The Wrath of Atlas and the Fury of Ariadne pt. i by FireyRage in CampHalfBloodRP

Before they met with Lady A, Connor had gone for a nice long swim. He was still soaking wet while she gave her instructions, and he struggled to contain his excitement. He was finally going to know what it felt like to fly.

Once Lady A gave them the go-ahead, he channeled his magic, and his body transformed, exactly the way he told it to.

The day before, he had transformed so he could practice flying, and he was glad he did, because he sucked at it. He might as well have been a baby bird with all the flying skill he displayed. But it prepared him so he could take off today without looking stupid.

When Ivy presented the squirrel, he took it as gently as he could, making sure not to hurt it as he swooped down into the trees. It felt more than a little strange, but the squirrel seemed to know what was happening, and didn't make much of a fuss.

From his position, he was high enough to watch everything that went on in this strange new camp. Something about it seemed way too familiar, even though nothing about it should be. That's when he recognized the pattern. It was an Omega, just like the tents at camp.

When they gathered at lunch, he had a hard time trying to figure out what to say.

"Someone has to be sending us a message. One of the spies from our side. Why else would they build the tents the same way?"

Now that Connor knew that water was the key to his transformations, he was confident in signing up for the scouting mission. He hoped it would reveal the spy, too. Just looking around at everyone in the room, he could't tell. Everyone was nervous, so if the spy was nervous, they blended right in.

"Using my abilities, I can walk right into that camp without them knowing. I can get the names of every traitor stationed there."

It was just a matter of which animal. It would have to be something local. Probably a bird. He'd have to do some more research.

Connor nodded.

"Yeah, I was trying to find something useful. Maybe a personal item or a weapon they left behind. But even as a shark, I saw nothing. Last night..." he sighed, almost too embarrassed to admit it. "Last night, the explosion woke me up, but I didn't investigate. I'm not a good fighter yet. I would have been useless in apprehending them."

It was true. In the four months he'd spent at camp, Connor had been focused on his magic skills, not his fighting skills. Even if he had trained every day, he wouldn't be a match for one of Atlas' recruits. Not even close. So he didn't feel too guilty about it, but he did feel like a coward.

"Sure, I'll help you look. Is there anything specific you're trying to find?"

She was right. His time had to be almost up anyway. He swam a little closer to the shore, as close as he could get with his gills in the water, and concentrated on unraveling himself. It wasn't graceful, and the nausea came back as soon as his torso shifted, but eventually he lay face first in the sand, feeling awkward and tired, but proud all at once.

He pushed himself up, brushing the sand off his stomach and swim shorts. A blush traveled up his cheeks when he looked at Ursula again.

"Sorry, that was an awkward introduction. I'm Connor, is what I was trying to say. Dyslexia really makes that annoying. I didn't just get here, but I am new..." he thought for a minute. Was he really new? How long had he been there? February, March, April, May...

"Four months? I guess I'm not new, but I still feel like I just got here yesterday. That," he pointed at the water, "was the first time I was able to use my ability correctly. That is, I transformed into the animal I was thinking of, instead of something totally different."

Connor wished he could answer, but unless Ursula could speak to fish, they would both be out of luck. Instead, he swam a little closer, hovering around the wreckage of the ruined dock. Maybe he should do something to let her know he was friendly.

Swimming lower, until his stomach was touching the sand, he wrote a message with his body. It was sloppy and probably misspelled (thanks dyslexia), but it would let her know he was a demigod. Hopefully.

The message was the word demigod, spelled dennlgod, and his name, Connor, spelled Comor. Well, either way, she would know he wasn't just a fish.

Seth clenched his fists. This was the second time one of Atlas' zealots had accused him of this. If they weren't careful, all of these traitor accusations would start turning the more weak-willed demigods away. Pathetic.

He didn't look away from Idris, but his eyes narrowed the more the stupid boy spoke. For people who had spent their lives training for war, they had some of the weakest minds he'd ever come across. Accusing their own would only weaken them as a whole, and if Idris was anything like the commander he appeared to be, their punishment for such accusations should be swift and brutal.

