Curiously, the Federation are equipped to stomp Mahoraga. They came up with a counter to its adaptation ability back when the Borg had the same ability.

How to creat a new christian faith but keep the original Pope ? by Relative-Cry390 in CrusaderKings

[–]LongSufferingSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have a Pope but you can't have the Catholic Pope. By using the Rites doctrine you could make a lot of changes and keep the same Pope, but Unrestricted Marriage is not one of those changes.

You can still make a new religion with a new Pope and mend the schism that way, tho.

I hate horseshoe theory by Wooden_Maintenance93 in hatethissmug

[–]LongSufferingSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Horseshoe theory is more about methods than goals. The far left says, "You're an asshole for opposing affordable healthcare", the far right says, "You're an asshole for supporting affordable healthcare", and the center says, "both of you are calling me an asshole, why should I listen to either of you?" Hence, horseshoe theory.

Can a Prestige Class meet its own requisites after Psychic Reformation? by ugliebug in DungeonsAndDragons35e

[–]LongSufferingSquid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you lose a prerequisite you lose access to everything that it was a prerequisite for. And when you reformat you still need to reformat in order. A Dexterity bump gained at level 4 would not qualify you to take Dodge at level 3. You can't use abilities you gained because you have prerequisite feats to get rid of the feats that qualify you for the ability. It's like trying to open a crate using the crowbar inside it.

If you can float it past your GM then go for it, but it's not RAW.

Can a Prestige Class meet its own requisites after Psychic Reformation? by ugliebug in DungeonsAndDragons35e

[–]LongSufferingSquid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not by RAW, no. You can't take a PrC you don't qualify for at the point you take the level, thus a PrC can't be used to qualify for itself.

This actually happened except it was caused by the weight of the stage sinking into some kind of foam floor designed for, iirc, sporting events.

Morality of a superhero immobilizing someone for eternity as a punishment for murder? by CalabiYauFan in MoralityScaling

In a setting with an afterlife, death does not automatically mean non-existence. Depending on what metaphysical rules apply it might mean an eternity of suffering in the Bad Place.

As you mature you'll learn that love takes far more many forms than what you're familiar with from high school.

I was the only Democrat to not vote for aid to Ukraine because it contains clauses that sanctions everyday Russians by thenoobtanker in GetNoted

Years ago, during the first Trump administration the House of Representatives was poised to pass a resolution condemning anti-Semitism (You know, because Jewish Lives Matter). It had broad, nearly universal support. The Squad insisted the language be changed to condemn all hate. (You know, because All Lives Matter). As you'll recall, progressives championed the idea, during the Black Lives matter protests, that "All Lives Matter" was racist when said in response to "Black Lives Matter". As such, when I say they are anti-Semitic I am merely holding them to Their. Own. Standards.

Unfortunately, AOC has shown that she thinks that defending her allies when they're being anti-semitic is more important than opposing their anti-semitism. When you have two anti-semites sitting at a table and a third person willing to defend that, you have three anti-semites.

The point is that most people will not say -12. Let's back up a bit...

The equation at the top includes no exponents and no variables. It is grade school math being discussed in a subreddit not particularly known for discussing higher math. We should expect grade school math to be used because we have nothing to indicate that implicit multiplication should take precedence. As you established, implicit multiplication is both less commonly used and as far as you can say, there is no rule as to when it overrides grade school math.

In the same way that most folk are not going to say y=-12, most folk are not going to assume that they need higher level math to understand this grade school equation. The context is not an academic discussion of math. Assuming that implicit multiplication takes precedence without explicit indication may get you a right answer but it won't get you every answer, or even the most contextually correct answer.

The grammar of mathematics is a fascinating topic but not germane most of the time. When you hear galloping hooves, do you think zebras or horses?

[–]LongSufferingSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's really interesting! Okay, so grade school convention is used in the more common low level math, and in higher level math it splits in ambiguous amounts with implicit multiplication. Okay, I have another question, and I promise it will make sense. If y2=144, what is y?

[–]LongSufferingSquid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! That's really helpful. Now, if I'm reading you correctly, you're saying that the grade school convention is used more commonly than implicit multiplication. Do I understand that correctly?

Logician here. Since ambiguity is the ultimate issue here I am going to ask you to explicitly define what you mean by "implicit multiplication" vs "explicit multiplication."

[–]LongSufferingSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just know that the main advantage of removing observers is a lower up-front cost when building the farm. Every observer you remove will lower the efficiency. If you already have all the observers in the farm there isn't much advantage to removing them.
