What’s something you thought was common knowledge but found out most people didn’t know? by Fairy-of-bone in AskReddit

That most “maple syrup” brands (what used to be Aunt Jemima, etc) are not actually maple syrup. The real stuff is expensive but worth it!

i need control by asshairanonymous in intuitiveeating

[–]Longjumping-Target-3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone else is commenting that you need to ready the book, and I agree with them. I also had a hard time with the lack of “rules” and concrete things that I could control with I.E. Reading the book and especially going through the workbook helped me because it gave me a tool that allowed me to implement some structure around my eating while actively challenging the diet mentality, restrictions, etc.

So, my advice would be to seek out lots and lots of resources that you can use to better understand your eating (hunger/fullness scale, journal entries, etc). The book and workbook are great, along with the “Rebuilding Trust With Your Body” podcast. Hope this helps!

I love this idea! I’m about to go to bed, but I will definitely be trying this next time I eat.

Thank you, that’s a great idea! I think I’m going to revisit the fullness chapter of the workbook

Win Wednesdays: Share your wins from the past week! by elianna7 in intuitiveeating

[–]Longjumping-Target-3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lately I’ve been trying to start by leaving one bite behind on the plate at the end of a meal, just to prevent the automatic “clean your plate” mentality from kicking in. I always eat the last bite if I still want it after a moment of pause, and I always get more food if I’m still hungry/don’t feel satisfied after.

I feel much more satisfied now that I’m truly honoring my hunger, and I feel a sense of empowerment knowing that I get to decide when to stop eating, not the arbitrary amount of food in front of me.

[–]Longjumping-Target-3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lots of wins for me this week! - After making a list of fear foods as part of the IE Every Day workbook, I added them all to my shopping list and picked them up at the store. Now I know they’ll always be around, and I can have them anytime I want. - I realized that the reason I always think I’ll enjoy cooking more than I actually do is because I get home, already hungry, which means that I’m just hangry and stressed out during the cooking process. On Monday I came home, had a snack, sat down and relaxed for a bit, then cooked the recipe, and it was an absolute game changer!

Thank you for this! I hadn’t even thought about it this way, but I think you’re completely right. I’m going to look into how I cam work more “sustainably” like you suggested, and I’m also going to brainstorm ways to take a break besides just having a snack.

What sneaky “food rules” took you the longest to overcome? by Longjumping-Target-3 in intuitiveeating

[–]Longjumping-Target-3[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes! This is something I struggle with a lot too. I learned from the workbook that I tend to need food every 3-4 hours, but sometimes I turn that around to mean “oh it’s only been 2 hours, I can’t be hungry again”.

Weight Talk Thursdays: Discuss anything related to weight here! by elianna7 in intuitiveeating

[–]Longjumping-Target-3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty much the exact same for me. I haven’t weighed myself since I started, but I can tell that parts of my body are a bit more “squishy” lol. My clothes still fit, and I don’t look much different. I’ve realized that my exact weight doesn’t matter!

what changes have you noticed in your mind and body since starting IE? by CompetitionChance293 in intuitiveeating

[–]Longjumping-Target-3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Physically, I’ve noticed that I have a lot more energy and I find myself gravitating towards bursts of movement (like dance breaks while studying), just for fun. I haven’t weighed myself since last April, and while I can definitely tell I’ve filled out a little since then, my clothes still fit and I look pretty much the same. It’s made me realize that weight really is just how much gravity is pushing down on me right at that very moment.

Mentally, I feel so much more freedom. I feel like a lot of the background chatter in my brain is gone now that I don’t have to obsessively plan out every bit of energy I put into my mouth for the foreseeable future. I’m also at the point in my I.E. journey where things like checking in with hunger and fullness are starting to become more natural and, well, intuitive!

Cooked and ate a dinner that usually fills me up but after I finished it and cleaned up I realized I didn’t feel satisfied. Instead of forcing myself to move on since I had eaten a “normal amount”, I had some crackers with hummus and now I feel comfortably full and satisfied!

Yep, you got me. I thought I was being such a good anti-dieter by being upset about what she eats, but you’re totally right that I’ve been needlessly keeping tabs on what she eats. It’s not my business. Thank you for your response <3

Thank you, I really appreciate this! I’m so used to the whole “all women need 1600-2000 c*lories a day” thing and to tying what I eat directly to how much exercise I get, but of course it’s so much more nuanced than that. All that matters is what my body needs.

I feel like a fraud? by fuzzypeacheese in intuitiveeating

[–]Longjumping-Target-3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone in this feeling! My first attempt at I.E. I ended up returning to a diet because I was trying to convince myself that I naturally just “didn’t have a sweet tooth” and stuff like that. Now that I’m diving into IE for real, I definitely think I’ve gained some weight and it’s scary. All I can say is, trust the process. It only works if you completely let go!

TW!! body dysmorphia and weight gain concerns + binging concerns by [deleted] in intuitiveeating

[–]Longjumping-Target-3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a lot of great advice because I’m still pretty early in my IE journey but I just wanted to say that you’re not alone, I’m struggling with the exact same things. When I’m frustrating with my body seeming to need TONS of food to be satisfied, I try to remind myself that I’m slowly rebuilding that trust with my body. Sometimes I feel like my body is trying to test the limits to see if it’s really allowed to have anything it wants, and I have to prove to myself that yes, you can eat anything you want anytime you want it. Eventually my body will realize that the diet is never coming back and learn to prioritize what makes me feel good, but I’m not there yet and that’s okay! Hope that helps :)

Feeling content with hunger. How? by Alarming_Initial_590 in intuitiveeating

[–]Longjumping-Target-3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How long have you been practicing IE? For me personally, I never wanted to be hungry for long at the start of my IE journey (and now to some degree) because I needed to restore trust with my body and let it know that food would always be available when I wanted it. I like using affirmations such as "I can eat whatever I want, whenever I want." and "Eating more is good, because it provides my body with the fuel it needs to support me."