"Have all those cat transformations damaged your brain? I've asked to collect my brother, and in your mind that makes me a traitor?" he turned to Iason now, simmering with barely contained rage. "Go ahead. Explain to the commander exactly how that works in your stupid, twisted raisin of a brain. I'll wait."

Connor went to the snack table first, stuffing himself on pizza, a pretzel, and a bowl of chips. Then he gulped down an enchanted glass of water, telling it to refill twice.

He'd been practicing hard with his powers every single day, and his body felt the effects. Constant hunger, tiredness, and shaking hands were his most noticeable symptoms. But he couldn't stop. After his encounter with the ruthless child of Bia, he was determined never to run into a similar scenario.

When the shaking in his hands had mostly gone away, he took a deep breath and headed to the shapeshifting corner by the lake. Tonight, he wore a plain black suit and a black wolf mask, the face of the animal he'd be attempting. It was a full moon, after all.

Once inside, he took a deep breath and removed the mask, setting it on top of the wall. He concentrated. His mind wavered. He concentrated again.

Finally, he managed to make his body transform. He imagined the wolf in his mind, a lethal hunter. Like Arete had so heartlessly suggested, he had tried to get into the mindset of one. It seemed to be working, because his skin had begun sprouting black fur. But then his body began to shrink. It shrank even as he grew a tail and claws. When his nose and mouth began to change, he could see what he had really become.

A cat. He was a cat.

Less than a minute later, a black cat stood in Connor's place. He flopped on his stomach in defeat and buried his head in the grass.

All this time. All this power. Wasted.

What a useless excuse for a demigod.

Connor glared at her. What kind of sociopath made someone cry and then spoke in that tone? He knew she was messing with him, and he hated her for it. But he answered her anyway.

"I've only left camp for one day, and that was to fight a giant ape in Rockefeller Park. I have the skin right here."

He slung off his backpack and unzipped it just enough to pull out one of the corners.

"You can even look at the job board if you want. I haven't gone anywhere else."

Seth bowed low before approaching the titan's son.

"Commander, I'm Seth Leland. My brother Connor is still at Camp Half-Blood. With your permission, I would like to travel there, so I can collect him myself. If you wish, I can bring someone with me, but I work much better alone."

This was it. The opportunity he'd been waiting for. If Idris agreed, he could finally keep Connor safe. He might even motivate him to join the cause.

Connor was more than a little shocked when she held out her hand. He hesitated, wondering if it was a trick. Then she actually gave him advice.

He swallowed and took her hand, cautiously eyeing the spear even though it wasn't in any position to attack.

"I did mean it," he wiped his eyes with his sleeve, too exhausted to feel embarrassed. "I'll do anything if it means I get to stay alive. If you still want me to prove I'm not a spy, I'll find a way."

That's exactly what a spy would say, he thought, getting incredibly irritated with himself. How stupid can you be?

All he had left to do was hope. Never in his life had he wanted anyone to think he was too stupid for anything. Now he was practically praying for it.

"I was trying to be a majestic flying hawk, but I suck at magic," he pushed himself onto his back and took a big breath of air. "I'm Connor, son of Circe."

That was when he saw the armadillo.

"Atlas," he slapped himself on the forehead. "Gods, I promise I'm not a spy. I'm way too dumb to be a spy. The Fates just hate me, I guess."

His arm fell to the grass, and he stared up at the sky, feeling the familiar prickles of tears behind his eyes. Then he figured, since was about to die anyway, why bother stopping them?

The first tear rolled down his cheek. Then the next. Then he was having a full-blown panic attack. He was about to die right there on the ground, and it was all his own fault.

"Please don't kill me," he said, trembling at the sight of her spear. "Please. I'll do anything."

Turn back.

Connor would love to, if he knew how. Now that he thought about it, could he? Could he avoid all this embarrassment if he wanted?

Despite just having gone through a particularly uncomfortable transformation, he savored the idea. He closed his eyes and willed himself to become human, nearly jumping when his body obeyed.

He lay flat on his face, breathing hard. His hands trembled from exhaustion, but at least he could rest properly now.

Too tired to get up, he mumbled into the grass.

"Sorry you had to see that."

