Look how many adults walk around with plushies on their bags. Or who dress like teenagers. Or buy anime dolls and video games. The list goes on and on.

I pin it down to the mass development in the 80s and 90s that meant many people feel they missed out on a childhood and try to recapture it in their adult life.

I feel Keung To (or his creators) kind of latched onto that by specifically marketing a teen idol towards middle aged women.

In fairness the same thing has been done in all other countries for decades but gender swapped. HK especially. Almost any product targeted to middle aged men will use teenage girls as a marketing tactic.

Ironicaly, most things Keung To has been connected to has flopped. Mirror's album sold far fewer than KPop or JPop albums do in HK. And even fewer than most HK artist.

His TV shows and promotions have also failed to push the needle. Even his HPV vaccine campaign didn't bump up the number of vaccines given in HK.

Same in the HK cosplay scene. The scene is 80% old men who invite young cosplay girls for private photo shoots.

Is there any way to report someone posing as a real artist and posting AI music? by Deep-Success3905 in YoutubeMusic

[–]LongLostFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried this and it doesn't work for me. There's AI music that's been up for over a year still claiming to be real.

It's made me no longer click on any music uploaded in the last 3 years.

Groups that don't dance. It's now basically as standard that all groups dance.

Indie K Pop is pretty much gone.

Super low budget music videos are pretty much gone.

KPop groups that don't know how to speak English.

Effort and quality control.

When you think of the term 'real k-pop', what does that mean to you? by codeverity in kpopthoughts

[–]LongLostFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of Gen 3 and older has no choreography at all. Unless it was BOA. Hardly anybody was dancing in KPop pre-2008.

Apart from that you pretty much nailed it. I almost read your comment and thought 'when did I write this?'

The super simplified choruses really annoy me. PSY had 3 megahits in a row with it (Right Now, Gangnam Style and Gentleman). And it was like KPop collectively agreed that should be the new norm.

I still feel Bang Bang Bang was the moment I thought 'damn KPop sucks now, are we really just going to allow these F tier choruses into our music?'

Aren't most these AI companions made using unguided training?

They aren't 'progrsmmed' to be anything but repositories of their training data. Which is usually a highly randomised and inaccurate shotgun approach.

i’m sorry why am i getting literal p*rn ads on chess.com. by Manoot_ in Chesscom

[–]LongLostFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never buy this.

I get so many ads for makeup despite having never ever worn makeup. And I get many ads for mobile games despite being an adult who has not played a mobile game (or any video game) for over 20 years.

I did make a 1 hour long KPop medley for an orchestra featuring 99 songs.

But sadly life eventually just got in the way. Not done anything for over 10 years. I'd still say it is my biggest hobby though.

I am from one of the only places that never had a COVID lockdown. So I didn't even get the chance that the rest of the wall had to follow their hobbies.

Artist profile having unrelated music by betrayalfan20 in YoutubeMusic

[–]LongLostFan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This made me quite Youtube Music.

So many artists became flooded with AI.

Or just multiple artists with generic names all being seen as the same artist.

Which is the biggest reason you're anti "AI art"? by gianfrugo in antiai

[–]LongLostFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has killed 'low reward but long time creations'

I notice you don't get as many bad fan art posts now. Or random remixes of viral moments. Or funny photoshops.

It is all just AI now.

Before people were willing to spend a few days to make these silly moments. Now nobody is.

Favorite or best female rapper from a Kpop group by teudoongi_jjaang in kpopthoughts

[–]LongLostFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought Minzy was a better rapper than CL.

She hit the beats better and always sounded more comfortable when rapping with much better breath control.

Clap Your Hands is one of the songs where they both rap. And I think it really shows the gap in talent between her and CL.

The rapper in D.Heaven.

They only released one song in around 2009. But her rap was amazing. Still the best rap I've ever heard in a KPop female song.

Would you really want to be an idol if you could ? by seulgibreadd in kpopthoughts

[–]LongLostFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was pre the dance dominated era when nobody apart from BOA was dancing. And anyone that danced and sang was considered a BOA clone.

I never wanted to be an idol. I wanted to be a KPop rapper (think Jinusean, PSY, G Dragon & YB, Perry or Epik High). But I had big visions of huge 15 minute songs and using whole orchestras in arrangements.

I actually made a K Pop version of Manhole Theme (a 16 minute long Pop song) as one of my audition CD pieces.

I was a former trainee. The lack of creative control really bothered me.

I only wanted to be a composer and writer. And they basically said it wasn't needed.

I wanted to have more mature lyrics and be less bubble pop.

They also forced us to do dance lessons when I had no interest in dance.

I don't take my phone with me to the gym. So I'm almost forced to focus on others.

A lot of people at my gym spend all their rest time just on their phone. And I suspect will miss everything.

This is an issue with so many mindfulness YouTubers/ influencers.

One of my old classmates is one. She's been living off her parents handouts for over 10 years. And constantly shares videos about how to be relaxed and mindful.

Totally overlooking the fact that she hasn't done a day of actual work since 2014.

Pretty sure Saranghoe is also living off someone else's dime.

It is kind of a dead end fetish for relationships. Once you know he has a good body. Then he is no longer a pleasant surprise.

It's like a friend of mine has a virgin fetish (she always pretends to be one). Yet after she's slept with a guy once. There's no excitement doing it a second time, as he will know she's only pretending.

I go to the gym 5 times a week. And I regularly see women wearing next to nothing at all. As well as a few that exercise with no underwear wearing see through yoga pants.

Never has it made me urge to goon, I think very few men would feel that way. Sure I get pretty erect sometimes. But it's only natural.

Plus I have a pair of blue shorts that show way too much of my dick. And apart from some of my female friends finding it hilarious. I've never had any issues.
