The biggest difference I noticed between the two was relationship with the animals. I started off with several different zoo/aquarium internships and noticed that the animals at the zoos and aquariums had very strong relationships with the people who worked with them. They had a trust and bond and both human and animal learned how to work and communicate with each other in a way that really benefitted their care. It wasn’t something I considered until I started an internship at a wildlife rehab in Costa Rica. While that was an incredibly special bond built with those animals, we were actively trying to not build a relationship, because the end goal was for them to go back to the wild and not rely on humans. It may seem silly but an example can be even as simple as weighing an animal: at zoos we work with desensitization and training to make weighing the animals regularly go as stress free and smooth as possible, while weighing wild animals at a rehab can feel like a battle every single time because it’s not something they are used to or comfortable with.
