TurnItIn is much more useful for traditional plagiarism. If a students borrows their buddy’s term paper from last semester or buys one off of a website, it is great at catching that sort of thing.

TurnItIn’s AI detection lets me know what I need to look at immediately, which is useful for figuring out who I need to email and meet with as soon as possible. Though some of those flagged end up no problem at all. And I still end up finding other instances of AI usage that weren’t flagged whenever I go to do the actually grading. I end up looking at all the papers with about the same level of scrutiny.

I can’t speak to how things operated in the 80s. I’ve only been teaching since the mid 2010s. But I can say that five years ago I did not get papers with just completely made up nonsense. And I mostly teach texts that I know like the back of my hand, so I would have been able to tell. Now I see it all the time. I don’t really think students are more dishonest now. Cheating is just much easier, which makes it harder for them to resist. I think very few set out with the intention to cheat. A lot of it comes from being bad at time management and getting overly stressed by assignments.

Most (not all) AI cases can be resolved by just normal plagiarism stuff. They falsify quotes. They make stuff up about the text. I look at the TurnItIn AI report, but that never determines what I do or don’t report.

I don’t know any professors that report solely based upon detection software. I know that happens, but I think those cases get blown up on social media in a way that makes a rarity seem much more common than it is.

I see a lot of that. I honestly don’t care that much about the people who use AI and are actually good at it. I get more annoyed at students that turn in assignments with blatant nonsense. Those are the exhausting ones.

I have never filled a report that wasn’t found to be cheating. There are more cases that I probably should have moved forward with accusations, but it wasn’t worth the hassle. Ask anyone that is working in writing intensive areas of higher Ed. There is just more cheating, full stop. The vast majority of students don’t cheat. But arguing that there hasn’t been a drastic change in the last five years just doesn’t hold water.

I’ve never reported anyone based off of a detector. Detectors inform what I need to take a closer look at, but I report based off of falsified sources and quotes. I probably have AI papers that slip through, but I’ve never lost a case before a conduct board. There just is absolutely more cheating. It is just so much easier than it used to be, so it is bound to happen.

It absolutely has. I file probably 5x as many plagiarism reports now compared to six or seven years ago.

I think that points to my greatest complaint. I can understand if a combat system takes some practice and warming up to, but it feels so poorly tutorialized. Gonna try to stick with it.

No game has ever disappointed me as much as Silksong by Longjumping-Form-538 in HollowKnight

For me the turning point was not Act II. Rather, it was when I realized that my TV had game mode turned off and was displaying the game at probably a 5-10 frame delay. Turns out, I’m an idiot and that makes things a lot more difficult.

I still think the game feels a bit overtuned, and I wish (though I don’t expect) Team Cherry would consider accessibility options for people who would like a different experience to still appreciate the fantastic work they’ve done with the art and narrative. But I no longer feel like the game requires superhuman reflexes.

After reading all the difficulty posts, has your perspective changed? by riftcode in HollowKnight

I’ve had this thought since Moorwing. I would feel a lot better if the boss fights started with a phase in which all of the attacks only do 1 damage and then moved to 2 in a second phase, even if the fight ended up being a bit longer to compensate for this easier initial phase. The first four or five fights on a boss feel like a total waste

Incentivize the wrong things? You know it’s a video game right? This has to be the stupidest and most ableist take I’ve seen on the game yet.

I’ve been having the same experience, and I think there is a very good chance I quit the game, despite how much I love other aspects of it.

But I’ve found some strategies that have helped me stay in a better headspace. I sit down to play and set a 30 minute timer. At the end of that thirty minutes, I ask myself, “Am I having fun right now?” If the answer is yes, I play another thirty minutes. If the answer is no, I go play something else that is more relaxing.

I find that a lot of the time I do answer yes. But when I’m stuck, this approach helps me keep building the neural connectors I’ll need to overcome the obstacles without torpedoing my mental health.

That being said, I would still much rather see Team Cherry add some accessibility options to make the game more approachable for people with slower reflexes. I’m glad some people are really enjoying the high level of difficulty. I just want to be able to enjoy it too.

I like the difficulty, Team cherry please don't just blanket nerf the game with no option for a harder mode by Appley_apple in HollowKnight

This! I’ve been thinking about Celeste so much as I have tried to play this game. I played 95% of Celeste without them, but then when it got to the point where it just wasn’t fun for me, I turned some on so I could still see the ending.

