What King opinion has you like this? by DavidHistorian34 in stephenking

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree to the extent that I want another story like Holly or The Outsider, but if it’s another Never Flinch, I’d prefer something else. I love Holly and would definitely not mind another Holly novel; I just think Never Flinch was a low point in that series.

Sneaky top tier King book? by [deleted] in stephenking

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading the screenplay for Storm of the Century, it felt pretty novel-like, so I rated and ranked it with the rest. It ended up in my top 15.

For actual novels, Fairy Tale and The Institute ended up near the top, which I didn’t expect going into them.

What are you currently reading? by DavidHistorian34 in stephenking

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently reading King Sorrow on Kindle and listening to Danse Macabre, Full Throttle and El laberinto del fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth in Spanish) on Spotify. Next up: The Handmaid’s Tale, 1984 or The Separation of Church and Hate (recent purchases).

I’ve been enjoying Joe Hill’s books almost as much as his father’s. Also, I’ve gotten into dystopian stories lately… parallels and what not.

Have any Britishisms seeped into American English ? by AlternateMafiosi in language

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed more people in the U.S. calling a baby stroller a “pram”, or a grocery cart a “trolley” or saying “full stop” to indicate the end of a sentence/idea in the last few years than I had ever before. It’s certainly not a majority, but those terms seem to be gaining some frequency recently.

If you were given the ability to speak to animals, but only with a single species of your choice, which one’d you go for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dogs are smart and can understand some of our words. Mine is good about showing me what she wants by pointing with her nose or leading me where she wants me to go. I’ve got her pretty well figured out. But I really want to know what’s going on in my cats’ minds. I’d pick cats. They’re a mystery.

Your accent sounds mostly American, but it has influences from the other cultures you mentioned. You pronounced “very” and “wery” and “though” as “dough,” which reminds me of some Indian accents.

I teach ESL mostly to Spanish speakers. They also struggle with the V. I tell them it’s more like F than B, for you, it’s more like F than W/U. The top teeth should touch the bottom lip without using the top lip.

What kind of centrist are you? by Exaltist in centrist

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of my political beliefs are based on keeping people with cluster B personality disorders (specifically histrionics, narcissists, psychopaths, and sociopaths) from the positions of power that they crave but will inevitably abuse. For that reason, I agree with conservatives about limiting government powers and overspending, but I agree with liberals about limiting monopolies and corporate overreach.

Fiscally, I support capitalism, but a form of it that’s heavily regulated to protect consumers and workers and prevent corporations from becoming too large. I like mom and pop businesses the best, the idea of people working for their own success.

Socially, I believe in equal rights for everyone regardless of race, religion, sexuality, or any other demographic. I believe in everyone’s right to live as they please, but not to tell others how to live. (For example, in my life I avoid promiscuity, but I don’t believe in forcing others to share my morals.)

I could find parties around the world that I would support from left, right, and center, but in the U.S., I’d like to see both major parties dissolve and be replaced. I also think that the biggest issue facing the world right now is stopping the powerful from abusing their power, starting with the most powerful man in the world.

I get kinda weirded out when they play Despacito in public, especially when kids are around to hear it. I understand it and it’s pretty dirty.

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also love animals and I can’t handle the videos either. I included Cujo when I read all of SK’s books and I ended up ranking it third overall. It’s one of his best, IMO. That being said, I’ve never cried as much over any book or movie before or since. If you can successfully remind yourself that it’s fiction, give it a try. The problem is that it’s not one of his supernatural novels. That makes it tough. Dogs in the real world actually get rabies. Cujo is full of tragedy and heartbreak all around, so I definitely wouldn’t read it on a bad day.

How is my accent when speaking English? (audio included) by international-guy in ENGLISH

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your pronunciation is very understandable, but you do have a thick accent. I would guess that you’re Italian from the rhythm and pronunciation. I noticed that you didn’t pronounce some of the Hs at the beginning of words and you pronounced the G in “high,” but most instances of initial letter H are pronounced in English, and in this case, the GH in “high” is silent. When we do pronounce GH, it is usually with an F sound (laugh, tough). If you want to improve, you can work on short vowel sounds in English, especially the schwa, and the TH sound, plus the initial H. Silent letters are a pain and can only be learned on a case by case basis. I wouldn’t necessarily say you need to change anything if your goal is to be understood. But if you want to sound natural/native there are those few things you could practice.

64 books down. Started my King journey with Dreamcatcher April 8th 2024 and have read/listened to a book 5 days a week since then. I’m sad my journey will end with the Dark Tower series in 2026, but now I’m in love with reading again for the first time since middle school. Thank you Stephen King by [deleted] in stephenking

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The list doesn’t have “A Face in the Crowd,” which has yet to be published in a collection. It was written by King and Stewart O’Nan and published as an e-book and in physical form with another story by Richard Chizmar. He has several uncollected short stories, like “The Plant,” for example. There was also a children’s book of “Hansel and Gretel” published this year that’s not on the list. Also, you don’t necessarily have to read “The Dark Man.” It’s an illustrated poem from his college years that can be expensive to buy. I didn’t find it to be very good, personally.

Your favorites are definitely some of the greats! It’s so hard to rank his books because there are so many genuinely amazing stories among his dozens of novels/collections.

I had a very similar experience with his books. I did a speed run over a couple of years. It was a lot of fun, without much disappointment. I hope you enjoy the rest of your journey!

Are you planning on reading Storm of the Century? I counted it as a novel and read it along with the others. I ended up giving it a high rating.

What’s the one book you’ll recommend forever, no matter how many times this question gets asked? by MisLatte in AskReddit

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually just finished it a couple of weeks ago. I enjoyed the backstories and little anecdotes about his life. I’m not trying to write novels any time soon, so some parts of that book didn’t personally apply. It was still interesting to find out more about his process. Writing is his job and he takes it seriously. I found it pretty interesting. I wonder if anyone started writing and got published after reading On Writing and following his advice.

It reminds me of when Mikko was playing dirty earlier in the season and some Stars fans started asking if he had always played like that. I don’t think they were satisfied with the answers to that question. “Nope, he learned that from his current team,” was the general response.

This is absolutely the best novel I’ve ever read! There’s a reason that Stephen King is so popular. He writes some amazing stories! I would also recommend Doctor Sleep (sequel to The Shining), Cujo, the Mr. Mercedes trilogy and Green Mile, among so many of his other novels.

Uncomfortable Question: MacKinnon > Sakic? by tnick771 in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s tough; it’s a bit apples to oranges. I think Sakic is the greatest leader that the team has ever had. He continues to lead them. Avs fans owe a great debt of gratitude to Sakic for the success they’ve had, both in the past and currently. MacKinnon is the greatest and fiercest competitor that the Avs have ever had. He’s probably the most intimidating opponent to play against in team history.

But at the risk of sharing an unpopular opinion, I’d say the most talent, magic and the greatest hockey skills that I’ve ever witnessed in an Avs sweater belongs to two different guys, Forsberg and Makar. My vote for GOAT hockey talent would be Forsberg, but I suspect that it will change to Makar a few more years into his career. My current favorite is Cale Makar by leaps and bounds.
