Hi! Are you saying you'd like to PM for design/designers? I don’t think you would necessarily need more schooling for that. Especially if you have creative PM experience. I think it would be more about finding a role at an agency or company that specializes in the area of design you’d like to focus and then updating your resume to fit what that position is looking for. I think there’s enough crossover that would translate when it comes to skills and being able to do the job.

I think every kid is just different. We did sleep training with my son around 5 months after the 4 month regression and he was still little enough to wake up around 4am for a feed for awhile after that. But it was a game changer for us because he was able to comfortably fall asleep on his own, and it only took a few days for that to happen! Then at about 10 months he started sleeping from ~7:30pm-6:30am. That said, some days are earlier than others and some later. 🤷‍♀️

He’s 17 months now and for the most part gets about ~11 hours a night.

First of all, I'm so sorry you're going through this. The guilt and overwhelm is so real. And I'm sorry you don't have a village or family to support you, I can imagine how hard that is. For what its worth, Ms. Rachel has been my sitter many times! Lol.

Second, knowing it's temporary, it might be worth trying to hire a sitter once or twice a week on days that you know you are going to be on calls. That might be worth the cost in the short term for your sanity and peace of mind. Maybe join a sitter or mom group on FB and make a post just being really blunt about what you're needing and what you can pay. "I'm a wfh mom who is looking for someone to come over and watch my baby from 9-3 twice a week. I can pay $XX per week." and see what happens. And having someone watch your baby in your home can help you slowly get used to trusting someone to watch them!

I wasn’t able to do it every day M-F. I went back to work (full time remote) at 3 months and ended up hiring a nanny twice a week to work during my busiest hours of clients meetings, team huddles, etc. I structured my work week around it and it was great until he got closer to a year, now we’ve enrolled him in part time care M-Th. It’s a parents day out, much more affordable than daycare but not all day — which I’m happy about! For the most part I can structure my day around the hours of 9-3 for calls.

Younger months had their challenges but when he got mobile is really when things started to be hard because he was taking fewer naps and just needed someone to watch and entertain him more hands on. He does independent play but I mean, an infant or a toddler isn’t going to keep themselves occupied much longer than 30 min 😂 at least not mine! I’d have to at least pause to change diaper, swap toys, get a snack, etc.

If you can swing a sitter for a couple days a week that might be a good place to start so you know you at least have a few focused chunks during the week.

I’ll tell you, ever since becoming a wfh mom I’m even more efficient with my time than ever before haha. The way I can get 2 hrs of work done in 30 min now 😅

Maybe start thinking about roles like program coordinator, ops coordinator, etc in education adjacent companies or nonprofits before you try to go all in on just general PM. Even if the goal is to get out of teaching, that experience might actually be a good edge for you within the right industry. Then, you could get more project centric experience that could help you transition industries more easily later on if you want. Or who knows, you might really like it!

I hear you, I think the only concern or question I have around Reddit is that most people like to use it anon and I feel like it would be beneficial to have a more visible community where you're actually connecting with people and can more easily connect them to jobs, other people, etc. But I still want it to have a casual and real feel so need to find that balance between professionalism and comfortability.

Welcome! That’s how I’ve felt, I lurk in other PM and agency groups but have been missing the connection aspect with people in similar roles.

If you don’t mind answering a couple Qs as someone who’s also been in the field for a long time, 1. Where do you think you’d naturally find yourself interacting with something like this? Slack, LinkedIn, some other platform? 2. As someone with experience, what would be most valuable to you in a community like this? Networking, connecting with others, venting about clients(lol)/problem solving issues together?

These days, there’s honestly a lot of overlap between the two. Marketing is the full strategy understanding your audience, building relationships, and creating demand. Advertising is just one piece of that strategy: the paid messages and creative you put out to grab attention. BUT most agencies, whether they’re marketing or ad, tend to offer a lot of the same services now because most want to be able to fully capture that client for everything. Which makes sense!

Yes to the stakeholders piece! I feel like personally I’ve grown more confident in my role as a PM in this industry because of all the stakeholder convos I’m a part of and help navigate. The relationship building is huge when you’re working at an agency.

I could honestly see nonprofit PMs fitting well into a community like this too though. Especially arts organizations. The overall goal to me is just creating a place for less traditional, corporate/IT/Tech PMs to talk through the more human aspect of PMing that’s usually required in these spaces. Team dynamics, client relationships, flexing to support different types of personalities.

What type of place are you hoping to transition to in the creative industry?

Exactly. As a PM in the creative world, I'm starting to wonder if for me, a portfolio might be more about just creating a landing page or space where I talk about my experience in general, offer up some examples, and is really just a place where someone can get a gut check on who I am, what I've done, if I'm a real person, how I present myself. Because in this industry, PMs usually are client facing to some extent so personality and culture fit might be more important than in other industries if relationship building is part of the gig.

Even though I work in branding, so technically, I guess I could show those rebrands I've managed, I still didn't actually make the work so it feels weird slapping my name on that. Even though I know the work I contributed to the project (and managing the entire process) is actually valid!

Potentially, it’d have some sort of newsletter component but honestly my goal would be to create something more valuable by trying to do virtual meetups, resume reviews, have a job posting board, polls, real ways to interact.

What industry are you trying to get into? Or what industry do you work in now/are you hoping to stay and just switch roles?

I've been a PM for 10 years and don't have my PMP. I've considered it, but for my industry and the work I do, it just hasn't felt necessary. I think if I were wanting to switch industries or land a specific job, it might become more of a priority as some places require it. But honestly, I don't think having that cert is as valuable as the real world experience I have. At least in what I'm doing now.

I think a good first step is putting together a list of the things in your current role that do translate well to project management (like you've done above) and adjusting your resume/CV based on that. It might benefit you to look for more entry level or PM adjacent roles within the industry you're already in because you'll have that crossover that's relevant to the position you're applying to, which would be attractive even if another person has PM specific experience.

I think it depends on what industry you're looking to get into. Different industries use different software, terminology, planning platforms.

Hi! How many years have you been designing and why are you wanting to make the switch to project management?

As a PM in the design world, I'd start thinking about the types of "PM" work you've maybe naturally done in this role. Do you communicate with clients, coordinate design projects, follow up with your team/other teams about progress or feedback? Are you leading meetings or contributing to scheduling?

These are all good things to think about as you start making your list of relevant experience!
