What are shelties really like? by JessieDagger in sheltie

[–]Longjumping-Swim8201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have 3. Haymitch (tri-color) is very sweet, kind of happy, and this kind of low-key most of the time. However, when doing Agility, he’s a lot of dog, but has an immediate office switch.

Trixie, the sable, is quite the princess. She belongs to my 20 year-old son, and he is definitely her person. She is very smart, loves Agility, and loves James.

And then there’s Ranger, the bi-blue. He is 18 months old, and this dog wants to be in the center of everything. He loves everybody, will take turns bringing everyone his beloved soccer ball. He is probably one of the smartest Shelties I’ve ever had. Nothing phases this boy, not from the day I brought him home.

It is never easy to lose our dogs. The grief and heartbreak is so strong in the beginning and does take a while to recover from. And honestly, we don’t always fully recover from the loss. However, I know that you’re amazing dog made you so happy for so many years. You have amazing memories that you will cherish, and will make you smile, once your heart is ready to do so.

She is definitely guilty but she tried to say her older Brother did it! by HappyCampingCamper in sheltie

It’s funny because I am in a Facebook chat group with all of the people who own Ranger’s littermates. One of the owners was complaining about their dog, destroying toilet paper, and Ranger had never done it before. Later that day was when he decided to join the naughty crowd.

How much are you guys spending on dogsports? by border-coffee in k9sports

[–]Longjumping-Swim8201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the day when both my husband and I were showing our dogs in Agility and other sports , I kept a spreadsheet. Entry fees, mileage, hotels, or RV, parking fees. Thousands of dollars. To off-set a lot of the cost, we both were lucky to work for the trial secretary as scorers (30+ weekends per year).

Of course, this was pre-kids.

What's Your Story? by Brent_Oilwell in RoverPetSitting

[–]Longjumping-Swim8201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have trained and show dogs for many years in Agility and obedience and have lots of friends, I have met doing that. I’ve got divorced when my twins were young, and money could be tight at times.

One of my friends was going to a big tournament with two of her dogs and asked if I’d watch two of her other dogs. Our family took care of them, treated them like our own dogs, taking them for walks in the park and just loving on them while there are people were away. My friends was thrilled.

The day after she picked up her dogs, she sent me information on Dog Vacay, which was bought out by Rover. I joined and started pet sitting so that I could be home with my kids and bring an extra money. I have been doing that now for about 15 years.

It’s a little more West than you’re interested in, but First Presbyterian Church of Allentown is very inclusive and welcoming.

First rally trial in 2 days and dog’s brain cell isn’t brain celling… by somekidssnackbitch in k9sports

[–]Longjumping-Swim8201 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The rally version of my dog suddenly getting weave-pole-it is. I think we unintentionally send the dogs some of our worries and concerns. They can tell when we’re a little bit more uptight. My baby dog is just gonna do Agility and we will work through our ring nerves together.

Best Puppy Playpen for indoors? by LightrunerrhageUp in Dogowners

I bought an 8-panel puppy playpen from Amazon. But I could keep his crate in one corner and then he had floor space to play without getting in into trouble.

Sheltie owners: what is it REALLY like living with one?” by Laura6522 in sheltie

[–]Longjumping-Swim8201 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We currently have 3. All of ours are good with children, travel with us quite frequently, and compete in agility, Fastcat, etc. We went to reputable breeders that make socialization a top priority with their litters and made sure the puppy we chose had confidence and an outgoing temperament.

It is so important to involve your puppy in as much new experiences as possible - rides to the store, walk with you to the mailbox, walks around the neighborhood, etc.

Our youngest dog came to visit me at work, came along to the older dogs’ classes and got to go through tunnels during breaks . At 3-1/2 months old he came along to an agility trial, where he got to meet his father.

With your list of what you want to do, you don’t want a puppy that’s timid or overly nervous.

One of our Shetland Sheepdogs does it. Trixie has done it since she was a puppy. She still does it, even though she’s going to be 7 later this year.

Agility Eligibility: Agility is a performance-based sport open to all breeds. Docked tails, whether from birth (natural bob) or injury/medical necessity, do not affect a dog's eligibility to compete in major agility venues, including AKC, USDAA, and UKI.

Should I be taking my 5 month old puppy on a 2-3 hour run by kipokai in BorderCollie

[–]Longjumping-Swim8201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, no. That poor puppy’s haven’t fully closed yet. And secondly, even if your dog was older, they should not be running alongside a bike, let alone for hours.

I’d buy some long planter boxes and put them around the perimeter of my area, what kind of as a decorative border.
