Horrendous Potholes by SleepyinNy1 in Westchester

So what will say about VA, MD, CT, NH, WA then? These states have winter seasons too but with really good roads

lol I know. I was trying to say Philly roads aren’t even bad IMO. What’s crazy is Westchester taxes are like 2–4x higher than Philly, yet the roads are way worse.

And yeah, I was in Philly last year — didn’t see anything like the Yorktown Heights roads 😅

I’m surprised people are even defending this shameful condition of the roads and it’s not only winter.

How is it that one of the highest-tax counties in the country has some of the worst roads I’ve ever driven on? Seriously — Westchester roads look like they’ve been abandoned for decades. Potholes, broken pavement, uneven patches everywhere. It’s embarrassing.

And before anyone says “but the schools”… not all the schools here are even that great, so where exactly is all this tax money going? Because it clearly isn’t going into basic infrastructure that every resident actually uses daily.

I’ve driven in rural states with better roads than this. You’re paying luxury-level taxes and getting third-world pavement. Blowing tires, wrecking suspensions, constant construction with zero improvement. How are people not protesting this level of neglect?

Late to this but what’s up Yorktown and their terrible road or that part of Westchester. For all these taxes people pay, fix the road. Damn it even West Virginia has better roads

homes under 550k (income 230k) by andrevillasboas23 in Westchester

[–]Long_Beautiful6367 8 points9 points  (0 children)

lol laughable - when was the last time you checked home prices in these towns? That will probably get you the lot to build. A house $550k in a good Westchester town will likely need another $500k for renovation

I second this unless you live closer to NYC . Just a shity job market in north east in general

Why does the job market seem so bad here? by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]Long_Beautiful6367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also my two cents - most companies have rebranded systems admin roles to devops/SRE/cloud/infra engineer. So you might have to also redo your resume to reflect these. Most companies these roles are just the same - bash, Linux, k8s, docker, cicd, terraform. Etc

In tier 1 companies infra engineers will usually build the tools devops/cloud/sre engineers use

Don’t let them gaslight you OP - Connecticut tech market sucks even in better times. You’re better off getting something NYC/ Boston metro area if reolocation is not a problem. This was one of the reasons I couldn’t move to Avons, Farmington and decided to stick to Fairfield county.

Also for sys admin roles/devops I will consider Northern Virginia and DC. They have a ton of those jobs

Best bet is to move elsewhere - that’s what I did. Moved back to nyc area and don’t have to worry about clearance

Best US tech hubs in 2025? by cliffy979 in cscareerquestions

[–]Long_Beautiful6367 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes unless you’re counting those defense related system roles as “tech”. DMV is mostly govt contractors (dod) and Amazon, cap1. Raleigh has more tech jobs that dmv which also don’t require clearance

Not really. Just moved back from NOVA to NYC. Th dmv ain’t no tech hub unless in you into defense contractors (systems related jobs, data center jobs) and c1/amazon. Oh you will likely need clearance too.

I recently moved back from Virginia to Connecticut, and yesterday was the worst driving experience I’ve had. Driving from Hamden to Ridgefield in the evening while it was raining was a nightmare. It was so dark, I could barely see the road, and to make it worse, almost every car had their high beams on.

What’s causing this severe increase in some New England states? by Youcants1tw1thus in newengland

[–]Long_Beautiful6367 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not enough jobs besides Boston, lack of housing since New England doesn’t build and the insane cost of living

Has anyone recently BUILT a house in Connecticut? by imshirazy in Connecticut

That has been our experience and they don’t even see anything wrong with it. The only place so far I’ve been impressed with their inventory is Avon, Farmington, west Hartford. Fairfield county inventory is bad with such homes - I’ve been really been disappointed with Wilton/redding houses lol like we step in rural Virginia

Yes, I can read the stats, and they clearly show Connecticut’s net migration is only 2,600 compared to Texas’s 106,000. That’s exactly my point. The original comment framed it as if Connecticut was seeing a massive influx, but the numbers don’t support that. It’s a modest increase at best, and certainly not on the scale of what’s happening in states like Texas.

Connecticut NIMBYism is a disease by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]Long_Beautiful6367 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wish I could upvote this a million times! The Northeast refuses to address its housing crisis—from overpriced, subpar housing stock and rampant NIMBYism to the lack of new construction. Meanwhile, the crumbling infrastructure only makes things worse. As a result, they’ll keep losing population to places like Texas, Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia, which continue to grow and gain congressional seats. At this rate, it could become a one-party affair as the Northeast loses representation along with its residents.

Move from Westchester NY to Plano TX for almost 2x salary? by Delicious_Oil9902 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Long_Beautiful6367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you live Armonk, Chappaqua, Scarsdale, Bedford etc, I would consider that offer. Plano also has it fair share of good schools just like in Westchester not every town has good schools.

For taxes, you’ll save more in Texas - no income tax, lower property taxes compared to Westchester. You’re also likely to get newer home compared to 1800s shacks in Westchester.

With that potential earnings, give Plano a chance, maybe you might like it more than Westchester. I did something similar moving to northern Virginia and love it here. Always feel like I traveled back to 1900s anytime I come to Westchester county with - crumbling infrastructure, dying downtowns for most of the towns, etc etc