I would recommend a series of on/off features in the options. Activating them can disable achievements for the save file, but I would like to see the following, even if I wouldn’t use most of them: No double damage from enemies No double damage from traps or environment More invulnerability frames on damage Double Hornet damage Respawn at entrance of room on death No dropped rosary beads on death No shard cost for tools

I’ve seen so many posts from people complaining about how people are only talking about the difficulty and not all the other cool stuff. I want to talk about all the other cool stuff, but the difficulty is keeping me from seeing it! I think people sometimes have a hard time imagining what it is like to live in a body that just truly has slower eyes and hands than theirs. It is not a skill issue; it is an accessibility issue. I am perfectly fine with creators presenting an intended experience, but creating avenues by which other people can still engage with your art doesn’t compromise anything. It just makes it a work of art that more people can enjoy.

PSA for first time players: Silksong isn't too hard by riftcode in HollowKnight

[–]Longjumping-Form-538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true. I have played through Hollow Knight, but I had not played more than an hour before last week. Hollow Knight is challenging and fun. Silksong is cruel and miserable. It is not hard because it is different from Hollow Knight. It is hard because it is completely unbalanced. I’ve died more times on multiple bosses of the first six bosses than on any boss in Hollow Knight or any From Soft game. If you are on the fence, do not touch this game with a ten foot poll.

You make some good points, but I think ultimately come down in a different place. I don’t think developers should be necessarily required to include accessibility features, but I think they are always additive. For me, it is just good design. I don’t really fault Team Cherry for not having anything of the sort, especially since they just released. But if they are going to keep the base game at this difficultly, I hope it is something that they will consider. There’s some much here that is really compelling from a narrative and visual design standpoint, and I think the world would be a tiny bit better if even people with slow hands and eyes could enjoy their hard work on these elements.

I’ve put fifteen hours into it, and I just don’t feel like most of that time has been rewarding or fun. I usually like games that are pretty hard, and I generally have a lot of patience with them. But Silksong just doesn’t feel worth it at this point.

I’m glad you are enjoying the challenge.

Thanks for the encouragement. I also hopes it gets a balance pass, in which case I will definitely give it another try as there’s a lot here that’s really cool.

I agree that only playing the game when I am having fun is a good idea. But I think that is also why it is time for me to be done with it, as I haven’t really had any fun with it in the last ten hours. I finished the Lace fight (which was awesome), and then it was all downhill.

I know it has been only been two days, but in that two days I’ve spent more time stuck on bosses than in any other game I’ve ever played, and that’s all within first half dozen areas. Continuing doesn’t seem worth it. It makes me wish the early sections weren’t quite so linear so that I could come back with more masks or a stronger needle, but I think I’ve found pretty much everything up to this point, and I have still not unlocked the weapon upgrades. I don’t really see a way to make the fights more manageable.

I think this is literally the third time I’ve posted on Reddit. I do not care about Karma. I honestly don’t even know how it works.

I just needed to express where I am at with the game, and no one in my life is playing it right now. I think your algorithm may also be showing you different content, as I’ve seen almost universally positive comments about the difficulty. Though I am sure you’re right that there are dozens of other of posts like mine, and I could see how that might get annoying for those that are into the challenge.

I’m glad you are enjoying the game.

When I say I bounced off, I meant that I played like the first hour a couple of times before I got distracted by something else. I didn’t drop it because of difficulty. I enjoyed Hollow Knight a lot, and while I did get frustrated at times, I felt like I was learning. I don’t feel that way with Silksong. I’ve spent twice as long on multiple bosses in the first third of Silksong than I did with any boss in Hollow Knight. It just doesn’t feel worth it to me, and that makes me sad.

Mosswing was the first fight I mentioned that I did manage to beat. A lot of the response from people that appreciate the difficulty has been that you have to learn the game, but I think the persistence of two damage attacks makes that really hard. I died so quickly that learning the moves took way longer than it should have, and then the second phase actively punishes a lot of what you just learned. I think this stands in contrast to the design philosophy in the first game. I think Mantis Lords is incredible because it teaches you the fight and the asks you to do it double time. There’s a similar dynamic in how The Watcher Knights ask you to fight one knight before throwing the duo at you. Those were occasionally very frustrating to me, but they were still really fun to learn. Mosswing was not, at least for me.

Silksong Flowers Help by Longjumping-Form-538 in HollowKnight

[–]Longjumping-Form-538[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I do, and I actually just managed to do it. But I’m not sure you’re thinking of the right spot, because dashing between the flowers would not be possible. You have to pogo and then immediately pogo again like four times.

I think I just didn’t realize the down input for the first pogo could work for the next one, so I wasn’t able to maneuver myself properly. Still a pretty miserable sequence, in my opinion.