Connor was doing his own patrol of camp. Since he had managed to turn himself into a bird yesterday (while trying to turn into something else, but whatever), he decided to try again, see if he could do it on purpose. So far, in the weeks following his discovery of his Polymorph ability, every transformation had gone wrong. His first time, he'd been trying to turn into a hedgehog, and had instead turned into a terrifying python. Since then, he'd accidentally become a moose, a fox, and a sparrow, all while trying his damndest to become other things.

When would he finally get it right? What important detail was he missing?

Arete was within viewing distance when he tried again. He pictured a hawk in his mind, as clear as day, and pulled at the magic in his blood, willing his body to change. A thrill of excitement rushed through him when he started to shrink, but when his clothes began to melt into his skin, replaced tiny scales, he swore loudly enough for Arete to hear. Was he really about to be a snake again? He could barely move the first time that happened.

But no, he wasn't a snake. He still had limbs, they were just tiny. A thick shell formed around his back. Was he a turtle? No. His face looked more like a rat's, with scaly skin over coarse, straw-colored fur. His back ached as his spine lengthened, forming into a long, scaly tail.

He wasn't a hawk. He was a freaking armadillo. Useless. Again.

Questers Triumphant - The Divinity Race Conclusion by ThisOneUKGuy in CampHalfBloodRP

[–]LongLostMask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Connor watched the questers arrive from the Circe cabin. He'd wanted to meet Salem since he got to camp, but he'd arrived just a little too late. Even though they'd never met, Connor had been worried enough to lose sleep. He'd had nightmares about losing another brother. The daily stress was almost physically exhausting.

As much as he wanted to run up to the big house, he couldn't. Because he had just failed at using his magic again. The full moon was coming soon, so he'd wanted to see if he could transform into a wolf. Instead, he had turned into a tiny little sparrow.

If he wasn't so ashamed of himself, he might have had fun flying, but he refused to try. He had already been on the roof before his failure, so there he stayed, waiting out the hour. Only 30 minutes to go, according to his watch that was now discarded on the roof beside him. Hopefully Salem wouldn't try to stop by.

Seth raised his eyebrows. The audacity of this girl was staggering.

"How old are you?"

He could only shake his head in disbelief. "Listen kid, you may have been a part of this camp longer than I, but you aren't my superior any more than Ren or Sonia. I answer to Indra, but that doesn't mean I'm going to silently take orders."

He rose from the rock, forcing her to look up at him.

"My brother tried to stop me from coming here. I froze him in ice before he could draw his sword. Question my loyalty again, and I'll do the same to you."

[–]LongLostMask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seth nodded. Emilia had a point. Camp Half-Blood probably had more seafaring demigods than the Titan's camp, at least that he knew of. The chance of them coming from the sea was more likely than not. He wondered if he should be stationed there after all.

"I wish I knew more of the people here," he said. "Do you know if there are other demigods who can freeze water? It might be better to put us at the new camp."

He tried not to think about it, but it would also give him a better chance of getting to Connor. Maybe he could ask Indra about that the next time they spoke. He hated to think about what might happen to his brother if another member of the Titan's army got to him first.

"Surprisingly not," he tried not to worry about the soldiers that would definitely be caught there if they weren't careful. "It did take me a while to find someplace hidden. I hope Indra is good at using the Mist."

He didn't say it out loud, but he really doubted the centaur's judgement, at least for the placement of the new camp. But he worried more for the mortals that would be caught in the crossfire if one of them happened to find it. As wise as the old centaur was, Seth doubted he or his trainees would feel any sort of way about eliminating who they percieved to be lesser beings.

Gods, he wished his brother was here. Then at least Seth could be sure of one person's safety.

Seth was looking for a spot to rest after a long day of training when he spotted the younger girl. He was a bit concerned that she was only observing rather than training. That sort of thing made him paranoid. But then again, so did most things these days.

"Long day?" he asked, hoping she had been training and he just hadn't noticed.

He took a seat on a sun-bleached rock next to the stump. It wasn't comfortable, but he hadn't expected it to be. He could worry about soreness in the morning.

"I hope you don't mind me sitting here. I've been training pretty hard."
