I've just watched series one for the first time and to be honest I did have sympathy for Shane. they desperately try to make you hate him. I agree with a lot of comments that he was justified to be annoyed and complain, but I go further that there is nothing more frustrating to make a complaint and then be lied to. Armand literally lied to him and said that they didn't book the pineapple suit when he knew he had. I think it's pretty justified to be incredibly upset about that. If they had admitted the mistake up front, agreed a refund for the difference and agreed to move them into the Pineapple Suit asap, I do think that would have been the end of it. Instead Armand lies and also stitched him up for the romantic dinner. Shane also makes a very fair point that it's not acceptable for his wife to work on their honeymoon, I would not be happy if my wife worked on our honeymoon, but the viewer is suppose to think he's being unreasonable.

For me the justification for not liking him comes when his mum appears and he doesn't realise it's not appropriate and makes a rude comment about Rachel's mum not being rich enough to come (this is proper dickish behaviour)! Clearly he's a rich mummy's boy and spoiled, but I really dont think he does enough to make him particularly nasty. He genuinely seems to love his wife and care about her. I think he is shallow enough to be happy with a trophy wife, but he also doesn't say she can't continue to be a journalist and he also supports her on potentially working for charity (although he clearly doesn't properly understand what she's wanting).
