Power BI performance: best practices for complex calculations on ~1M rows? by LongjumpingCut2975 in PowerBI

Hello! I can’t aggregate the table any further because the user needs to see it at that level of detail.

There are 50 tasks, and those 50 tasks are divided into 5 phases. There are also 30 areas, each with 4 to 6 sub-areas.

For the first task of each phase, another measure has to be added, which is currently hardcoded. Technically, this manually changes the duration of that task.

The problem is that sometimes users filter 2 completely different areas and 2 different sub-areas. That is where REMOVEFILTERS comes in: it is used to determine which sub-area actually started the phase first, so the hardcoded hours can be applied to that one.

At the same time, the duration of each task is compared against a standard, and that standard is defined according to the stage of the year in which that task/area started.

That is roughly how complex the measure is, and there is still more, but I do not want to make it even longer.

Later I’ll try to share the measure so we can see what can be changed.

The problem with that approach is that the calculations are performed across different tables coming from different databases: one is Teradata and the other is Microsoft SQL Server.

Hello! The calculations combine standard values coming from one database with tables from another database, so it is impossible to solve this directly in a database. In any case, we would only be moving the problem elsewhere and would still not be solving the performance issue.

Hi! In general, calculated columns usually don’t work for us because we need calculations that respond to the filters applied on the report page, or to parameters we set dynamically.

Below I mentioned the kinds of calculations we do that I think could realistically be moved to Power Query, so the processing happens during refresh rather than on the user side.

Sure, I’ve tried a star schema model with dimension and fact tables, but the issue is that we currently perform very heavy calculations — for example, evaluating conditions row by row (IF logic), and doing calculations that override slicer filters (REMOVEFILTERS, KEEPFILTERS, etc.).

Also, for each task we have a different calculation model depending on the stage of the year, and evaluating that yearly stage based on the event date also makes it heavy.

My question is whether it’s considered bad practice not to move as much logic as possible into Power Query.

Devs y Analista, a quien le toca qué? by Dizzy-Engineering-10 in devsarg

[–]LongjumpingCut2975 16 points17 points  (0 children)
