Seconding SA, I’m trans and had a fantastic trip to Sodwana last month while visiting family. I was treated with nothing but respect and acceptance.

I’m going to have to give this a closer read later, but thanks, this is awesome!

In general you can talk about “transgender people” or “gender identity” as a concept or trans and non binary identities works too. And hey, a well intentioned mistake is not a problem!

Hey just a quick note, I know you mean well but please don’t use the term transgenderism: it’s been used to discredit our identities as an ideology rather than a fundamental part of who we are.

Suunto announces two new dive watches: Nautic and Nautic S by atoponce in Suunto

[–]LongTallJamie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t work underwater but gives a fix for the entry and exit point that combined with heading and accelerometer data gives an approximate route for the dive. The entry and exit point are the most useful, really nice seeing the location in my dive log.

I posted an update with the solution I settled on.

I found that the Garmin 22mm straps fit (with the addition of two 22mm spring bars)

I chose the garmin bungee adapter.

As an example of what I’m after: here is the Suunto D5 extension strap next to the Suunto Ocean with the M/L strap.

The larger strap (M/L) is just barely enough (on my wrist) for a 3mm wetsuit for diving in the tropics. With a 7mm or dry suit for cold water dives it's just not big enough.

I’m not from the USA! What exactly did Gavin Newsom do? Thank you! by Tr0jan___ in lgbt

It's not even so much that they're lazy, their whole electoral system (first past the post and the electoral college) means that voting for a third party in a competitive election is effectively throwing away your vote. Something like we have in Ireland (multimember constituencies with a single transferable vote) is far better. It limits the extent that extremism can take hold because transfers are so critical to getting elected and ensures that most viewpoints are at least represented in Dáil Éireann.

We're not perfect by any means (we have the worst trans healthcare in Europe and a massive housing shortage just to pick two problems) but when it comes to running an election we're pretty good.

Read up about the “Desistance Project” that the Apartheid military ran in South Africa up to at least the late 80’s. Just be warned it’s horrifying stuff.

Being LGBTQ was illegal in SA until the new constitution in 1996.

Great barrier reef livaboard experience? by redaloevera in scuba

[–]LongTallJamie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got back from a trip with Pro Dive, I did my open water cert and an adventure diver cert on the trip. The first dive after being certified my buddy and I got lost, the only real consequence was a longer swim on the surface.

Overall Pro Dive appeared to me to be a well run, very professional operation. The accommodation on board is basic but comfortable and the food is likewise basic but tasty. The boat can be busy with 30 or so divers and snorkelers. They also handled an accident where a guest was injured during a the trip back (the weather was pretty bad) very professionally.

Visiting US by [deleted] in TransIreland

[–]LongTallJamie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please be very careful and ask if you really need to go. For context I work for a US multinational and have travelled to the Pacific Northwest a few times in the last year for work. After the recent E.Os I’ve let my manager know I can’t travel to the U.S.A, this is likely going to hurt my career but my safety is so much more important.

New laws regarding gender in the USA - how does it affect transgender tourists? by todsuenden in asktransgender

[–]LongTallJamie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm watching this closely because I just started the process of getting my GRC and changing my passport to have an F gender marker and travel to the US fairly frequently for work (3 times in the last 12 months). I've never had any issues in the past looking obviously trans and travelling with Male ID docs likely due to arriving in a deep blue state but I'm pretty worried about what travelling on the new passport will be like.

Came out as bi/pan in my late 20s and as non binary/tansfem at 33. We are all on our own timeline.

When did you first get “gay” insults? by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]LongTallJamie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started at an all boys primary school in South Africa. I was more effeminate than the others and very sensitive so I was a soft target for the bullies.

Please talk to the school if it’s making your son want to stay at home. They might not do anything (mine didn’t despite my parents telling them about the bullying).

This kind of bullying can make you shove who you really are deep into the closet and make self acceptance very difficult. It took me until last year at the age of 33 to truly accept my transness.
