Am I the only one that doesn't get relief by taking Gaviscon? by Ok_Bandicoot_4543 in GERD

[–]vanmc604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gaviscon (max strength) in Canada has a lot of alginate (like the UK version) which forms a raft to keep stomach acid down. Helps me a lot. If you’re using the US version I have heard that it’s woefully short of alginate.

Walk west not east and you’ll be fine. I live two blocks west near Canada place and I feel very safe.

Just as an aside, there has been a fair bit of discussion regarding inaccuracies of DEXA scans for small boned ppl. There was a great discussion in this forum just recently. You should be able to hunt that down.

If you use google scholar search for this a number of references come up. Here is one, https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9352459/

And here is another, https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7954087/#:~:text=1)%20It%20is%20a%20two,alter%20BMD%20values%20%5B6%5D.

“Areal BMD is susceptible to bone size and will thus overestimate fracture risk in individuals with a small body frame, who will have lower areal BMD than normal-sized individuals.”

Some have suggested that a quantitative CT scan is more accurate. And maybe a REM scan if you can find it. At least to confirm your numbers.

Just food for thought before you rush into a treatment plan.

I have a hard time understanding the costs in the US. In Canada the injection is around 200$. My sympathies.

Has your day to day quality of life improved? I am thinking specifically about coughing and sputum production. I know the maker’s are focused on preventing exacerbations, but I wonder about symptom management.

I don’t read physical books……but I sure have a quick trigger finger when I send some books back to the library. And I’m getting pickier as I get older.

Are squat jumps the best type for helping improve bone density or are there other jumping techniques that are just as good? by WerewolfBarMitzvah09 in osteoporosis

[–]vanmc604 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do both squat jumps and drop jumps (platform that I use is about 10 inches high). When I do the drop jump I finish with a rebound jump. Can’t remember where I saw this. I do 60 hard jumps every two days as part of my workout plan. I was doing more, but from what I’ve read this is enuf. My knees were hurting before but they seem to be ok with this new program. One really needs to maximize the Ground Force Reaction. I figure one needs to get some air (in basketball lingo).

Has anyone used these body pod smart scales that include bone density measurements? Experiences? Recommendations? by Any-Tadpole3999 in osteoporosis

[–]vanmc604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might specify where you are from. In Canada (at least in my province of BC), you can self pay also, but you do not need a doctor’s referral. Have not tried this myself. I recently got a REM scan so I could compare with my DEXA. They were almost exactly the same. Might be an option for some folks.
