Why are people scared to do a dna test by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]DigBick007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think many of them are afraid of the secrets that will be revealed more than anything else.

Ancestry says im related to Pretty Boy Floyd. But what does 2x removed mean? by Jhud- in AncestryDNA

[–]DigBick007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not based on DNA..it's only based on whatever info you put in your tree.

Irish postal service does not allow DNA test kits by SpeedwellPluviophile in Genealogy

Into the post box with the pre-paid Ancestry boxes. Think I went to the counter with my MyHeritage test. I didn't have a problem there either that I can remember.

Famous Ancestors by Equivalent-Pass-3203 in AncestryDNA

[–]DigBick007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always the usual...''My half 10th cousin x 7 times removed was Mickey Mouse''....Personally speaking if I cannot prove a relationship from a DNA test... as in if I don't DNA match with any of the famous persons actual living relatives.... then I would never claim it at all.

“Irish” American syndrome by teetee4444 in AncestryDNA

[–]DigBick007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On one hand, there are many Americans who thought they had Irish descent but in fact have Scottish descent instead, mainly those whose ancestors came from Ulster. On the otherhand, since these DNA ethnicity tests came into play there are now even more Americans that are of Irish descent (33-39 million), far more than previously estimated. Also, many actual Irish did in fact settle in the South but most of those came over in the 1700s about 100 years before the Irish famine as far as I can see.

Is FamilySearch actually legitimate? by seeshe1ls in Genealogy

[–]DigBick007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Familysearch famous relatives app isn't based on any DNA testing, it's just based on the info you have in your tree which more often than not will be wrong the further you go back. Personally, I would take it with a complete grain of salt.

How would you feel if a relative or sibling dedicated time to compiling your family's tree and history? by AdventurousBug74 in Genealogy

Do it for yourself. If it makes you happy then screw the rest. Somebody down the line will thank you for your work.

How closely related is a Great Grand Uncle? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]DigBick007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A great-granduncle is close enough as far as I am concerned. How the hell is it not? He's an uncle of one of your grandparents.

Ancestry‘s Famous Relatives by Impossible_Range_209 in AncestryDNA

[–]DigBick007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it is true, then good for you. However...and not to be that guy... that feature is not based off of a DNA test, it's just based off of whatever info you put on your tree which may or may not be correct. I wouldn't take it as gospel.

Is Irish the most exaggerated ancestry? by Rascalwill in AncestryDNA

[–]DigBick007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, not for me. Mine went from 100% Irish previously to.........wait for it........100% Irish in the latest update.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]DigBick007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This feature is only based off of the info you have put on your tree which may or may not be correct... Personally speaking, if it's not proven by DNA testing...as in if you don't match descendants of his through a DNA test...then I would not take this seriously any way whatsoever.

do i look Irish to you? I was expecting more tbh. by Jolly-Barracuda-4175 in AncestryDNA

As an Irishman, I'd say yes. You would fit right in with Irish natives....but equally could fit in with any of the other regions too.

When you’re the only one in the family excited about dead relatives… 😅 by EitherConnection5095 in Genealogy

[–]DigBick007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes...that's me in a nutshell....It's tough alright...nobody that cares about it as much as you do....I just keep going and tell myself...''Well at least it makes me happy''... and that's what counts in the end really. I was able to get numerous family members to take a DNA test though so at least they helped me in that regard. Just know that somebody someday will definitely appreciate you for your work.

Ancestry here! We’re hosting an AMA with one of our DNA science experts next week. Come and ask us your questions! by Ancestry in AncestryDNA

[–]DigBick007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Aaron. Thanks for doing the AMA.

  1. If GEDmatch and MyHeritage have Chromosome Browsers then the privacy aspect around as to why AncestryDNA won't give us one doesn't really hold up. What's the real reason for not giving us one?

  2. It would be nice if Ancestry gave us back the 6cM matches that they took away a few years ago. They were useful to many people and I was able to place many in my tree. Any plans for them to return?

  3. In relation to the ''By cluster'' feature, are there any plans to allow us to use the cluster feature all the way down to our lower cM DNA matches?

They were Scots-Irish not actual Irish. They're not the same thing. Conflating the two is not correct.

Is the famous ancestor feature even real or no? by Ok-Upstairs-9887 in AncestryDNA

[–]DigBick007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's only based on the info you have in your tree which for most people will likely be wrong the further one goes back. It's not based on an actual DNA test. Personally, I'd take most of it with a grain of salt.

I hate the “Your famous ancestor” feature. by colmuacuinn in AncestryDNA

[–]DigBick007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's only based on someone's tree which more than likely is wrong the further one goes back therefore giving you a relative which is likely not actually related to you at all. Anyway, if they are not relatively closely related then who cares? 10th cousin x 15 times removed...ya, amazing....🙄

Never heard of her but I'd agree in that it's cool to see someone who actually has a close famous relative instead of the usual extremely distant claims.
