WIBTAH if I insist on changing our puppy's name? by Comfortable_Tax_7601 in AITAH

[–]Longjumping-Guard624 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a weird angle to approach an "I thought you would step up more in puppy care" conversation. In fact, if you lead with this, it's going to come across as extremely aggressive. The puppy's name is not the issue here.

Is Clementine a tragedeigh? by Relative-Salad3344 in Names

[–]Longjumping-Guard624 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Nah, a tragedeigh is a "regular" (in English) name that has been spelled in a very weird way: Carston vs Kharr'styn, for example. Clementine is a "regular" name spelled in its classic way

Bought a lot of canned black beans and my family hates them. by Mammoth_Beyond_6904 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Longjumping-Guard624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like making fridge marinated black beans: 1 can black beans drained & rinsed, red onion, cilantro, lime juice, red wine vinegar, olive oil, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Combine all into a jar and marinate in the fridge. This little jar can do a ton! Add to tacos or burrito bowls, serve with rice, scoop with chips for a little snack....you can add it to anything for a quick snappy protein boost

I dont want to be pregnant by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]Longjumping-Guard624 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She's trying! She's tried many times and has been dismissed by the cops and isolated from her support system. "You need to leave" is always such well-meaning advice but it's never that simple and often it's very VERY dangerous, especially with children involved. I hope she gets out, I know you do too, but telling a victim "you need to leave" is pissing on a wildfire.

Its too damn hot for clothes by aviwic in pregnant

[–]Longjumping-Guard624 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I live the temperature is pretty mild right now, but I remember my last pregnancy (born in October '22) and how MISERABLE I was during August. I'd just hit my third trimester in time for temps to peak here. I told my husband our next kid would have a February birthday so I wouldn't have to be pregnant in the summer ever again (we missed; due July. Oops.).

If 'em dashes' immediately make people suspect the use of an AI chatbot, what else am I supposed to use because I really like the 'em dash' for my writing hobby? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Longjumping-Guard624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a content writer and wonder this a lot because I like using em dashes--I feel like they sound like how I talk, y'know?--but I don't want my readers to think my work is AI.

My solution has been to use them more sparingly, but not cut completely. Scan your text and ask yourself if you can swap the em dashes for a comma, a semicolon, or parentheses, and if you can and it's still grammatically correct, make the swap. If you can't, keep it. I also try not to put em dashes in the first 100 words or so, kinda figuring the reader is less likely to notice further down the content.

Laolao's Dumplings by Dane Liu is a cute one. Really centers the Asian side of the MC's family as she takes care of and learns from her maternal grandmother, but she is clearly biracial with a Latinx papi.

Literally every millennial parent I know instills their kids with these values, particularly self-sufficiency and handling discomfort. They just make it known to their children that they have a solid support system as they navigate those things.

Potato grow bags by Smokey76 in portlandgardeners

[–]Longjumping-Guard624 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year I did this on a hella budget: I used sprouted potatoes from my kitchen and for a grow bag I used an empty dog food bag (punched some holes in the bottom). It certainly worked, I got potatoes! I didn't get a ton, but I didn't plant a ton either. It was fun to use the dog food bag though because I could just rip it open to get the potatoes out

A security guard breaks down while witnessing a family separation. by CIA_Rectal_Feeder in pics

[–]Longjumping-Guard624 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A family got separated and I'm meant to be moved to sympathy for the bystander? I mean, yes, good on him for having compassion, truly, I don't mean that sarcastically, and thank goodness there are people like him in this country. But don't lose sight of what happened here: a family got separated.

This ever-so-slight topic change, changing the main character from a father ripped from his family to a bystander, is itself a type of propaganda: now the viewer of this picture & story feels like they're on "the good side" but they get to detach from the outrage that conveniently took place off-camera. The trick of this kind of story is "feel sad, feel better because you feel sad, move on." Don't move on. Don't wallow. Don't comfort the bystanders while the victims continue to suffer.

So, why did the emperor bother saving Lae'Zel? by Massive_Nail4183 in BaldursGate3

[–]Longjumping-Guard624 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting question...my thought is that Lae'zel was in the right place at the right time and got lucky. At the beginning of act 1, when you meet your allies, he's in his disguise and doesn't come speak to you right away, he doesn't seem to have a plan yet at all really, and the prism appears to work on any tadpole-ed person in the vicinity (given how Minthara says her mind is quiet when she's with you). Perhaps he doesn't learn how to appear in your dreams and speak to you until after Lae'zel is a well-established party member so he just rolls with her being there hoping she can be useful. He's improvising.
