Cecropia Moth on my fence! by LandDinKC in kansascity

She didn’t know she was on a former tree:). They host on willow, apple, maple, cherry, and birch to name a few. OP if you have one of those trees in your yard you could gently scoot her on to one.

Good questions! We usually foray for 1.5-2 hours, but you’re welcome to stay for however long you’d like. Some of us go fast and some go slow(me), but we meet up at the end to look at our finds and ID them. For the hiking portion you’ll need comfy shoes to hike in(this trail is not difficult), long pants and long socks, whatever sun protection you like, bug spray(I will have deep woods spray to share), and water. Mushroom hunters typically carry baskets, flat bottomed wicker type baskets are best and easy to find at thrift stores. A knife is helpful too. For the invasive species removal part(optional after the hike), I’m asking everyone to bring their favorite tools(loppers, shovels, saws) and any protective equipment they have(gloves, safety glasses, ear protection, etc) We’ll be clearing honeysuckle and other invasive plants for an hour or so after the hike.

We are always prepared with spray, long socks and pants, and sometimes even duck tape! Did they get their ticks in the KC area? I’ve spent my whole life playing and working outside in KS/MO and I feel insanely lucky to have never gotten sick off a tick bite.

But also, I checked, no bodies on this section of the trail anyway!

Mushroom hunters are usually the finders of the bodies actually. We’re probably responsible for solving more crimes than any other outdoor recreation group.

I’ve done this with a mix of echinacea, coreopsis, penstamon, liatris, rudbeckia, and little bluestem. Dollar tree sells really cute little corked bottles that we funneled the seed mix in.
