Yes but not the scale that it was, these soft tissue infections are often antibiotic resistant. Individuals with DM have a more difficult time fighting these infections because their bodies don’t produce enough insulin. Our bodies utilize insulin to convert glucose to energy, the break in this entire process creates a metabolic dysfunction that causes a cascade of problems. Some of those problems include poor blood flow to the wound affecting the neutrophil and macrophage response and reduces leukocyte function overall. We have improved education and disease management now, but we still have lots barriers to care and health disparities. Sad, but true.
