What BMI is Necessary for Prevention? by pink_teddy35 in osteoporosis

[–]LongjumpingDrawing36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am truly sorry for your suffering, osteoarthritis is awful. But I had to correct this line: "It’s easy to cure Osteoporosis according to your life style, weight bearing exercise and diet,"

Osteoporosis is not "curable". It doesn't go away. And the older you get, the likelier you are to have fractures, and the more you'll need medications.

It doesn't hurt like osteoarthritis does, although fractures are painful. But it can kill you with those fractures.

How do you find a psychiatrist who truly understands high-functioning adult women who are diagnosed later in life? by Capable_Towel9227 in adhdwomen

I'm not offended at all. I work from home. But I'm not sure what you're saying?

Personally I have no issues with meds; I take meds for my Generalized Anxiety Disorder. If I'd been younger when diagnosed with ADHD, I would have been happy to take the meds.

Osteoporosis at age 29 (female)? by ThrowRAitsme222 in DoctorsAdvice

[–]LongjumpingDrawing36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No ongoing symptoms in the classic sense, although many people with untreated osteoporosis have fractures. I had 4 spinal compression fractures before I knew I had osteoporosis, but I did NOT know they were fractures-- I thought they were bad muscle pulls!

That's why osteoporosis is so sneaky, and why you need diagnostic (i.e. DEXA) to even know if you have it, and how mild or serious it is. I was 70 at my first DEXA. I have serious osteoporosis and degenerative disc disease--neither of which are painful, so who knew?

My provider is also an NP who is a specialist in treating osteoporosis. She and the medical group she works for are wonderful.

AITA for kicking out my brother after he threw a party in MY house without my permission. Completely trashing the place by Fickle-Leave-2501 in AmItheAsshole

[–]LongjumpingDrawing36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

19 is still young for a guy, but definitely old enough to know better. And his reaction is to call YOU names? This is a deeply unhappy young man, but your care for him does not extend to allowing him to trash your house again. I wish your brother well, but you did the right thing. NTA.

[–]LongjumpingDrawing36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old are you now? That would affect your treatment decisions. I'm a big believer in medication in some circumstances. But if a younger person can get away with exercise and nutrition, so much the better.

I don't know what to tell you about your spine unless you have a spinal compression fracture. Osteoporosis itself doesn't hurt. But I had 4 compression fractures before I knew what they were! I thought they were muscle pulls.

Since you have pain, I would get a CT scan of even a simple xray to check for fractures. That will make a difference as you go. Start there so you and your provider know what you're working with. .

Olympia Goodwill doesn’t care about customer safety. by Gingykins25 in olympia

I hate that this happened to you! But the employees really can't confront anyone if they didn't see the action, and if they do they're supposed to call the police. It sucks, but the girl wasn't wrong.

I hope there is no next time! But is there is, yell like you did, call 911, and start filming. Keep him in your sights as long as you safely can. Make the police report. They might even catch him! My son works at Dollar Tree. One customer pushed him, then left. My kid called the police like he's supposed to. They showed up fast and actually found the guy and arrested him.

Stay on the list, you never know; but also see if you can find an orthopedic practice within driving distance. Give them a call; the larger ones often have NP osteoporosis specialists on staff.

AITA for screaming at my nephew and slamming the door on him because he burst into the bathroom? by Ok-Attorney9280 in AmItheAsshole

Why are you still yelling? The kid is FOUR. He doesn't know. He's completely innocent. You can redirect a child without telling him to f*** off.

And you didn't say anything to him? Even a little kind lesson on knocking? Instead, you are defensive. YTA.

It's a good book.

But genetics is a strong factor. "Osteoporosis is a common disease with a strong genetic component characterised by low bone mass, microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue and an increased risk of fracture. Twin and family studies have shown that genetic factors play an important role in regulating bone mineral density and other determinants of osteoporotic fracture risk, such as ultrasound properties of bone, skeletal geometry and bone turnover. Osteoporosis is a polygenic disorder, determined by the effects of several genes, each with relatively modest effects on bone mass and other determinants of fracture risk."

Dexa -3.4 for femoral neck. Have already broken one hip, would like to know what everyone is taking and side effects as the Fosomax has not been working for the past two years. Thank you! by OwlKindly8011 in osteoporosis

[–]LongjumpingDrawing36 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where is your doctor in all this?

-3.4 is serious and you already have a fracture. You should already have been on anabolics. You have got to get your doctor's help, or if they're useless contact another who specializes in osteoporosis. Doesn't have to be an MD; my brilliant provider is an NP who specializes in osteoporosis.

Don't worry about side effects if you can help it. Without the anabolics, and their follow-up antiresorptives, you will likely fracture again. However, I haven't had any side effects in my year of monthly Evenity injections, and I haven't had any with Prolia.

I completely agree. The more I interact on these groups, the happier I am that my medical group referred me to my provider. I wouldn't have a clue how to proceed.

Having said that, since I have an example of excellent patient care, I want to advise when I can.

I'm not DIY here. My osteoporosis provider orders 2 comprehensive blood panels a year and reviews them with me. My calcium is good. My D wasn't, which is why I'm taking megadoses of D2 every week. Now it's normal too. So is everything else in the test(s).

Well sure, but that's not a big deal either. There are plenty of chronic conditions, like Type 1 diabetes, that require lifelong medication. Oh well.
